Jimbatron
Introduction and Table of Contents This guide will show you how to get 100% on Red Dead Redemption, with all the achievements/trophies for the re-released versions (PC, PS5 and Switch, and single player items for older versions). It will also includes all the optional side quests and outfits, in effect, covering all the non-random content in the game. It does this by providing a specific route and order to each task required, so you can do it in an efficient and easy play through. This will combine tasks where it is easier to achieve them together. For example, in one mission, “At home with Dutch, it is possible to get the “Manifest Destiny” achievement trophy, part complete of a challenge, and get an outfit scrap, all much easier than it is to do those tasks in free roam. It also orders your tasks to minimise unnecessary travel back and forth. I find this is a much better way to go about 100% than having separate guides for each task. If for example, you complete the story mode missions, and then embark on the challenges, you’ll have to revisit places you’ve already been to, wasting time when tasks could have been done earlier, and missing opportunities missions give you to complete them with ease. It should be noted, that this isn’t a pure speed running guide. Speed running requires you rush, and do things like skipping cutscenes. This guide aims to maximise your immersion, and won’t rely on tricks that feel too out of place with the story, but it won’t have you waste time unnecessarily either. The guide is all about getting everything done without having to pull off anything too difficult, avoiding the most painful grinds and at a good pace that you will hopefully find enjoyable. There’s a full ordered route below, split into chapters and sections, so you can follow easily and keep track of your progress. The guide is arranged into the following sections, please click on the links below to jump to each part: A) Overall Requirements and Strategy B) Chapter 1 C) Chapter 2 D) Chapter 3 E) Epilogue F) Summary and Acknowledgements Error spotting is welcome. This guide is large so it will be unlikely if a few small mistakes haven't crept in. Constructive comments that help fix issues will be added to the acknowledgements section. Please note that whilst I'm happy to hear and discuss alternative routes, I will probably not be able to make changes to the guide tables. This takes a long time, and if you make a change in one place it tends to have knock on consequences, some of which aren't always immediately obvious. Jimbatron
Overall Strategy Requirements for 100% The following items are needed for 100%. If you follow the guide's schedule in the sections below you will get 100%, so it isn’t essential to read this in full, but it will help you understand the rationale for the route taken and minimise the chance of you missing anything, as you will recognise the importance of (some seemingly inconsequential tasks) as you go. The guide colour codes the requirements into categories – Missions; Strangers; Challenges & Locations; Bounties & Hideouts; Outfits, Jobs & Games; and Safe Houses & Weapons. The grouping is fairly arbitrary but just chosen so the type of task stands out a bit more. Missions All 57 Story Missions must be completed. The final one is “The Last Enemy That Shall Be Destroyed” Strangers 18 out of the 19 Stranger side quests must be completed for 100%. The one that isn’t required is “I Know You”. It is also miss-able, as it cannot be completed after “The Last Enemy That Shall Be Destroyed”. However, it is one of the most iconic encounters in any Rockstar Game, so I would highly recommend doing it if you are unfamiliar with this part of the narrative. Challenges & Locations The following four Challenge categories must be completed in full. Survivalist Challenges: Spoiler Survivalist 1 – Pick 6 Wild Feverfew (found in Hennigan’s Stead) Survivalist 2 – Pick 6 Desert Sage (found in Gaptooth Ridge) Survivalist 3 – Pick 4 Red Sage (found in Rio Brava) Survivalist 4 – Pick 8 Prickly Pear (found in Punta Orgullo) Survivalist 5 – Pick 9 Wooly Blue Curls (found in Perdido) Survivalist 6 – Pick 8 Butterfly Weed (found in Diez Coronas) Survivalist 7 – Pick 10 Hummingbird Sage (found in the south of Tall Trees) Survivalist 8 - Pick 12 Pairie Poppies (found in Great Plains) Survivalist 9 - Pick 15 Golden Currant (found around Beecher’s Hope) Survivalist 10 - Pick 10 Violet Snowdrops (found in the North of Tall Trees) and 2 of all the other plants Clearly for the above it makes sense to do them when you are in the right locations. A survivalist map is also very handy. Sharpshooter Challenges: Spoiler Sharpshooter 1 - Kill 5 Flying Birds (can be completed during “Exodus in America” and “New Friends, Old Problems”) Sharpshooter 2 – Kill 5 Rabbits (can be completed during “New Friends, Old Problems”) Sharpshooter 3 – Kill 5 Coyotes without taking damage from them (can be completed during “New Friends, Old Problems”) Sharpshooter 4 – Kill 5 Birds from a moving train (can be completed during “Civilisation, at any Price”) Sharpshooter 5 – Kill 2 Types of Wild Animal in one Dead Eye Meter Sharpshooter 6 – Shoot 2 Hats of peoples heads (can be complete during “The Demon Drink”) Sharpshooter 7 – Kill 3 Bears each with one shot (can be partially completed during “At Home with Dutch) Sharpshooter 8 – Shoot the hats of two people’s heads and disarm two people (can be easily completed at the Hideout Twin Rocks) Sharpshooter 9 – Kill 6 Wild Animals without Reloading or Changing Weapons (can easily be done at Twin Rocks on the vultures the circle overhead immediately after unlocking Rank Sharpshooter 10 – Disarm 6 People with one ammo clip (use the Evans Repeater at the Hideout Fort Mercer) As you can see, a lot of Sharpshooter ranks can be earned during missions. As some require specific animals, this is very helpful as it means you don’t have to rely on RNG spawns in free roam. Master Hunter Challenges: Spoiler Master Hunter 1 – Kill and Skin 5 Coyote (can be completed during “New Friends, Old Problems”) Master Hunter 2 – Kill and Skin 5 Deer (there are always a lot around outside the ranch after “New Friends, Old Problems”) Master Hunter 3 – Kill 5 Wolves with your Knife Master Hunter 4 - Skin Fiver Boars and Three Armadillos Master Hunter 5 – Kill 2 Cougars with your Knife and skin them (shoot them with the carbine rifle to wound them, then one knife swipe should finish them. It’s the one time where this inferior repeater should be your weapon of choice late on – the Henry Repeater risks killing them) Master Hunter 6 – Skin 5 Raccoons, 5 Skunks and 5 Foxes (the Racoons and Foxes are plentiful in Tall Trees. You should also look for Bears towards Shapshooter 7 and the “Bearly Legal” achievement/trophy at the same time in this area). Master Hunter 7 – Skin 5 elk and 5 bighorn sheep (both are plentiful in Tall Trees. You should also look for Bears towards Shapshooter 7 and the “Bearly Legal” achievement/trophy at the same time in this area). Master Hunter 8 – Kill a bear with your knife (This can be completed during “For Purely Scientific Purposes”, a bear you encounter en route will not fight back. If you miss the opportunity, shoot a bear once between the eyes with the Henry Repeater. This won’t kill it, but should weaken it to the point where one knife slash will finish it). Master Hunter 9 – Kill Kahn, the legendary Jaguar. Master Hunter 10 – Kill the legendary animals Gordo, Lobo and Brumas (note Brumas the Bear is found at the same location as Treasure Hunter Challenge 10) Again, you can see that missions can really help out with some of these. But also whilst hunting some animals, particularly in the Tall Trees area, you should keep your eye out for other targets at the same time. Treasure Hunter Challenges: Spoiler Treasure Hunter 1 – Find a treasure map. (This is done via a random event which seems to have a very high spawn probability east of Pleasance House after you finish “Political Realities in Armadilo”) Treasure Hunter 2 – Find a Gold Bar. (This is close to all 3 parts of “American Appetites”) Treasure Hunter 3 – Find a Gold Bar. (This is close by after you finish “A Welshman, a Frenchman and an Irishman”) Treasure Hunter 4 – Find a Gold Bar. (You finish right on top of this after “Let the Dead Bury Their Dead” It’s highly preferable to have done rank 3 before this mission so you can collect the treasure there and then, otherwise you’ll have to fight your way through the Tumbleweed Hideout again to get it) Treasure Hunter 5 – Find a Gold Bar. (On the way to “Civilisation, at Any Price” when you first Arrive in Mexcio) Treasure Hunter 6 – Find a Gold Bar. (On the way to “Civilisation, at Any Price” when you first Arrive in Mexcio) Treasure Hunter 7 – Find a Gold Bar. (Close to Chuparosa where multiple missions start) Treasure Hunter 8 – Find a Gold Bar. (Close to where “Deadlus and Son” starts) Treasure Hunter 9 – Find a Gold Bar. (Close to where you get plants for Survivalist 8 and 9) Treasure Hunter 10 – Find a Gold Bar. (Where you also find Brumas the Legendary Bear for Master Hunter 10). Again, for Treasure Hunter, you see that there are other missions and challenges that take you exactly where you need to go to pick these up. So it’s better to get them then, than make separate trips. In fact, in my first playthrough over a decade ago on the PS3, it was Treasure Hunter 4 that made me think “hey, if only I had that map when I’d done that mission with Seth here, I could have got it then!”. That led to me first planning a route in a Rockstar game for 100%). Map Locations: You must also have knowledge of all 94 map locations. This can be done by visiting them in person, or by buying maps of the counties in stores. The following maps are available to purchase: Spoiler Gaptooth Ridge Map – Purchase at Armadillo General Store Cholla Springs Map – Purchase at Armadillo General Store Hennigan’s Stead Map – Purchase at MacFarlane’s Ranch General Store Rio Bravo Map – Purchase at Thieves’ Landing General Store Punta Orgullo Map – Purchase at Escalera Gunsmith Perdido Map – Purchase at Chuparosa General Store Diez Coronas Map – Purchase at Chuparosa General Store Tall Trees Map – Purchase at Manzinita Post General Store Great Plains Map – Purchase at Blackwater General Store Note that in my playthrough, the Rio Bravo and Punta Orgullo Maps were unavailable to buy, I believe because I’d already visited all locations in those counties. But simply buying all the maps available and using them will tick off this requirement. Bounties & Hideouts Bounties: For Bounties, you must complete one for each other following locations: Spoiler New Austin: Rattlesnake Hollow Rio Del Lobo Mercer Station Repentance Rock Silent Stead The Hanging Rock Brittlebrush Trawl Mescalero Neuvo Paraiso: Plata Grande Ojo Del Diablo Hendidura Grande Primera Quebrada Sepulcro Laguna Borrego Rancho Polvo Barranca West Elizabeth: Aurora Basin Tanner's Reach Bearclaw Camp Nekoti Rock Note the location order you draw is random, but you will get a new one until you have done them all. Therefore, if you do 8 in New Austin, 8 in Nuevo Paraiso and 4 in West Elizabeth, you’ll meet the requirement. Also however, you need to pay attention to the target. You must capture someone from the Bollard Twins Gang, the Treasure Hunter Gang, and the Banditos alive to unlock required outfit scraps. If you kill them all, you’ll have to do more Bounties until you capture one alive, so that’s obviously undesirable. Also, other targets brought back alive will unlock options outfit scraps, and it pays more. So it’s generally best to capture all bounties alive in my opinion. Bounty posters appear early morning and late afternoon of major settlements – just hang around at these times until you see the skull icon appear on the radar. But again, given the limited time spawn of posters, it’s really a good idea to mix bounties in between other activities, as this guide does. If you do them all at the end, it will be a real pain repeatedly advancing time to get loads of them to spawn one after another. Hideouts: The following Hideouts must also be cleared: Spoiler Nosalida Tesora Azul Gaptooth Breach Fort Mercer Twin Rocks Pikes Basin The formerly PS3 exclusive Solomon’s folly does not count, but you must do this and search a chest there if you want to get the Walton’s Gang Outfit. There are good other reasons to visit all of the above hideouts – Stranger side quests, outfit unlocks, Challenge completions. So doing these will actually support other tasks. In fact, its beneficial to do some of these more than once. Some of these hideouts will be cleared in Story Missions - this does not tick them off for 100%. Outfits, Jobs & Games Outfits: The following Outfits must be obtained for 100% by performing various actions. Spoiler The Elegant Suit Buy a scrap from the tailor at thieves landing The Bollards Twins Outfit Search Thieves' Landing. (this can be done during the Mission “On Shaky’s Ground”) Complete a Nightwatch job at MacFarlane's Ranch. Win at Horseshoes at MacFarlane's Ranch. Capture a Bollard Twins bounty alive. Defend residents of Hennigan's Stead from the Bollard Twins in a Random Event Buy a scrap from the tailor at thieves landing Treasure Hunter Outfit Silent Stead (You’ll get a bounty in this location so it can be picked up then). Complete the Stranger side quest "California". Make a profit playing Blackjack at Rathskeller Fork (Requires you to finish with more money than you started, winning the first hand of any bet will work) Capture a Treasure Hunter bounty alive Complete the Gaptooth Breach Hideout. Buy a scrap from the tailor at thieves landing Bandito Outfit Search Sidewinder Gulch (you can pick this up on the way to the Stranger side quest “Aztec Gold” Complete a Nightwatch job at Chuparosa. Defeat all players in a round of Liar's Dice in Casa Madrugada. Capture a Bandito Bounty alive Defend Mexican residents from Bandito attacks in a Random Event Buy a scrap from the general store in Chuparosa Reyes’ Rebels Outfit Search Sepulcro (can be done after the final part of the Stranger Side Quest “Eva in Peril”. A bounty and the mission “The Downfall of Captain De Santa will also take you here but I find this easiest as there is less going on) Complete the Stranger side quest "Poppycock". Complete a Horsebreaking job at Chuparosa. Complete the Stranger side quest "Love is the Opiate". Win at Five Finger Fillet in Torquemada (this is best done straight after “Empty Promises”) Buy a scrap from the General Store in Escalera (only available after completing “An Appointed Time”). US Army Uniform Outfit Search Aurora Basin (I prefer to pick this up whilst hunting in Tall Trees. A Bounty will take you hear, but reinforcements are on you very quickly at this stage). Win an Arm Wrestling match in the Pacific Union Railroad Camp. (“Lights, Camera, Action” Part II will take you here) Eliminate all other players in a game of poker in Blackwater (You can do it in the Hotel, but the Saloon is better as you can use the Elegant Suit to cheat). Complete the Stranger side quest "Lights, Camera, Action". Complete a Nightwatch job at Blackwater. Buy a scrap from the Tailor in Blackwater (only available after “The Last Enemy That Shall Be Destroyed). The US Marshall Uniform Outfit Complete the following Hideouts in 24 in game hours: Gaptooth Breach Tumbleweed Fort Mercer Twin Rocks Pikes Basin Other outfits will be acquired automatically throughout the game or doing other things required for 100%, such as the Mexican Poncho (buying a safe house in Mexico, as below), the Legend of the East Outfit (completing all 4 Challenges needed for 100%), or the Rancher Outfit (completing “And the Truth Shall Set You Free”). Other outfits such as the Deadly Assassin Outfit aren’t required but will be discussed separately later. Note in particular that two random events must be encountered to unlock some of the outfits – for the Bollard Twins, and the Banditos. Respectively in Henningans Stead and Mexico, if you see gang members attacking civilians, kill them and save their victims to unlock the scrap. These are in the schedule below, but you might not encounter these at the exact same time as me – so it pays to be on a permanent look out. Jobs: The following jobs must be completed for 100% Spoiler Nightwatch at MacFarlane's Ranch Horsebreaking at Ridgewood Farm Horsebreaking at Chuparosa Nightwatch at Chuparosa Nightwatch at Blackwater Games: You must win each type of game at least once for 100%. However, these locations are recommended, because they are also required for outfit scraps as above, which will save you having to play the game more often than necessary. Spoiler Horseshoes at MacFarlane’s Ranch Blackjack at Rathskeller Fork Five Finger Fillet at Torquemada Liar's Dice at Casa Madrugada Arm Wrestling at Pacific Union Rail Road Camp Poker at the Blackwater Saloon Safe Houses & Weapons Safe Houses: You must purchase the following safe houses for 100%: Spoiler Armadillo Rathskeller Fork Thieves’ Landing Escalera Chuparosa Casa Madrugada El Matedero Manzanita Post Note the rentable properties at Ridgewood Farm and Plainview do not count. Others count towards the 100% statistic but will be given automatically to you as you progress the story, so no action is required. I like to purchase the safehouse as soon as entering a town for the first time, money permitting. It’s helpful to have a save point so you don’t have to camp outside of town to do so – particularly if you want to advance time by sleeping to get a Bounty Poster to spawn. Also, the chest in each safe house can be opened to give you extra ammo for free. Weapons: You must purchase the following weapons for 100% Spoiler The LeMat Revolver from the Escalera gunsmith The Semi-auto Shotgun from the Escalera gunsmith The Carcano Rifle from the Blackwater gunsmith The Mauser Pistol from the Blackwater gunsmith The Evans Repeater from the Blackwater gunsmith Achievements/Trophies As stated in the introduction, this guide isn’t just about getting 100%, but also all the other achievements/trophies/accomplishments (“awards) in the game. Before starting out planning to get these, it is worth grouping each award into one of three categories. Awards you will get from completing the story mode Awards you will get in the process of reaching the official 100% stat Awards that require additional action beyond what is needed for the 100% Whilst we list them all, if you are ticking of all the things required for 100%, the only awards you need to worry about separately are those that fall under 3. 1. Awards you will get from completing the story mode Spoiler That Government Boy Complete the story mission “Exodus in America” Land of Opportunity Complete the story mission “The Assault on Fort Mercer” Sons of Mexico Complete the story mission “The Gates of El Presidio” No More Fancy Words Complete the story mission “An Appointed Time” A Savage Soul Complete the story mission “At Home With Dutch” The Benefits of Civilization Complete the story mission “And the Truth Shall Set You Free” Into the Sunset Complete the story mission “The Last Enemy That Shall Be Destroyed” 2. Awards you will get in the process of reaching the official 100% stat Spoiler Nurture or Nature? Complete the Stranger Side Quest “Remember My Family” You must complete all Stranger side quests for 100% Austin Overpowered Complete Twin Rocks, Pike's Basin, and Gaptooth Breach Hideouts. You must do all the Hideouts as part of 100% Evil Spirits Complete Tumbleweed and Tesoro Azul Hideouts. You must do all the Hideouts as part of 100% Instinto Asesino Complete Fort Mercer and Nosalida Hideouts. You must do all the Hideouts as part of 100% Strange Things are Afoot Complete a task for a Stranger. You must complete all Stranger side quests for 100% People are Still Strange Complete 15 tasks for Strangers. You must complete all Stranger side quests for 100% Clemency Pays Capture a bounty alive. You must capture one Bandito, one Treasure Hunter, one Bollards Twins Gang member alive to unlock Outfit Scraps required for 100% Exquisite Taste Purchase a rare weapon from a gunsmith. You must purchase 5 rare Weapons for 100% He Cleans Up Well! Obtain the Elegant Suit. The elegant suit is a required Outfit for 100% Frontiersman Obtain Legendary rank in any Ambient Challenge. You must complete all 4 original Challenges for 100% On the Trail of de Vaca Uncover every location on the map. You must uncover all Locations for 100% Redeemed Attain 100% in the Game Completion stat. Unlocked if you follow everything in the schedule in the sections below by the time you complete "Remember my Family" 3. Awards that require additional action beyond what is needed for the 100% These are obviously the ones you want to watch out for, because if you are going for the 100% stat, you won’t automatically pick these up. Also it is worth keeping in mind that some of these cannot be obtained over a short space of time and will span over multiple story missions and activities. Therefore when following the schedule in the sections below, you want to keep these permanently at the forefront of your mind that you should be aiming towards these always. For each of these, I note where it is a one-off requirement and has a specific point to do it in the schedule below, or whether it is ongoing and does not. Pay particular attention to the ongoing ones before you follow the guide. I can't put them in the route, as they could happen at any time, or are spread over too many missions etc. You should be aware that "Spurred to Victory" is miss-able, so if you only read one part of this section before following the route, read that bit! One-off Requirement(s) – is included in the schedule below. High Roller Win over 2000 chips in a hand of Poker. Spoiler I cover this off win winning Poker at the Blackwater Saloon (required for 100% to unlock a US Army Uniform scrap). You are given 1,000 chips at the start of the game. So if you go all in, someone calls, and you win, the award will unlock. This is easy to cheese by saving your game in the apartment above the saloon before trying and then simply reloading if you use. You should also wear the elegant suit to cheat, which will increase your chances as well. One-off Requirement – is included in the schedule below. No Dice Complete a game of Liar's Dice without losing a single die. Spoiler There’s an element of luck, but I find this quite easy, due to the fact if you stay in long enough your opponents have a habbit of making some very high and obviously false calls. So if you play it safe, you can simply wait for one of them to claim an obvious lie. Start with low numbers and let them bid it up. Pay attention to how many dice they have left, and what they are bidding to get an idea of what they might have – a number they bid they will almost certain have one or two of. If you get to the point where you really think you can’t go any higher but you don’t think the last player’s bid is wrong, consider calling spot on. You will have to play liars dice twice for 100%. Once in Thieves Landing as part of the “Lights Camera, Action” Stranger side quest, and once at Casa Madrugada for an Outfit scrap. So see if you get it in either of those. If not, come back to it at the end of the story. One-off Requirement – is included in the schedule below. What About Hand Grenades? Get a ringer in a game of Horseshoes. Spoiler This one is a bit of a pain and requires a lot more luck. Basically you should line up Marston’s arm with the pole, pull back fast, and push forward fast, aiming to let go when you are in the middle of the meter. This might take a lot of goes and could get frustrating. You have to play this once for 100% at MacFarlane’s Ranch for an Outfit scrap. If you don’t get it then, I recommend coming back to it after you get 100% or it may feel disruptive. One-off Requirement – is included in the schedule below. Fightin' Around the World Knock someone out in melee in every saloon in the game. Spoiler You need to do this at the following locations: · Rathskeller Fork · Armadillo · Thieves Landing · Escalera · Perdido · Casa Madrugada · Blackwater The main thing you want to do is pick someone who is not a gang member – otherwise you’ll have a lot of buddies ganging up on you. For example, in Armadillo, the guys wearing top hats are all part of Walton’s gang. Don’t hit one of them, go after someone on their own at the bar! I like to do this after getting 100% so the fight doesn’t cause disruption to getting other things done but upsetting the locals! One-off Requirements – is included in the schedule below. Buckin' Awesome Break the Kentucky Saddler, the American Standardbred, and the Hungarian Half-bred. Spoiler You will have done two thirds of this in getting 100%, as the Kentucky Saddler is broken in the story mission “Wild Horses, Tamed Passions” and you must break a Hungarian Half-bred for the Stranger side quest “Love is the Opiate”. Therefore you only need a separate plan to get the American Standardbred. They are found around Beechers Hope, so I do this at the point where I am doing the Marston Family missions One-off Requirement – is included in the schedule below. Dastardly Hogtie a woman, place her on the train tracks and watch her get run over Spoiler This can be done easily during the Stranger side quest “Remember my Family” One-off Requirement – is included in the schedule below. Bearly Legal Kill and skin 18 grizzly bears. Spoiler You’ll need to get 4 bears as part of Master Hunter Challenge 8 and Sharpshooter Challenge 7, just make sure you skin them as well. You’ll also be hunting foxes, racoons, elk and bighorn sheep in Tall Trees, where bears are plentiful. So keep your eye out for them whilst you are doing the Master Hunter Challenges for these animals and you should get it no problem. You should be aware that the game can occasionally continually spawn bears in a seemingly unending cycle. You kill one, it spawns another. This obviously helps get this award, but is not without its risks, as bears can kill you quickly. Keep an eye on your horse when you get off to skin a bear. If your horse freaks out and runs off, it is highly likely another bear spawn behind you if you can’t see one in the direction you are currently looking. Have a Buffalo rifle ready, and use Dead Eye to hit them between the eyes for one shot kills. One-off Requirements – is included in the schedule below. Gold Medal Earn a Gold Medal Rank for a combat mission. Spoiler I find this easy to do in the first combat mission “Political Realities in Armadillo”. You’ll have to skip the cutscenes to beat the time, so I recommend getting it on a replay so doing so doesn’t spoil your immersion in the story One-off Requirement – is included in the schedule below. Manifest Destiny Kill all 20 Buffalo in the game Spoiler You’ll be able to find the herd in Great Plains. The difficulty is that it is hard to kill all 20 in one go, as they scatter. It then become much harder to spot the few stragglers left when the herd respawns. However, the mission “At Home With Dutch” spawns the remaining herd. So save your game before you go looking for the herd and before you do that mission. Target killing at least 16 of the herd, and reload if you fail. Then do the mission, and you’ll only have 4 or fewer to kill when the herd is scripted to spawn. One-off Requirements – is included in the schedule below. Friends in High Places Use a pardon letter with more than $5000 bounty. Spoiler The main thing for me is not to do this at the end of the story, as when you hit maximum Fame, the bounty you get for killing lawmen is halved. This means in effect you need to get the equivalent of a $10,000 bounty if you do it at the end of the game. I like to do it in Mexico when Marston has fully thrown his hat in with the rebels. 5 trips back and forth between Escalera and El Presido, killing all the army personnel there will get you the bounty. Then use a Pardon letter to pay it off. Seth will give you a pardon letter in “Exhuming and Other Fine Hobbies”. I recommend keeping it for this purpose. You will likely get more from looting, but it means you aren’t relying on RNG to find another. You may wish to combine this with “Heading South on a White Bronco” (see below) as it also requires you get a high bounty. One-off Requirement – is included in the schedule below. Heading South on a White Bronco Evade the US Marshalls while riding a Hungarian Half-bred Spoiler Marshalls will chase you if you get a bounty of $2,500, but this is halved to $1,250 if your Fame is maxed out. To the above point where you get half the bounty for killing lawmen when your Fame is maxed out, it doesn’t matter when you do this in the story, you will need to kill the same amount of lawmen to get the Marshalls after you. I like to hole up in the Blackwater Hotel at the end of the story. Wiping out all the Lawmen in the town should get you a bounty high enough. Then fast travel away from West Elizabeth, and back to Great Plains should cause the Marshals to spawn. Have some medicine and horse pills ready to get away from them. Some people favour using the roof tops in Blackwater, but I don’t like this option. I find too many targets below you don’t have a line of sight to and it takes longer. You may wish to combine this with "Friends in High Places" (see above) as it also requires you to get a high bounty. One-off Requirement – is included in the schedule below. Unnatural Selection Kill one of every animal species in the game in any game mode. Spoiler This is actually relatively easy if you are going for 100% and all the other awards as many of the animals will be covered off in the challenges or story missions. The table below shows each animal type you need to kill, and which ones will be covered off automatically when achieving other tasks Animal Covered by other Activity? Location Miss-able? Notes Armadillo Challenge South of Gaptooth Breach NO Killed in Master Hunter Challenge 4 Bear Challenge Tall Trees NO Killed in Sharpshooter Challenge 7 Beaver Stranger North of Blackwater NO Killed for "Deadalus and Son" Bighorn Sheep Challenge Tall Trees NO Killed in Master Hunter Challenge 7 Boar Challenge North of MacFarlane's Ranch NO Killed in Master Hunter Challenge 4 Buffalo Achievement/Trophy Great Plains NO Killed in "Manifest Destiny" Cougar Challenge Wreck of the Serendipity NO Killed in Master Hunter Challenge 5 Coyote Challenge Hennigan's Stead NO Killed in Sharpshooter Challenge 3 Crow Mission Beecher's Hope NO Killed in "Pestilence" Deer Challenge Hennigan's Stead NO Killed in Master Hunter Challenge 2 Elk Challenge Tall Trees NO Killed in Master Hunter Challenge 7 Fox Challenge Tall Trees NO Killed in Master Hunter Challenge 6 Horse Mission All Areas NO Technically miss-able, but mounts of enemies count. Extremely unlikely you will not get this in missions with mounted weapons Rabbit Challenge Hennigan's Stead NO Killed in Sharpshooter Challenge 2 Racoon Challenge Tall Trees NO Killed in Master Hunter Challenge 6 Skunk Challenge Armadillo NO Killed in Master Hunter Challenge 6 Snake Outfit El Matadero NO Killed for the Expert Hunter Outfit (see the section on optional content below) Vulture Mission Gang Hideouts NO Killed in "The Gunslinger's Tragedy" Wolf Challenge South of Gaptooth Breach NO Killed in Master Hunter Challenge 3 Duck Stranger San Luis River YES Can be killed after completing "Remember my Family" Eagle Mission North of Tall Trees YES Can be killed during "At Home with Dutch" Bobcat NO Tall Trees N/A There is a random event where a man is chased by two bobcats. Look out for this. Owl NO North of Tall Trees N/A Only at night Hawk NO Great Plains N/A Look for a largish bird flying in Great Plains Seagull NO Black Water N/A Look for a bird flying over Blackwater Songbird NO Great Plains N/A Look for a small bird flying over Great Plains Out of the 26 animals you need, 19 you will automatically get if you are going for 100% and all other awards. 2 you should watch out for are the are scripted spawns in Missions and Stranger side quests, the Eagle (in “At Home with Dutch”) and the Duck (after the end of “Remember my Family”). These are miss-able as whilst they will appear, you have to proactively shoot them (whereas the other listed above you must kill them to progress. As long as you are alert to the opportunity it’s not difficult to get them. See the links in the schedule below for when they appear. That leaves you with only the Bobcat, the Owl, the Hawk, the Seagull, and the Songbird to get in free roam. I’ve listed the location, and a linked guide will be added at the bottom of the schedule. However, if you shoot animals you see as you go it’s highly likely you will get the award at the end of “Remember my Family” if you follow the schedule (that’s when it unlocked for me) You can check which animals you have killed in the in game menu. If you have killed any, it will appear with the number of kills. If you've yet to get one, it will be absent from the menu. One-off Requirements – is included in the schedule below. Axe Master Complete all Tomahawk challenges. These are non 100% Challenges discussed in the section below One-off Requirement – is included in the schedule below. Master Exploder Complete the Explosive Rifle Challenge. These are non 100% Challenges discussed in the section below One-off Requirement – is included in the schedule below. Ongoing – not included in the schedule below More than a Fistful Earn $10,000. Spoiler If you follow the schedule below you should get this no problem. What really helps rack up money is selling the bear skins acquired for “Bearly Legal” and the Buffalo pelts from “Manifest Destiny” down in Mexico. They command a premium there, as they aren’t animals that can be found locally. But nothing special is required here. This popped up for me soon after arriving in Blackwater Ongoing – not included in the schedule below The Gunslinger Score a headshot on any enemy using Expert targeting mode. Spoiler If you use a mouse and keyboard, you’ll get this the first time you get a headshot, for me this was in the first combat mission. If you use a control pad, you must enable Expert targeting mode in the menu, which will disable auto-aim. If you find this difficult, wait for a mission where you use a Gatling gun, like “The Assault on Fort Mercer” and you’ll probably get some accidental headshots. Ongoing – not included in the schedule below Man of Honor / Chivalry's Dead Attain highest Fame rank and either highest Honor rank or lowest Honor rank. Spoiler Getting the highest fame rank will happen automatically during the story. If you play like me, which is not getting into random fights with NPCs and making the obviously morally good choices in side quests, you’ll also get the highest honour rank with no problem. If it turns out you have a lowish honour at the end of the game, go on a rampage until it bottoms out and you’ll get the award. Ongoing – not included in the schedule below Spurred to Victory !!Miss-able!! Finish 20 Story Missions with the same Horse Spoiler This is the only miss-able award as there are only 57 story missions. I recommend planning to do this from the second mission onwards when you are given a War Horse. It’s a great horse, and compared to the other good steeds available (those covered in Buckin’ Awersome), more durable which is important here. You must save regularly, and if your horse dies, reload your game. You should back up your saves if possible as only three slots are available (easiest on the PC, not sure if this is doable on the PS5, it was for the PS3 back in the day). You also shouldn’t hitch another horse to a hitching post. So for example, don’t keep the Kentucky Saddler you break in “Wild Horses, Tamed Passions”, whistle for your War Horse and get back on it. If I recall correctly, in the first version of the game on the PS3 you didn’t originally get a War Horse in “New Friends, Old Problems”, it was a more bog standard steed. I would speculate the War Horse was introduced via DLC primarily because this award was too easily missed. Without it, you’re much more incentivised to keep the Saddler, and then if you make the mistake of hitching the horse you find with Irish at the end of “We Shall Be Together in Paradise” (not realising that saving and reloading will recall you horse to you in Mexcio), then it’s game over. Ongoing – not included in the schedule below Mowing Them Down Kill 500 enemies with a mounted weapon in any game mode. Spoiler This is probably the most annoying to get in the original RDR. Mounted weapons include the cannons at El Presidio, the Gatlings guns and Browning Guns. The problem is, you’ll maybe get a little over 200 in story missions, leaving you well short. Your only free roam options are El Presidio, and the Gatling Gun above the safe house you purchase in El Matdero. But you won’t get a continual stream of enemies come at you at either of these places. You’ll have to fast travel back and forth, forcing NPCs to respawn at each location. An easier way however is if you play Undead Nightmare as well. Undead will continually spawn outside El Presidio. You can blow them to bits with the cannon, and they can’t hit you back. Ongoing – not included in the schedule below In a Hail of Bullets Kill 500 enemies with any pistol or revolver in any game mode. Spoiler This is more viable than “Mowing Them Down”, but I still didn’t have enough at the end of the story, as I find Repeaters and Rifles to be much better for anything at medium range and beyond. If you need to boost it, either replay Gang Hideouts, or consider getting into a fight with the law and dig in at the Blackwater Hotel, as I do for “Heading South on a White Bronco” Again though, this is perhaps more easily done in Undead Nightmare. You can walk up to fresh Undead and Execute them with a revolver or pistol at ease Ongoing – not included in the schedule below Long Arm of Marston Kill 500 enemies with any rifle, repeater, or shotgun in any game mode. Spoiler This one is much easier to get. Repeaters and Rifles should be your weapons of choice, it just depends which of them is the best currently available (Winchester Repeater, Henry Repeater, or Bolt Action Rifle). This popped up for me early in Mexico without making any effort. Ongoing – not included in the schedule below Bullseye Get 250 headshots in any game mode. Spoiler Again this popped up for me early in Mexico without making any special effort. But to get this, you should be always using Dead Eye and going for headshots in every combat encounter – whether it be Missions, Bounties or Hideouts etc. To be honest though, that is the best way to win a combat in the game, regardless of whether you want this award or not! Ongoing – not included in the schedule below Additional Content This section discussed content not required for 100%, but nevertheless is included in the schedule below. These are additional Outfits, Challenges, and a Stranger side quest. Automatically Granted and Optional Outfits Automatically granted Outfits: Spoiler Duster Coat The Duster Coat is acquired by reaching Peace Maker Honour level. It is not required for 100% or any other award, nor does it convey any material benefit. It is purely aesthetic Legend of the West Outfit This will be acquired in the process of reaching 100% when the four original challenges are completed. It confers the helpful benefit of doubling your Dead Eye so it lasts twice as long. However, you just need to obtain it to get this benefit, you don’t need to wear it. It is therefore better to wear the Dead Assassin Outfit, and get the benefit of both. Rancher Outfit Automatically unlocked during the story on completing “The Outlaw’s Return”. It conveys no special benefit and is purely aesthetic. Gentleman’s Attire Available from the start of the game. Enables you to access the high stakes poker game in the Blackwater Hotel. However, I prefer to use the poker table at Blackwater Saloon, as you can use the elegant suit and cheat! This is only for hard core poker players. The Bureau Uniform Unlocked as a reward for reaching 100%. The law will not come after you when wearing it. Optional Outfits: Walton’s Gang Outfit Spoiler This was formerly a PS3 exclusive, hence not required for 100% or any award. The following tasks must be completed to unlock it. Search Solomon's Folly Complete the Horsebreaking Job at Ridgewood Farm. Eliminate all other players in a Game of Poker at Armadillo. Claim a Walton's Gang Bounty alive. Defend residents of Cholla Springs from Walton's Gang in a Random Event Purchase from the Tailor at Thieves' Landing. These items are all included in the schedule below. Walton’s Gang members will not attack Marston when he is wearing the outfit unless he attacks first. The Deadly Assassin Outfit Spoiler Arguably the most useful optional outfit of the game, again, not required for 100% or any award. To acquire it, the following requirements must be met: Search Coot's Chapel. Complete the Twin Rocks Hideout. Kill or capture Mo van Barr after collecting his Bounty poster. Win a duel in Armadillo. Complete the "American Appetites" Stranger side quest Wearing the outfit doubles the speed at which your dead eye recharges. Acquiring this outfit is covered in the schedule below. Duels can come up in Armadillo as a random event, but you can trigger one by wearing the Elegant Suit and deliberately getting caught cheating at poker. The timing of Mo van Barr may be uncertain as bounty poster targets are generally random, although he was my first target when doing the playthrough for the guide. However, in the schedule I don’t go for the outfit until I’ve done all eight bounties in New Austin, guaranteeing you will have drawn Mo van Barr at that stage. The Expert Hunter Outfit Spoiler Not required for 100% or any award, to acquire it, the following tasks must be completed: Harvest 5000lbs of meat Kill a cougar with dynamite Kill and skin 8 snakes Kill the Legendary Jackalope Complete "Deadalus and Son" Stranger side-mission This is all included in the schedule below. If you go for “Manifest Destiny”, that plus the Master Hunter Challenges should get you the 5000lbs of meat you need, and if you are short, “Bearly Legal will definitely get you over line. Killing a cougar with dynamite would be a real pain in free roam, but luckily it is very easy in “At Home with Dutch” as the link in the guide shows. 8 snakes shows some time, although an excellent spawn spot is outside the El Matadero Safehouse. If there isn’t one there, sleep in the bed, and when you go back outside there almost certainly will be one. I five there in the schedule – one for every time the guide route takes you past there, which makes it feel less of a grind. The Legendary Jackalope can apparently spawn anywhere, although around Pleasance House seems to have a good success rate for me when normal rabbits are spawning. Deadalus and Son you will be completing anyway for 100%. The benefit if you get this is that it doubles the pelts and animal parts you receive, excepting hearts. It is therefore good to wear this before hunting the Legendary Animals. The Savvy Merchant Outfit Spoiler This is not required for 100% or any award. Complete the following tasks to obtain it: Win $1000 total from Gambling Buy or sell an item at every Gunsmith Gather $200 worth of herbs Execute 20 people Complete "The Prohibitionist" Stranger side quest This is covered in the schedule below, although some of these are easier than others. In going for 100%, you’ll get $200 worth of herbs from doing the Survivalist Challenges. Likewise, completing “The Prohibitionist” will be done in the process of getting 100%. Buying something from every gunsmith will be half complete as you must buy some of the guns from Escalera and Blackwater. I get the bandolier from Armadillo, and the Sawn Off Shot Gun from Thieves’ Landing in the guide route to complete this. Winning $1,000 from gambling you are unlikely to hit without going out of your way, although getting the “High Roller” award will get you much of the way there, plus the table games required for 100% - but not all the way either. I boost this by playing Poker at the Blackwater Saloon. An alternative strategy is to keep playing Liar’s Dice immediately after the Stranger side quest “Lights, Camera, Action” (Part I – Liar’s Dice), as the stake is raised to $200 uniquely whilst you are there for this, and it is very easy to win. Executing 20 people you might get accidentally, but can be more difficult. You have to stand right next to an opponent and fire your weapon to trigger and execution animation. Getting so close obviously increases your risk of death. I recommend boosting your total in some gang hideouts, which is shown in the schedule below. The benefit is when wearing it you get 50% off purchases at the gunsmith. This really comes into play if you want to get the Explosive Rifle to do the associated Challenges and award, as it has a whopping base price of $10,000. Optional Challenges There are two Challenges weren’t in the original 2010 version of the game, and were added via DLC. These are in the re-released versions of the game. Unlike the other challenges, they aren’t required for 100%, but as mentioned above, each unlocks an award. These only 5 ranks, not 10 like the original challenges. These are both shown in the guide schedule below Tomahawk Mastery Challenges Spoiler Tomahawk 1 - Purchase the tomahawk from the general store at Manzanita Post. Tomahawk 2 - Kill one enemy with a thrown tomahawk, one with a tomahawk melee, and one while on horseback. I do this during the Blackwater Night Watch Job, you will typically get three lone enemies, so it’s ideal. Tomahawk 3 - Kill a flying bird with a tomahawk without using Dead Eye. I get this after a gang hideout as there will always be birds overhead. Tomahawk 4 - Kill five enemies in a row with the tomahawk without missing. I get this on a bounty, waiting for the henchmen to come out to me, using Dead Eye each time Tomahawk 5 - Clear a gang hideout using only the tomahawk. I find Tesora Azul to be easiest for this – it’s tightly packed, and has plenty of places to nip in and out of cover. As above, this unlocks the “Axe Master” award. Explosive Rifle Mastery Challenges Spoiler Explosive Rifle 1 - Purchase the Explosive Rifle from the gunsmith in Blackwater. As above, I recommend acquiring the Savvy Merchant Outfit and wear it before you buy the Explosive Rifle, to get a 50% reduction on it’s whopping $1,000. If your honour is high, you’ll get another 50% off, making it a steal at $2,500. Explosive Rifle 2 - Kill 5 enemies hidden in cover with the explosive rifle. Any hideout will do, although I pick Nosalida for this. Explosive Rifle 3 - Kill 3 enemies with one shot of the Explosive Rifle. I do this a Solomon’s Folly. There are only 5 opponents. I kill 2, then hogtie the other three and dump them together, rather than relying on them bunching up by chance. Explosive Rifle 4 - Kill 2 wild animals with one shot. Easy to get in the wild. Just scare a group of animals into running and pick your shot when they are close. Or wait for a pack of wolves to appear. Explosive Rifle 5 - Kill 1 enemy while wearing the US Army Uniform. Any gang hideout will do. I do this whilst unlocking the US Marshall Uniform Outfit. As above, this unlocks the “Master Exploder” Award Optional Stranger Encounter This was mentioned above, but I’ll say it again. The “I Know You” Stranger side quest does not count towards 100%, and is miss-able – you must complete it before the mission “The Last Enemy That Shall Be Destroyed” or the opportunity is gone for good. It is one of the most iconic encounters Rockstar have come up with, so you’d be a fool to miss it in my opinion. It’s in the schedule below, I recommend you don’t skip it. You now know everything you need to to use the guide schedule and route in the sections below and fully complete Read Dead Redemption. Jimbatron
Chapter 1: New Austin Part A Marston is forced by the Government, who are holding his family hostage, to capture his former gang members. The initial encounter does not go well, but fortunately he is found by a local rancher, Bonnie MacFarlane who takes him to a Doctor. Marston gets to know the ranch and it’s owners, before being given a lift to the nearby town, Armadillo. There he meets Marshal Johnson and starts laying plans to capture the first gang member, Bill Williamson. The first two missions offer opportunities to clear 4 challenges easily as they are scripted to spawn all the animals you need. It is highly recommended you take this opportunity if going for 100%, otherwise you’ll be relying on random spawning in free roam. Start you game with autosave enabled, during the first mission, “Exodus in America”, scare the birds perched on the gate of Fort Mercer into flight with an air shot. You should target getting at least 3 of them, if you fail restart. When you start the second mission, “New Friends, Old Problems”, disable auto save. You will want to kill two more flying birds by scaring ones in the trees into flight, then kill all the rabbits, and all the coyotes (and skin them) during the mission. This will net you Sharpshooter Challenges 1, 2 and 3, plus Master Hunter Challenge 1. Do not save your game in the bed after this mission, as it will advance time. It is night, which means you can do the Night Watch Job, and there will be plenty of deer outside the ranch for Master Hunter Challenge 2. When you reach Armadillo, the first mission with Marshall Johnson represents an opportunity to get the “Gold Medal” achievement/trophy. Immediately after this mission, look out for the random Treasure Hunter event to the east which is necessary to start the associated Challenge. If you want the “Spurred to Victory” achievement/trophy you need to do 20 missions with the same horse. It is therefore recommended you look after the War Horse you are given in “New Friends, Old Problems”. Manually save regularly and reload if your horse dies. Also don’t hitch another horse at a hitching post or your progress will be reset. Activity Name/Details Location Map Icon Notes Mission Exodus in America Armadillo Click here for a video guide. Horseshoes represents an opportunity to get the achievement/trophy “What About Hand Grenades”, however this requires a degree of luck even if you approach it the right way. I recommend leaving this to the end if it doesn’t pop, as it will be disruptive to your play-through. During the mission “Wild Horses, Tamed Passions” you will acquire the lasso. First capture alive unlocks the "Clemency Pays" achievement/trophy. Part C Marston and Marshall Johnson encounter Bill Williamson. Nigel West Dickens offers to help him in return for assistance in generating sales of his products, and introduces him to Seth who he says will also prove useful in gaining access to Fort Mercer. I highly recommend buying a survivalist map for later use. Note future sections where you a trip to the shops is listed. Also keep to the order carefully as the missions will take you close to several Stranger Side Quests out in the wilderness. Do them now to avoid coming back later. In the mission “Exhuming and Other Fine Hobbies”, keep hold of the pardon letter and pay the bounty off in cash. The bounty is tiny, and you can use the pardon letter later for the achievement/trophy “Friends in High Places”. Then make sure you get Treasure Hunter 4 immediately afterwards. This will avoid having to fight your way through a gang hideout to get it. If “California” (Part II) does not appear, save and reload your game. This will effectively cancel the scripted time delay before it spawns after you complete Part I. Whilst out in Gaptooth Ridge at night, be on the look out for Wolves, and aim to kill the with your knife if you see any towards Master Hunter Challenge 3. This will ensure that “Funny Man” Part II and “California” Part III will spawn. If you blasted through the guide too quickly, they might not be available yet, but saving and reloading will cancel the in game clock delaying their appearance. This makes him more determined to get the job done. Marston and his accomplices rendezvous at Fort Mercer, but events take an unexpected turn, leading to him needing to go to Mexico, where Irish offers to take him by raft. In this section, you will have the opportunity to acquire the Deadly Assassin Outfit. It is not required for 100%, or any other Achievement/Trophy, so you can skip this if you want. However, it is in my view, the most useful Outfit in the game as it recharges your Dead Eye faster, which is extremely helpful for some of the later missions and challenges. This will also take you to a gang hideout. Kill the vultures at the end and collect their feathers as you’ll need lots for a later Stranger side quest (Deadalus and Son). Jimbatron
Chapter 2: Nuevo Paraiso Part A Marston arrives in Nuevo Paraiso, a province of Mexico, in search of his targets. He encounters the De Santa, an aide of the regional governor in the local capital Escalera, who offer to help him capture the men he seeks in return for assistance, although they seem of questionable morality. Later, travelling to Chuparosa he meets the legendary Gunslinger Landon Ricketts. An encounter with another stranger there sends him back out past Escalera to a port town, Nosalida. There are some easy Treasure Hunter and Survivalist Challenges to be had on the way to Escalera. In the mission “Civilisation, At Any Price” make sure you ride ahead of De Santa when you arrive at Chuparosa and jump on the train before it moves. This will enable you to get Sharpshooter Challenge 4 during the mission (kill 5 flying birds from a moving train). You must be quick with this, or the train will set off. Sharpshooter Challenge 5 is also easy to get after you finish the mission. Part B Marston meets the regional governor, Coronel Allende, and continues to work for him, although it starts to become questionable whether he will be good to his word and help find the men he is looking for. After accompanying De Santa to fight rebels in Torquemada, he encounters the Strange Man for a second time in the wilderness. The mission “The Demon Drink” represents a good opportunity to get Sharpshooter Challenge 6. Climb up on the church roof as shown in the linked guide below and shoot two hats off enemies. Make sure you do Five Finger Fillet at Torquemada straight after doing “Empty Promises” as it is a pain to get to, even using fast travel. After completing Poppycock, you can provoke Tollets into a fight by pointing a gun at him. When he shoots at you, take cover and don’t fight back. You’ll be in and out of Chuparosa a lot in this section, so it’s ideal to start clearing the 8 bounties you need for 100%. Marston continues to try to work with both sides, not caring too much as long as it leads him to Bill Williamson and Javier Escuella. Perhaps however, he didn’t learn about the dangers of doing this with the gangs former playing off of the Grays and Braithewaites many years ago that almost ended in disaster. After helping Reyes to rob a train, Marston decides to throw his hat in fully with the rebels, and begins a one many army assaults on Escalera and El Presidio. He also encounters Charles Kinnear, and inventor looking to build a flying machine, who he agrees to source supplies for. In this section, I get the achievement/trophy “Friends in High Places” – where you have to get a bounty of over $5,000 and pay it off with a pardon letter. You don’t want to leave this too late, as when your fame rises, it becomes harder to pay off. Also, at this point in the story you won’t take an honour hit for attacking the Army at Escalera and El Presidio. Fast travel back and forth between the two, wiping out all Army personnel each time. Save each time as if you die your bounty gets wiped, so you can reload. Five trips should do it. Make sure you have a pardon letter before you start, but if you’ve been following the guide fully, you’ll still have the one Seth gave you a Benedict Point even if you didn’t loot another later on. It may be possible to get "Heading South on a White Bronco", with the description saying you must evade the US Marshalls whilst riding a Hungarian Halfbred. This implies that you can't get in Mexico, although there are some (unconfirmed as far as I know) reports that it works with top level Mexican law enforcement. If anyone can confirm, I'll gladly credit in the acknowledgements section. You will want the Horse Deed for this to get it later, so worth giving a try, but just don't do it if you haven't yet go the "Spurred to Victory" achievement/trophy, as it will reset you progress (if you followed the guide and your horse didn't die, you should have got this when completing "The Burning" back in the last Chapter however). Jimbatron
Chapter 3: West Elizabeth Part A Marston arrives in Black Water where Agent Ross insists he helps capture his old mentor and gang leader, Dutch Van Der Linde, who they have now located. Out searching for him, they find Nastas, a native who sees the danger Dutch represents and has been helping the government to stop him. The is an opportunity now to get the “Manifest Destiny” achievement/trophy. This requires you to kill all 20 of the Buffalo herd in the game. This is tricky to do in free roam, as killing all 20 in one go is difficult – the herd scatter when you attack them. Also, when you’ve killed most of the herd, it’s harder to spot them in future free roam! However, the herd is scripted to spawn in the mission “At Home with Dutch” – see part B below. Target killing at least 16 of the herd. Save before you search for it, and reload if you get fewer. This means you’ll only have to kill 4 or fewer during the mission, when they are guaranteed to spawn, and you’ll complete “Manifest Destiny” with ease. Also skin the Bufallo. The weight should get you an Expert Hunter Outfit scrap (although if you don’t get quite enough, pursing “Bearly Legal” below will finish the job), plus they sell for a high price back down in Mexico (the guide will have us return later). Save before attempting Master Hunter Challenge 5, as killing a cougar with a knife is tricky, and it’s easy to die. Have some medicine and use it immediately if a cougar gets a hit on you, as it normally takes 2 to 3 swipes to kill you. There is a lone cougar which is the easiest opportunity to kill with a stick of Dynamite for an Expert Hunter Outfit Scrap. And there is a scripted Eagle Spawn which counts towards “Unnatural Selection”. I recommend viewing the link in the table below thoroughly to see where these opportunities come up so you are prepared. Afterwards, complete Survivalist Challenge 8 and 9 which can be done with a single survivalist map, then get Treasure Hunter Challenge 9 which is close by. Then go hunting in Tall Trees. Racoons may also appear here, although Skunks seem more common. Then finish the Sharpshooter Challenges at Twin Rocks and Fort Mercer. If you do not have 20 executions yet (close range animation kills) for a Savvy Merchant Outfit Scrap, you can get these at Gaptooth Breach, Tumbleweed and Solomon’s Folly. This isn’t required for 100%. However, if you want the “Master Exploder” Achievement/Trophy, it will get you a whopping discount (50%) off the Explosive Rifle, which costs a hefty $10,000 at full price. Combined with reaching a high honour level (which you should have if you’ve played like me in the guide), wearing the outfit reduces the price to $2,500. Before you start the next mission on your return to West Elizabeth, finish Master Hunter Challenges 6 and start and complete Master Hunter Challenge 7. This requires first you get any remaining Foxes and Racoons. You are then looking for Elk and Bighorn Sheep, all of which you can find in tall trees. Whilst you are doing this, get any remaining bears you need to unlock the “Bearly Legal” achievement trophy. I got this whilst hunting Bighorn sheep, and I trigger a continual bear spawn. Whilst this is helpful, it’s also dangerous, as bears can kill you if you’re not quick. Keep an eye on your horse whilst skinning a bear. If it freaks out and trots off, probably another bear has spawned behind you. During the mission “For Purely Scientific Purposes” a lone bear will spawn, that won’t fight back. This means you can kill it easily with a knife for Master Hunter Challenge 8. You just need to make sure Nastas doesn’t finish it first. They command a premium as the animals can’t be hunted locally. You should get a fair amount of cash for this. If you are short of money, one of the best ways to boost it is hunt bears in Tall Trees, and fast travel to Escalera and sell them there. Jimbatron
Chapter 4: Epilogue Part A Marston sets out to become a US Marshal to bring justice to the man who wronged his family Buy the US Arm Outfit Scrap and stock up on explosive rifle ammo, before heading down to Mexico. Hideouts of Tesora Azul, Nosalida and Solomon’s Folly aren’t required for 100%, but will allow you to complete Tomahawk Mastery Challenge 5 (unlocking “Axe Master”) and up to Explosive Master Challenge 4 with ease. Then you need to do the hideouts Gaptooth Breach, Tumbleweed, Fort Mercer, Twin Rocks and Pike’s Basin in one in game day to unlock the US Marshall Outfit, which is required for 100%. Do not fast travel between destinations, as it uses up more in game time than travelling by horse (even though fast travel is quicker in real time, it advances the in game clock more than travelling manually). I recommend using the Treasure Hunter Outfit to start, as you can walk to the objective without being attacked, and only have to face a few bad guys on the way out. Then between For Mercer and Twin rocks call in at Armadillo, and switch to the US Army Outfit. One Explosive Rifle kill with complete the challenges and unlock “Master Exploder”. Jimbatron
Summary and Acknowledgements Hopefully this guide will provide a useful resource for players looking to complete all of the content in Red Dead Redemption. I have done a complete play-through following when constructing the guide to confirm everything is possible to do in the order of the schedule shown. However, it's not impossible I may have missed some items. Feedback, constructive criticism, suggestions and error spotting in the comments below are welcome, and will be added to the acknowledgements below where appropriate. Happy gaming and best of luck on your quest to complete the game to 100% and beyond. With thanks to @Spider-Vice for the pin, help with setting up the topics and with HTML tables (advice for previous guides that has been re-applied here). @Jisoo, TheBruceWayne@youtube and blaukralle@youtube for error spotting and suggestions This guide was put together based on how I used to run 100% back in the day on the PS3. Some of that was based from tips I learned off the internet - for example, the fact that Skunks and Racoons spawn at night behind the stage coach in Armadillo. I can't for the life of me remember the people who originally found various facts about the game from over a decade ago though! If you know an original author for a method used here, please let me know and I will credit any verifiable historical source. Jisoo
This is amazing, thank you! I did the two achievements "Heading South on a White Bronco" and "Friends in High Places" at the same time, but it might be safer and smarter to do it in Mexico. I got the 5000 bounty in Blackwater with the Hungarian Half-Bred, then evaded the Marshals by Beechers hope and paid off the bounty at Manzanita Post. I almost ran out of ammo completely since I didnt loot anyone, so got a bit stressed out at the end Getting the achievement "Spurred to victory" seems rather hard during a 100% playthrough since it can be easy to kill or lose your horse. I had to start a new game and "speedrun" through the missions until I got it. It popped after completing one of the missions that takes place in Tumbleweed, but I dont recall which one Tiny spelling mistake in chapter 1, part E where "California Part 3" is spelled "Calirfornia" "Casa Madrugada" is spelled "Magrugada" in chapter 2, part B and D Edited December 16, 2024 by Jisoo Jimbatron 1 Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/999902-rdr-100-total-completion-strategy-guide/?do=findComment&comment=1072476501 Share on other sites

I assumed from the description mentioning the US Marshalls that it doesn't, but perhaps top level Mexican Law enforcement works as well? My initial plan was to do both together at the end of the story but then I realised when your Fame maxes out you accumulate your bounty at half the rate, so getting $5,000 is a real pain (effectively it’s like 10k). Hence I did “Friends in High Places” in Mexico rather than Blackwater. But Marshalls come after you at only $1,250 with Max Fame, not $2,500 so White Bronco isn't any harder. I can put a note about an option to do them both together though. RE "Spurred to Victory" yes this is easily missed. In the Strategy section I'm writing up I'm going to mention the need to save regularly and reload if your horse dies. I might repeat it at the start of Chapter I incase someone misses this important point. Thanks for the spelling corrections. About to start work now but will get to those in a bit! I've made the spelling corrections you noted, and added the overall strategy section. I've made multiple references to "Spurred to Victory" to ensure it's not overlooked. Having gone through all the achievements/trophies, I believe it is actually the only miss-able one, as it looks like all the others can be finished in free roam, or are automatic on story mode progress. I've also added some notes on the opportunity to try for "Friends in High Places" and "Heading South on a White Bronco" together. Merry Christmas! jennab191
I just finished up this guide and before that I used your RDR2 guide. Both are amazing. Thank you for taking the time to do this! Happy new year!! I got the Nekoti Rock bounty earlier than in the guide so I wasn’t able to do tomahawk challenge 4 with it. I decided to combine sharpshooter challenge 10 (disarming 6 enemies w/out reloading) with tomahawk challenge 4 (five tomahawk kills in a row w/out missing) at Fort Mercer as there are more than enemies to tomahawk after you get sharpshooter 10. If you do get tomahawk 4, it segues straight into tomahawk 5 (completing a hideout w only tomahawks), and all you have to do is finish the remaining (roughly 3 or 4) enemies with tomahawks. I found this cheese super helpful, as it means only having to take out 5-10 enemies with tomahawks vs a full hideout. I like to plant myself on the second level on the ~southeast side of the fort facing the gallows (?) with the stairs closest to me. enemies will continuously take cover behind the crates there once the spot is open (from killing the previous enemy) this gives you the height advantage and makes it easier to target with the tomahawk and take cover quickly. This effectively combines sharpshooter 10, and tomahawk 4 and 5, finishing both challenge strands. Just something I noticed that could potentially help some people, and did not seem out of the way from the rest of the guide. So if understand you right you can start a hideout using a rifle (eg to get sharpshooter 10), then if you get Tomahawk 4 in the middle of the same hideout, Tomahawk 5 is active and if you kill the remaining hideout members, that will get you the challenge, even though you actually didn’t kill all the hideout members with a tomahawk? Presumably this is because if challenge 5 is activated mid hideout it starts counting if you killed all the gang members from that point with a tomahawk and doesn’t remember the kills prior to Tomahawk 4. Precisely. After finishing Tomahawk 4 it seems as though the game fails to recall kills made without a Tomahawk. This was a surprise to me the first time through, so I reloaded my save before taking out Mercer and going for the challenges. I used the same method and checking my progress throughout, achieving the same result. It appears as long as you complete Sharpshooter 10 followed directly by Tomahawk 4, Tomahawk 5 can be achieved within the same hideout. Was definitely a nice surprise, even though I went through the effort twice to make sure I wasn't tripping. lordoftheshire
Been waiting for this, did 100% playthroughs of gta 5 and rdr2 from your guides and I struggle to use any other guides now. This is my next month sorted, thanks for taking the time. Do you have plans of doing this type of guide for Bully, or the other gta games or la noire? Im on a quest to 100% as many rockstar games as i can before gta 6 release Jimbatron 1 Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/999902-rdr-100-total-completion-strategy-guide/?do=findComment&comment=1072527970 Share on other sites

Unfortunately due to irl commitments, it’s unlikely I’ll be able to do anything on this scale again for a while. I hope to GTA VI when it comes out, but I’ll have to see at the time. Yes420
Brilliant guide. You should do San Andreas next (if you ever get around to it). Glad you like the guide. I’d like to do GTA VI when it comes out but this takes a lot of time, unlikely I will do another guide on this scale before then. (RDR fell in a great period because I had surplus holiday at the end of the year, and I already had an idea of a route from when I played back in the day on the PS3. BigCaquino
Hi everyone, any idea on how long it takes to do this 100%? I used this guide to complete RDR2 100% last year and it was incredibly helpful Jimbatron 1 Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/999902-rdr-100-total-completion-strategy-guide/?do=findComment&comment=1072552807 Share on other sites

I’d guess 60-80hours might be typical. Depends on the player though - how much they play games and familiarity with R* games in particular. HillPhilly
Hey, Been loving your content and managed to 100% RDR2 and GTA 5 with your guides. I plan on doing this aswell. With the rumoured GTA4 remaster do you plan on doing a 100% completion on GTA4? Its a game I played on release but haven't touched since. Josiah Trelawney
I loved the GTA V and RDR2 guides so much I actually bought RDR just to use this guide! You are easily the best guide creator I have seen. Thank you for your work. I hope there will be more guides soon!
