Looks like a new weapon skin/variant for the Military Rifle. Maybe with new attachments as well?

Maybe we’ll get a couple Mk.IIs? That’s probably optimistic, more likely a skin. Sure would love an Assault SMG Mk.II with better P90 model and a Service Carbine Mk.II with M203 attachment…

So... The artwork gun is literally Military Rifle, except it has a different handguard and barrel/muzzle brake. The middle of the gun is spot on with the additional rail on side and you can see exact the same bolt, however the front is noticeably different as mentioned. The barrel length seems to be the same but handguard is much longer and Carbine Rifle MK2-like, the sling ring from the original model is still there.

Of course the gun also has a completely new black and gold skin with patterns on it, you can see gold engravings on the back of the gun alongside these geometric thingies on the black part. 
Additionally the gun is equipped with a flashlight and a briefly visible medium scope, although both of them also have new skins as luxury finish versions don't look like that.

 

I don't think this is an mk2 version because it's too similar to the original weapon, pretty much only the front is different so in my opinion this could simply be a skin that's unlocked during one of the new robberies.

I think that ship has sailed unfortunately. I lost hope on more MK2 variants a long time ago. 

This is more likely just a new skin/variant with engravings. GTA Online promotional artwork often mispresents weapons wrong with small differences between the actual in-game weapon and the art itself. 9/10 times if we actually get new weapons they are showcased as such. Once in a blue moon we will be surprised in the dripfeed like they did with the Railgun. Time will tell if we get more goodies along the way in terms of unlocks such as (Yusuf Amir Luxury Finish) variants, weapons or skins like @HeySlickThatsMe mentioned earlier. 

 

More weapons with the same style in the artwork are on the Combat Pistol, Pistol,  PDW, Sniper Rifle, Carbine Rifle, Assault Rifle, Micro SMG, and the Marksman Rifle. We also have the "gilded" variants for the Advanced Rifle and the AP Pistol. Maybe we get a new category called engraved? I'm all up for a new Heavy Rifle MK2 variant.

A telescopic baton or cattle prod melee weapon, maybe the Meat Cleaver from GTA VC.
 

The Pistol (Glock), Assault Rifle (AK47) and Combat Sniper (PSG1) from GTA IV.

 

The Advanced MG (M-249) and the Advanced Sniper (DSR-1) with explosive ammo from TBoGT.
 

A proper russian made Kalashnikov (with updated model and sound) on par with the Service Carbine/Heavy Rifle would be decent.
 

A Dragunov SVD, or a Dragunov SVU sniper rifle would be cool too.

If it is a reskin and the artists decided to draw an entirely different gun for no reason, the weapon is new as it is seemingly based on the Desert Tech MDR heavily. The handguard, charging handle placement, and cheekguard are almost identical as it is depicted in the artwork. Mk. II's could be back after all or it's just another pointless assault rifle. Either way interesting stuff.

I wish. I don’t think so though, it still looks to be more AUG than anything else. Granted, it does have a more modern handguard which is what made me think Mk.II, so there’s something more to it than a luxury tint based on that alone. Have never been a fan of those tints, I get what they’re going for but I would prefer more utilitarian options personally. Maybe there will be a little something something hidden in the dripfeed, although the only things that would entice me are actual new firearms or unique/worthwhile melee weapons (katana, chainsaw, foot long double ender).

My first thought was the MDR, but if you pay attention you can notice that several details from Military Rifle are still there, like the sling ring, charging handle, the side rails on the back and overall the middle body, but guess we'll see

MDR Would've been cool but it feels like yet another waste of a slot, we already have several bullpup AR's in the game and the artwork one doesn't have that many changes when compared to Military Rifle which makes it as pointless as WM29 pistol

Doubt it. then again, they've added a ton of the same bullsh*t looking cars over the years.

The similarities which you’ve stated could further imply a Mk. II being the case, but I overall agree with your statement. What I do find interesting though is the actual placement of the charging handle which is identical to the MDR. A keen eye can see that the vertical artwork for AOS actually slightly reveals the body of the gun more as the text is moved down. Could be another gun mashup as Rockstar has done that before, or it could be nothing at all and the artists decided to draw a new gun for fun.

I’m going to bank on it being either a tint or artistic license taken for the artwork. If it is new then I wish they would stop with the doppelgänger weapons… 

 

Edit: Eh… after inspecting the Mil Rifle again in game, the only difference between the current one in game and the artwork is the handguard. Rails are the same, ejection port, charging handle, flashlight placement, optic is mounted in exactly the same place. Frankly it doesn’t even look different enough to be a Mk.II… Also, we’ve never had a skin that changes the furniture on the weapon, so this is definitely a bit perplexing.

God, I wish they'd just give us a Glock platform. That'd be the only pistol I'd use.

And being "agents", it makes sense to give us a Glock now, since it's a commonly used pistol for a lot law enforcement agencies.

The Military Rifle is based on the Steyr AUG and its has 2 gas regulators on the front of the housing. 



However, the rifle in the artwork has a completely new barrel casing along with the housing with these plugs being absent and it screams very much MK2-ish to me. 

 

Also the rail looks completely different.  The barrel casing is similar to the Carbine Mk2 convertion. 

 

So it's either a MK2 convertion, because rifle skins or variants dont change that much of the rifle aside from....well the skin, or it's a completely new rifle but i very much doubt it. Time will tell!

So, to me, I originally thought the it looked like the original carbine rifle's suppressor. But I've had a closer look, and I think you're right, and it might be a new MK2 upgrade to something like the Military Rifle.

The reason I think this, is because the Military Rifle is the only rifle in the game that has a rear mounted magazine that slightly curves forward from the center point of the weapon, as well as having a larger trigger guard at the front of the weapon with quite a thick rear stock. All atributes you can kind of make out from the image displayed in the teaser art.

 

Another possibilitty could be the Advanced Rifle MK2, since it's another one with a rear mounted magazine. But no other atributes, where the militart rifle has all 3.

On a serious note though there are no Luxury finishes for any MK2 weapons so interested to see wether this is an entirely new gun, mk2 or just the artist's creativity running wild

Yeah... I'm assuming (on the purely technical sense, ignoring the live service rollout aspect of it) they're only wanting to add new features such as flashlight tints (blue in this case) etc to Gen9, especially now that it's coming to PC at some point, rather than bothering with adding more stuff like that to Gen8. That texture looks really high quality too so.

Damn it, I don’t own the Military Rifle (or the Battle Rifle), they’re not good enough.

 

I think a Russian weapon like a Kalshnikov or Dragunov sniper rifle would be more fitting with the return of Pavel.
 

What else would work with the Agent/FIB theme, a Glock pistol?

Technically every week with the Thursday changes being sent to them on Wednesday

 

And yeah hopefully it's got more guts than the OG military rifle.
