GTA TDE - The VGD Ultimate Fixes and Improvements Comparison Thread

You know how they could have pleased die-hard purists? Add a graphics toggle button. Halo and Tomb Raider can do this but apparently this is an impossible task for PS2 games. Also, actually porting the game to the Unreal Engine instead of putting the old game through one big translation layer would have helped a lot. They could have easily done the "best of both worlds" tactic but consciously decided to cut corners.

I have played the Tomb Raider remasters, and those three games' remasters are pretty different from the definitive edition. As much as I love the Tomb Raider series, the change in graphics isn't as drastic in the definitive edition, so it is easier to switch them on/off while playing.

Not an excuse. Halo 1 and 2 Anniversary change the entire art style. Not just visuals, but also sounds. All reversible with one button push. You can't tell me that such a thing is infeasible for a product like this.

Just saw some Halo 2 footage where the graphics get switched, kinda crazy.

I think the biggest thing that's overlooked here is that even with all the visual improvements, there is still a LOT of PS2-era jank with these games.

The improvements are appreciated if nothing else however. If they redid all the sh*tty models and polished up the wonky animations, this thing MIGHT be finally worth it.

The trees in general need a redo. Just generic sh*tty assets that aren't even geographically correct.

Aren't most of the trees ripped from remastered GTA5 and RDR2?

Yup. Wrong species pretty much. OG Trilogy had more of those Queen Palm, Royal Palm type trees.

The poorly AI-upscaled textures are one thing, but the use of HD Era assets is really out of place. Aside from the trees, doesn’t the DE use some V ads that literally feature smartphones?

No, those games have more detailed ones, and seen to be accurate for the most part.

They are ones from GTA V though, they just look out of place in the Trilogy. A lot of assets were imported from GTA V including textures, which was a really odd decision considering it caused a million anachronisms, even into the far future  (one of the fax machines is a GTA VI-only brand, seen in the trailer now)

I feel like this is just polishing a turd, the damage has already been done. If you want to play these games you should obtain the original PS2 versions, and disregard the defective edition entirely

Unfortunately, this turd is the only way the average consumer will play the games going forward. Die hards like us will mod the game and do whatever, but the reality is the average joe couldn't run the old versions even if they got their hands on them still. I don't think many people are going to go and buy a PS2 and not everyone is tech savvy enough to install mods either.

So this is what they got and it makes sense to keep updating it. There is was clearly a large amount of work done in the last patch but there is still a larger amount of work to be done. Especially since game breaking bugs from the mobile ports are still there.

If you're on a modern console, there's no option to play the originals.

On Xbox, you can pay for dev mode, and put emulators on it. That way, you can play the original versions with emulator enhancements (higher resolutions, widescreen fan patches, etc...). That's what I would recommend to any Xbox Series S/X owner.

Seems overall VGD fixes covered some ground but there's definitely more to cover. About 150 fixes (collisions, mapping, etc). Out of BadInfo's 505 counted issues.

While his list isn't perfect it's definitely a work of effort to document and report on what was and is broken and what's now fixed. If we get another 2 patches I wouldn't be surprised to see the fixes reach about 250 or more.

I don't know if this was already fixed in an earlier patch or what, but Lance's cop outfit model in the Vice City mission "Cop Land" was updated.GrandTheftAutoViceCityDefinitiveEditionScreenshot2024_12.06-19_03_26_22.thumb.png.35a8e79874927bda14e40cbc36fe648e.png

For reference, at DE's launch, Lance's cop outfit model was just recycled from the original version of the game with worse textures.

Definitely new. I played this mission like 3 days before the patch dropped and it was still an ugly upscale. Good to see.
