What do you think about GTA games set in the past?

GTA III and GTA LCS: set in the 2000s - GTA IV: set in modern day
GTA SA: set in the 90s - GTA V: set in modern day
GTA VC and GTA VCS: set in the 80s - GTA VI: set in modern day

Personally, I love seeing how cities have changed and I am looking forward to VI, but I keep wondering how amazing a GTA game set in the 80s would be with the technology we have now.

I think it helped add to the charm that each GTA (at least the 3D ones) were very much their own very uniquely stylized experiences. I think the fact that 4, 5 and now 6 have been set in the modern day is kind of boring, really. GTA5 really still feels pretty contemporary even over a decade into the future. Part of the reason RDR2 was a nice experience is because it was a historical time brought to life with such detail and interactivity that we haven't been able to see before, and it was nice to feel so immersed in this long bygone era.

The fact we're getting a game taking place in Vice City but not in the 80s really irks me. I really hoped that they would go back to doing a period game, other than Mafia (which lets be real is barely an open world game) there are very few of them in this genre and they were really good at it back in the day. The parody and dramatization on terrorism and commercialism and the internet and social media have gotten really stale, and GTA VI isn't even out yet. But I guess it's harder to make GTA Online 2 DLC for 10 years when you're restricted to using 40 year old tech.

cant remember

It's funny to me how GTA3 and IV are set in "modern day" but they have themselves become period pieces with the crown vic cabs, touch button phones with overpriced ringtones, lots of people with CRT televisions/monitors, cop cars with spinning lights instead of LED light bars etc.

If I could have everything the way I wanted I would pick both, modern day now and a DLC or Stories addition later. My era of choice would be late 90's early 2000's because those are my favorite cars, new models being rounded and old 20 year old boxy cars still common to see driving too.

I can't believe that people 2 years later are still soying for a 80s period time GTA game. We're not returning to that era. The 80s have been milked to death at this point and seeing another 80s nostalgiabait media starts to make me mentally sick. Stop sneeding and accept that we're having a modern-day GTA whatever you like it or not.

I dont really understand those verbs you used but I cant really think of an open world game set in the 80s released in recent history. I don't even particularly care for the 80s, I was just hoping for something different since both 4 and 5 were set in current year already. Sorry for wanting a little variety I guess.

Personally I find GTA III and GTA IV interesting for the fact that both games are essentially period pieces now even though they were modern for the time.

For some reason GTA V doesn’t quite feel like that yet despite being 11 years old. Then again 2013 doesn’t feel that much different to now compared to 2001 and 2008 atleast to me.

In saying that it’s always fun to revisit the past. I know it’s probably never going to happen, but a HD era GTA in the 60s or 70s would be cool since it would be before my time, but not so far out it’s something I couldn’t relate to in some way.

I wish they go back so sick of modern times GTA. If it where up to me I would set the next one in Liberty City in 1999 with the Y2K craze there's so many things they could do with that era from the fashion to the music the nostalgia for me would be off the rails.

I beg to differ. Listening to the OG versions of Radio Mirror Park and Radio Los Santos now definitely captured an era of music and style that isn't around anymore.

I was mostly talking about culture, themes etc, but I suppose that’s a fair point.

I’m not a huge music buff so I can’t really relate too much, but each to their own.

I'd be interested in seeing different eras, especially since the last few GTAs have all been set in modern times. However, I wonder if Rockstar would be willing to explore the 80s, the 90s or even the early 2000s again when they've captured these eras pretty well in the past, maybe they don't want to retread old ground because of that. Of course there are always more stories that can be told in those eras, and with how much the series has evolved since the beginning of the HD era, they can make some really immersive period pieces with really compelling stories.

What's weird is that games "set in modern times" have become period pieces in their own right.

GTA III was "set in modern times" in 2001, yet now it's seen as being a time capsule of the turn of the millennium era 1999-2001.

GTA IV was also "set in modern times", yet now it's a period piece of the mid to late 2000s (in particular 2006-08).

That's kind of the way it goes. Movies, books, video games, etc are "set in modern times" until time moves forward, and suddenly they are period pieces.

Personally, I'd love to see another open world crime game set in 1999-2001 around the Y2K turn of the millennium era, whether it be a GTA game, a Saints Row game, a True Crime/Sleeping Dogs game, etc. That era deserves way more attention.

Why is it only 80's and modern day times ? Why not 90's or early 2000s?
