TBH this is just a recommendation.

No, games under 20 GB do not get preloads at all on Steam. Those are official guidelines that Valve will follow once you contact them. They're just telling you to CONSIDER that if your game meets these requirements. I have not seen a game under that size get preloads approved.

I forgot that was a thing, so RDR will not have a preload for Steam, based on not just that but many other games, including the week-old Life is Strange early access which is 19 GB so it couldn't get a preload - yet it did on consoles.

Can't remember any small games getting pre-loads so yea that might be a hard rule and not something you can talk your self around.

Pre-load and release times is one of Steam's weaknesses. It's gotten better in recent years but it's still not great. There was a time when midnight launches on Steam just completely stopped happening across the board, meanwhile console had rolling midnight launches as standard. You do now see midnight launches on Steam here and there but it's still iffy.

Ok then. If Life is Strange added one more mandatory voice language to the download, they could easily hit 20 GB 😛

Rockstar Games save quite a lot of space by having only one spoken language - English.

Well, sure :p My point was more that RDR is small enough that it doesn't fall under Steam's requirement for 20 GB or more, so no preload most likely.

Isen't there also some bad thing with preload aswell like for a game like RDR1 is 12 then you would need like 24 instead of 12 because it has to unpack the game?

That's just how it works in general with having to patch or unpack a compressed or encrypted file. If your connection is fast enough to download like 20 GB in just a few minutes, it's sometimes better to just download it at launch rather than preload because of this - I did that with Horizon Forbidden West's 120 GB because it would probably take longer than the download to fully decrypt that preload. For those with slower connections and a decent CPU/SSD though, the decryption/extraction is likely preferrable.

This happens with some larger patches to Steam games too.

Sales aren't too hot, only stop #86 on global Steam chart. The price is a problem :(

Here in my country it is 1/3 of the minimum wage, I would hardly buy it now without being on some promotion, I will have to wait or get it through other means.

It is possible that it's just an update applied to the launcher unless it varies on other platforms, either that or someone's telling porkies ;)

Going back to Spiders post above, I don't think we'll be seeing one.

It's preload, not just a random update.

RGL got an update and after that it showed the preload button on the game's page. It's around 9GB.

But yea I guess it's only for RGL users, at least for now.

Can you like, provide a screenshot, lol?

Edit: That settles it, I guess on Steam we'll just have to wait on release. Valve's guidelines suck.

They've adjusted the release timing on Rockstar Store and Epic Games.

I suppose it's because Daylight Saving Time is in effect, so the release would be at 10 AM EDT. When Rockstar released the Trilogy DE at 3 PM GMT, Standard Time was in effect, so it was released at 10 AM EST.

Really? And not Steam?

As we were discussing, it's likely the file size limit.

Probably nothing else, like GTAIV, MP3 etc

I mean of course, probably nothing else apart from Steam / EGS / RGL, depending on where you buy it from.

Theoretically getting it from RGL means less DRM because it's only the launcher itself into play.

RDR2 had Arxan anti-tamper, GTA Trilogy didn't. It'll be interesting to see what this one has.

Oh word, I had no idea there was a hard size limit for pre-loads on Steam. They really ought to rethink how they handle them soon. Not to say we absolutely need pre-loads for 10-12 gig games, but more on how early you can have pre-loads for bigger games start up. I feel like console pre-loads are way more generous nowadays.

In 2019 I bought RDR2 in a year-end promotion at RGL, it is my only game that I have on the launcher
