I suspect things will be a bit more organized for the PC release and that the executable will be just called “rdr.exe” or “reddeadredemption.exe”.

PlayRDR.exe

RecklessGlue540

I would have expected RDR1.exe more tbh, but yeah doesn't really matter I guess lol.

PlayRDR.exe is likely not the main one either, if we judge based on the other games / releases. RDR.exe as the main one then... and PlayRDR.exe for the launcher stuffs.

Interesting

What's more interesting is that the PS3 version had exclusive content that was only ported to X360 with the release of the Game Of The Year edition, I wonder how that all adds up lol

Solomon Folly, Walton's Gang outfit and a RGSC challenge. They must've been presented as compromises for the Playstation users considering the god awful PS3 version.

Fascinating, but yeah, it’s not too surprising in hindsight, considering the inferior visuals and performance on PS3. Things like the unorganized file structure of the original release, the “Wives of Rockstar San Diego” open letter and lack of a contemporary PC port already had me convinced that the spaghetti code rumors were true; this just reaffirms it, IMO. If nothing else, it’s more evidence that the game’s development was messy (and crunch-laden).

Just goes to show how great of a job Double Eleven has done fixing up the file structure and getting the game to run (and perform quite well) on PS4 and Switch. Hopefully we will be saying the same for the PC version as well.

It’s a shame that Xbox players are missing out on 60FPS, though (but at least the 360 version is $10 cheaper and still has multiplayer). I’m not holding my breath, seeing how things have gone with RDR1; but if D11 tackles GTA IV next, it would be nice to have their improvements make it to all platforms. The final mission is still bugged on any Xbox console newer than the One S because of the higher frame rate. And, at least in my experience, the PC version has only gotten to a reasonable state in the past few years thanks to a mix of DXVK/Proton; FusionFix; and using modern hardware to brute force your way past the port’s poor optimization. (EDIT: In other words, R* themselves haven’t done much to improve things, aside from removing GFWL and combining the Episodes with the base game back in 2020, albeit at the cost of the multiplayer. I’m pretty sure the Complete Edition patch even reintroduced the final mission bug that still plagues the Xbox version, despite having already been fixed in version 1.0.8.0.)

Both GTA IV and RDR were 640p with FXAA and plenty of frame-drops to low 20's on PS3. Meanwhile Xbox 360 was 720p with MSAA x2 and more stable frame-rate.

But starting from Max Payne 3 and then GTA V PS3 ports were about equal to Xbox 360 in terms of image quality and frame-rate, the Cell processor was really the pain in the butt.

I really hope GTA IV port is next, as it's not even playable normally (I don't count paid Streaming) on PS4 and PS5.

It seems like the earlier iterations of RAGE were just tailored towards 360 in general. It would help explain why IV's PC port turned out the way it did (on top of R* Toronto just being rushed). MP3 is when R* got its act together and developed bespoke builds for each platform in tandem with one another, and it paid off; that game and GTA V are more optimized on PS3 and PC than previous games, to the point that you could argue PS3 was the superior 7th Gen version of V (IIRC, mirror reflections are slightly better on 360, whereas PS3 has several minor improvements in other areas, although the digital versions of both have streaming issues on HDDs).

MCLA in Xenia Canary with Xenia Manager is great, although only when you get in test drive mode for any car then the cops are gone for good for me atleast.

Got RDR 1 running in an emulator of the switch with a trainer and some more mods too.

Interesting

That's how seventh gen worked. PS3 was always an afterthought, not only was it a nightmare to develop and port games but most gamers were playing on a 360. Still not as bad as PC lmao.

Tbh, this current gen is the first gen where we can clearly see both consoles are the priority and PC is the afterthought. Previous gen we can clearly see the PS4 was the priority. Pretty much the leading console is always the priority

GTA IV was a Xbox 360 sponsored game. Rockstar always play with the winning side. Only after the PS3 started catching up to the 360 that they started caring about optimizing their stuff. PS4 and PS5 sold way more than their Xbox counterparts and Rockstar has sided with Sony through both generations.

And yeah, playing the digital version of GTA V on PS3 is a nightmare. Actually, anything that isnt through a bluray is a nightmare, many games back then would install a lot of stuff on the HDD so they could "double-stream" through the HDD and Blu-Ray. Those games dont work properly when using only a HDD. AC Brotherhood is awful when played digitally

Xbox 360 compared to ps3 was a bit easy to program for while ps3's cell arch is just head banging puzzle. Now even some dormant Jap devs like Genki with new Tokyo Xtreme Racer are coming back.

Initially, GTA IV and RDR1 were supposed to be “remastered” by Grove Street Games, but R*/T2 cut ties with them after it became clear that the general public was not eating up the slop that was the DE. (Why this wasn’t done back in 2014/2015 after the release of SA Mobile’s disastrous console ports is beyond me, but that’s beside the point.) The implication being that IV, RDR1 and other potential rereleases would have suffered a similar fate. (EDIT: I don’t remember whether or not T2 planned to acquire GSG outright; cant find Tez’s original tweet at the moment.)

I imagine that not much work (if any) had been done with Red Dead when GSG were still involved. Whatever the project was going to be, it ended up being reduced in scope to a straightforward port and development reigns were handed off to Double Eleven (while the mobile Trilogy updates wound up being helmed by Video Games Deluxe). AFAIK, the only remnant of those original plans is that the Switch files refer to the game internally as “rdrremaster.exe”.

Rockstar better pay proper respect this time with trilogy remaster for 25th or 30th Anniversary. I am baffled how Resident Evil and Silent Hill series are better remastered. Me not in horror genre for now.

GTA III's 25th anniversary is in just two years (how the time flies!). I wouldn't expect anything that soon; I'm sure GTA VI PC will be the major release of 2026. Rockstar has been putting out some sort of title every year since 2021 to meet Take-Two's demand for a more consistent release schedule. Because of their modern workflow (i.e. all branches of R* work together to release a single, but large-scale title every ~5-7 years), most of these have been outsourced rereleases: the DE in 2021 (Grove Street Games), E&E in 2022 (in-house), RDR1 PS4/Switch in 2023 (Double Eleven), RDR1 PC this year (once again ported by D11), and GTA VI on consoles next Fall (barring any delays, which my inner-pessimist won't rule out just yet). EDIT: A PC version of E&E in between RDR1 PC and GTA VI also seems likely, going by recent Steam and RGL leaks/data-mining/etc..

Even the 30th anniversary seems a bit iffy. R* and T2's actions (or inaction) suggest they're perfectly content with leaving the Trilogy to rot in the state that it's in on consoles and PC for the foreseeable future, with the only accessible version of the originals left on the market being a bundle on the RGL (which, while better than the DE, still requires downgrading the games to restore the missing songs and to use mods). And even then, I'm convinced that R* just relisted it there (and only there) as a half-hearted response to the RGL server issues rendering the DE unplayable on PC at launch (otherwise, the originals would have also been relisted on Steam and PS4/PS5 when R* made that apology. Microsoft never added them to the BC program, so sadly, Xbox users would have probably been stuck with the DE regardless).

Anyone has any idea what hour or timezone Rockstar usually releases their game?

This was the time when GTA 6 trailer 1 was supposed to be released, so maybe it will be the same time for the release of RDR1 on PC.

Tbh I don't think start from this gen, xbox can be viewed as something worthwhile even comparing to pc for many studios giving the embarrassing hardware capability of their main platform series s, and the lower then ever market shares doesn't help for one bit

Imagine the GTA Trilogy getting a remaster like the Core Design Tomb Raider games which are amazing remasters ... the GTA franchise would have deserved it. What sucks the most is that there is no way to play the original form of these games on the Switch. I would have paid 60 just for simple ports but instead they left us with this unplayable disgusting mess!

What?

This is factually not true for a growing amount of the industry. Xbox has diminished quite massively in terms of importance to all publishers, while PC has grown significantly. There are a growing amount of publishers who see PC as their #1 priority. PC is pretty much along side PS5 in terms of AAA sales right now, bigger in some cases. It could well be the de facto biggest market for all developers sometime this decade.

R*'s stance on PC is pretty much an anomaly at this point. They're virtually the last major third party publisher who do not release their games day 1 on PC.

I think the gap for GTA 6 will be 12 months maximum. They will want to start earning money from the online part of the game as soon as possible.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's 6 months as it's enough time to get enough sales from double dippers.

To be honest the original games are much much better with mods especially gta vc with classic axis and more, its even better then ps2 version for me since I can rotate the camera around Tommy and not like in first person in pcsx2. Also while Xenia was great for me, its still in development plus with traffic disable mod in most of my pc games I don't feel the need for the emus, GTA V is like MCLA 2.0 for me and much better indeed since the 2008 game is a bit darker and no ability to get out of cars (I always wanted that since playing NFS U2).

The fact that RDR 1 now is getting a proper pc port with 12 Gigs space requirement is a fresh breath of air for me compared to NFS HPR which is 45 GB on pc and its switch and the original versions re under 10 Gigs.

However if we take Midnight Club 2 for example the pnach cheats file applies across the whole game in pcsx2 compared to just typed in cheats on pc version in arcade mode.

With that I managed to beat Savo more then 40 times since then in pcsx2 then having nothing with pc version but crashes after crashes even after Windows Vista fix patch.

I am glad RDR 1 is finally heading to pc and today Steam Deck exists because while the switch is ok, Nintendo's stance on taking down videos of emus and its constant going after emu community has put me off from Ninti Emus, its games and consoles for good, even Microsoft and Sony don't seem to have any problems with us running their devices emus on everything,

so yeah.

29th October 2024 Here we come to Tahiti for Mangoes.

That's what I imagined they will do, they already existed on steam.. just fix them a bit to work on modern system, a few better textures and shadows and add achievements, they were that good already, perhaps III and VC needed more attention but nothing more. Something like what Doom, Turok and Quake remasters got aside Tomb Raider but we didn't get that. At least RDR is same engine, it's exactly what everyone asked for let's see how it plays. As much as I would like a small Bully remaster too since it has issues on PC I don't see it happening, at least they didn't remove it from the store yet (that I believe happens due to license issues only?).

Honestly Rockstar needs to come to its senses to do day one pc releases, even Sony may start doing it with their next next first party games.

It already happened with their live service game.

Say all you want but GTA DE is kinda good nowadays.

If they include the Netflix fixes on console and PC I would 100% finally call them the Definitive Editions of those games.

The controls are way better, the optimization is way better since launch, it works out-of-the-box so no downloading modpack to have basic stuff working, etc. Plus it is available on modern consoles.

Purists may not like the graphics or art style but the truth is your average consumer will: search for GTA San Andreas on whatever store he's using, see this new Definitive Edition with nice graphics and buy it and not care at all about the issues unless ppl point it out and alienate him.

I just wish they'd let us swap between the original graphics and the new artstyle at the push of a button as the Tomb Raider remasters do it.
