A Grand Theft Auto IV Concept

Special Thanks to @Datalvarezguy, @Jeansowaty, @donnits and more

It's Labor Day 1997, Gerald McReary's spent the last two years hiding out-of-state for the heat to die down after a particularly catastrophic job that killed his cousin— but he's arrived home in Liberty City today, moving back in with his family as he remains separated from the wife he's trying to get back to, and is once again operating underneath his Father whom he swore he'd never work for again, if only to repair his tarnished reputation, as well as try to reacquaint himself with his younger brother and sister, who have grown into young adults since he's been gone.

Pa McReary is convinced that not only can they reclaim their old territory, but that he can claw his way back to the family's mid-century status and regain a foothold on the city that's become fundamentally different in the time since then, as long as he has the loyalty of his sons, and that Gerry will work at his direction. What he doesn't know is that while he believes Francis is still protecting him and the family business from disruption or consequence, Frankie's the one trying to get Gerry to help him with just the opposite. Patrick, in the meantime, dropped out of school while his brother was away, and if there's any time left to try and steer him back in the correct direction, it's swiftly running out as their father's influence over him has gone unchallenged without him around.

Gerry has to become an errand boy for nearly every other criminal faction, even those once enemies, in the hopeless fight back to the family's former glory... But he may just have his own plans to adhere to yet.

CAST

(Subject to change, pictures needing to be added, entries needing to be written, mind the mess)

Gerald McReary (b. 1973) is the twenty-four year old middle child of the McReary clan— saddled with the grief and shame of his closest cousin getting killed on his watch after pulling a series of jobs only meant to benefit himself, as opposed to the whole family's operation, headed by his father. Spending nearly two years up in New England, both running from the law and isolating himself away from his family's judgement, also separated him from his wife; and he may be sorely underestimating just how detrimental it all was to their marriage.

Colin McReary (b. 1938) is the previously unseen patriarch of the McReary Clan, who's dead by the events of Grand Theft Auto IV. In 1997, he's alive and... Not exactly well, but alive nonetheless. While everyone's telling Gerry that he’s “mellowed out in his old age,” and he's a pathetic, now completely greyed wretch in comparison to the version of his father he left behind, he's still an explosive man by any normal person’s standards. He believes he's doing Gerry a massive favor by letting him move back into the house and do jobs for him, and that he owes him his life.

Tobias Petropolous (b. 1974) is perhaps, one of Gerry's only friends, and it's been that way since middle school— he's one of the only people on the planet who seems to be endeared by his constant antagonizing. He's a well-connected and self-proclaimed Greek Sex God, who is as impulsive as his hair is beautiful. He was tasked to look after Packie and Katie while Gerry was away, though whether he did a good job is up to debate. A talented gunman, he'd be a real asset to the family's activities, if it weren't for his raging coke addiction making him increasingly unreliable.

Patrick "Packie" McReary (b. 1979) is eighteen years old, and while once enthused with his art, and the arts, after dropping out during the last stretch of his junior year and staying home, goofing off, getting high— he's hit a wall. Spending too much time with their Pa, Colin's illusions of grandeur about the family's operations not being a pitiful wraith of its former self have affected him deeply.

Kate McReary (b. 1980) is a seventeen year old, incredibly normal teenage girl on the surface— while she's made the honor roll and she's one of the biggest stars of her high school drama club, she's struggling to come to terms with who her family really is, the lives they lead, now that this is not longer being actively hidden from her as much as it was when she was small.

Sgt. Francis McReary (b. 1963) may think he only has what's best in mind for the family, and maybe he does, but he's still self-absorbed and power hungry. The progression of his career is teetering on his transfer to Westminster, of which he keeps delaying, trying to make sure that before he's left the borough, he can make sure the family is safe in their own home.

Maureen McReary, (b. 1935) wife of Colin, mother of their five living children, is noticeably quieter since Gerry's last seen her, prone to phases of glazed over catatonia. She's gotten to the point where she thinks she's reached her limit; she doesn't know how much longer things can go on this way, and doesn't know how or why she's the only one that can feel the walls closing in on the situation the family's put itself in.

Laurie McReary (née Fisher, b. 1973) is convinced that Gerry only married her right out of High School as a vehicle for him to leave home, as opposed to whatever love he felt for her. Since he's been away, she's sold off their house they once shared in Alderney and moved back into her parents' place in Beach Gate where she grew up.

"Sailor" Sam O'Callaghan (b. 1934) is the longtime confidante of the Family, whose cultivation skills put them on top in the days of the marijuana smoke-filled Folk Revival, with a product unlike any other. His special strain that was the fan-favorite of Liberty City's finest improvisational comedians was probably the one thing that kept them hanging on for much longer, even as they lost ground in the seventies. But frankly, he's an out-of-touch antique.

Michael Keane (b. 1980) and his family have lived beside and shared a wall with the McReary home for nearly two decades. Though he tries to be a good friend, he's still the target of constant ribbing when hanging out.

Gordon Sargent (b. 1977) was born here in Dukes, though lived for a significant time up east, and moved back here with his mother around the corner from the house, meeting and befriending Packie and Michael in the time that Gerry was gone.

but I will definitely be using the ZR350, the Declasse Cabbie, and i started working on a 1997 New Weevil a few months ago, but may have to start over again from scratch.

RADIO

Including, but not limited to...

tutOHbs.png

Leisure Radio is a channel specializing in the greatest sounds put to plastic, at least, that's what you think if you were hitting the town when polyester leisure suits had just become the most happening thing, fondue was an exotic new way to enjoy bread and hot cheese, and you thought several different shades of brown, orange, and mustard were the absolute perfect choice for the interior design of your home— of which wasn't complete until you put in the conversation pit in the middle of your living room. (this is my radio station that's more or less working in-game right now with its full initial tracklist of 15 songs, as inidividual tracks and not one linear mix like the Classics)

w6NUoo4.png

Singing Moon FM is one of Liberty City's finest stations, with emphasis on some of the greatest songwriters of all time. (But is subject to turn into a station associated with Bob Dylan as much as Tuff Gong as is to Bob Marley. I haven't really decided yet.)

0iFnM8U.png

Big Deal Radio features the greatest and loudest Walls of Sound and Soul music that the 60's and 70's had to offer. The tragic exploitation, underpayment, and gross mistreatment of talent seems to make these tracks sound that much better.

4yllhGe.png

The Vibe looked a little different in 1997, but the genre is ultimately unchanged, if not peaking at this point in time.

YvZDK7i.png  [ REDESIGN TBD ]

Radio Broker is still the coolest, current rock station broadcasting on Liberty City's airwaves.

ACTIVITY

Tobias seems to always be at Gerry's beck and call for a night out on the town, as long as food or booze is involved. (24hrs)

Gerry will occasionally get a call from his father, asking that he take Packie & Katie out to do something, whether it's a mind expanding visit to one of the number of the city's museums, a few frames of bowling, or even just for ice cream. They may also call him on their own, asking for a lift.

Upon first meeting Laurie again, Gerry can date her in hopes of gaining her forgiveness, whether you can take her out dancing, fine dining, or even to Funland before it closes for the season.

AUTHOR'S NOTE

Legends of Purgatory is a deeply personal project I've been working on since 2021, and while this thread is brief right now, has a nearly complete outline, though actual gameplay interlaced with the narrative is the main thing that needs to be fleshed out, as well as my being entirely out of my element when it comes to weapons and vehicles. I meant to get something out Labor Day 2023. Then, Labor Day 2024. With the advent of new tools I've been privileged to test, I was finally motivated enough to get something together to post. It's 5am right now and I haven't slept yet. I'll definitely be editing this much further in the morning as well as adding more screenshots, and probably the rest of the radio & cast. Looks interesting. Love the design of Younger Gerry.

Very intrigued by the all-Dylan station in particular, would def want to see a larger selection for the other stations as I'm def a sucker for them.

Thank you so much!!!

I don't want to make Singing Moon ALL Dylan, but i'm debating making him the bulk of it, or like, half...

I had my tracklists for all of these stations wholly solidified, until i got apprehensive about it and i suddenly didn't, which is why you only see small tastes of the tracklists for the topic.

Leisure Radio may be more or less complete but i might change a *couple* songs as much as i love this playlist so much, personally

It used to be TLoP before it became LoP! I was really dead set on it until i was suddenly needing to say it out loud and make the logo you see up there.

Thank you!!! I think about them all the time. Gerry only ended up being the protagonist because I realized it was impossible for Packie to, when he actually has very little agency at this point.

Gotta add more of the cast bios to the topic, it's embarrassing i only had four but i was fighting sleep to get this out on the day i wanted to

Sorry for the double post. Just wanted to post some pictures of these models. (Open in a new tab for full size)

Here's 1997 Packie, back when I first "finished" him in February 2023. These are old pictures, I've color corrected his hands since, I'm only saying that because his weird yellow hands bother me here, but that's how they are on vanilla basegame IV Packie so I guess i shouldn't feel as bad.  He's also getting a new lower soon, the fact that he uses his basegame shoes and a reeeeally old edit i made of his jeans bothers me now.

Anybody who can figure out his upper drawable's referential origins gets a treat. (seriously)

Here's a turnaround of 1997 Gerry's head when I'd just finished his hair. I actually made it in 2023, but it sat untextured for nearly a full year before i went and gave it the photoscan treatment in August, then finally got the ball rolling on this thread.

Gerry1997.gif.648b162453de34e5bdd3f50e63b4a082.gif

The original plan was to do what I did for Tobias:

image.thumb.png.ab889df7b98d749e88db15e2973de603.png

Of course, I can't really look at this now. I painted this in Blender's super unstable texture painter with a mouse because I haven't had a drawing tablet since like... 2016. Toby will get the photoscan treatment eventually, that was always the plan. And a hairline with alpha.

image.thumb.png.dec054f7b4770fa88de236159782a587.png

Toby's Jacket is actually the origin of my redone Modo Ski Jacket.

Now here's Francis in his uniform, the old baby blues and the (at the time) brand new navy blues. He still needs something actually holstered, among other edits I have to do (precinct collar pins, shoulder straps, etc...) and I honestly think a lot of the stolen Max Payne 3 belt is butt-ugly. Like the tacky star. You're no cowboy!

babyblu.thumb.png.e9be54e5ca6a57dec63c8cd8b062f04e.pngnavyblu.thumb.png.7d04aaaa7e52e4cb87b4714d9e056280.png

I'm gonna do a proper police portrait for him in the former soon.

Now, Pa McReary is a model that, since I first made him, I've posted pictures of him before here and there on the forums. He's much closer to being finalized nowadays, though. i'm actually in the middle of giving him some alpha planes as a hair drawable. (See: Ilyena Faustin) I wanted to make it more like what you see on Roman or Mallorie initally, but it wasn't shaking out very well at all.

pa1.thumb.png.f558b3e3500e48527e40364033912837.pngpa2.thumb.png.c8f3b080711a705a158b470b5891dbda.png

I'd actually like opinions on how I should style the cast section of the topic, when I finalize these models, should I give everyone turnarounds like this?

Spoiler

FrancisNavyblues.gif.83b1954fe0d049d714fe514acd1a57b3.gif

Or just a square portrait of their A-poses in Blender from the chest up?

I might not end up doing either and just do screenshots for everyone instead, specifically posed portraits or like, real "moments"? I'm going to try restyling Kate and/or Ma today.

Will it be possible to bring them along for police chases and then bail out of the car as it plunges into a river with them still in it? Just asking cuz yknow gta things

fr tho this is a nice concept. I usually don’t got much nice to say about liberty city things cuz if you throw a rock you’ll hit twenty of them but this one tickles me in the right way

This here... it's about what I have been fantasizing for a long time: Gerry as a playable character, and with the McReary clan on the spotlight. I know that Roman, Little Jacob or Brucie have been far more popular choices but my "pick-of-the-litter" amongst Niko's closest confidantes was always Packie. So this Legends of Purgatory here immediately steals my attention.

What I am more interested about all of this is obviously... Mr. McReary. We've had different takes on that particular person of interest: be it with @Akaviri and the retired veteran @The Coconut Kid's Liberty City 1978. Or @The Nefarious' Mob Rules. One a man stuck in psychotic cynicism, nihilism and misanthropy... the other, a man enslaved to chase after personal vices and demons. Well, of course, this would be a "hit-and-miss" but that's what I took them for anyway. In your case, I will be awaiting to see what your Mr. "Colin" McReary will be about.

Plus, you've done a great job with your models - particularly the young Gerald and Packie.

You definitely could. Doesn't mean you should. (But it would be funny.) Thanks Uni, it means a lot, with your high standards ;)

I've been totally isolated from the concept creator's lounge, i honestly didn't think I'd be the first to come up with something like this. And Colin will get his fleshed out spotlight soon, I've been ruminating on him as a character for several years now.

And thank you! Packie's definitely my favorite but Gerry took a long time to come together compared to everybody else. Dressing him has been a challenge, mostly because of my personal gripe with needing to make him playerped sized for gameplay, but I've figured out on a technical level how to go between his canon height and in-game size.

Here's a preview of Kate, who I recently started redressing, as her old outfit just wasn't working for me from the beginning.

Meant to get an update to the thread out a while ago, but I've been a bit absorbed with the restoration of Leroy's Barbershop with the help of the likes of @Scott1, @Cowboy69, and assaultkifle47. Any progression of our understanding of MLOs is pretty important to the state of IV Modding, and of course, will be needed regardless for LOP with all the planned interiors. So far it only has its light fixtures and three chairs in, I won't be adding props until I have everything modeled out, (seating, reception, sinks & the vanity counter in front of a wall-wide mirror instead of individual ones, re: mirror limitations)

Back to actual Legends of Purgatory, here's your first update in some time:

I'm finally started to work on new models I've needed to make for the past eternity, starting with Laurie, as she appears in 1997.

This hair I'm using for now is a test hair, whose basis you absolutely wouldn't believe, I'm going to have to model something far closer to what I had in mind myself. But this is a UV test for what I'll potentially be using as a texture, using Margot's hair texture as a basis like I always do, platinum blonde with dark roots.  Her sweater (of which can be found on one of the placeholder pedestrians in a picture you can find in the vanilla McReary living room and Adriana's apartment) is used in reference of having the lingering thought of her being either be a distant McReary cousin or Gerry's wife.

Do you have any idea who she looks like? Because she really reminds me of Amanda Tapping but I swear she looks like somebody else.

Here's some fun development screenshots if you want to see how the sausage is made:

A belated Happy New Year.

I'm going to be completely transparent here. I desperately want to keep being productive. I mean, I have been! (New screenshots soon!) But little has materialized into anything that can actually get in-game right now. It's just difficult, with the state of tools for IV, and them being locked to a version of 3DS Max that is completely legally inaccessible. You might say, "but hey, there's that guy in the GIMS IV thread who patched it for later versions of max!" This is true. But GIMS IV for those later versions of Max are only as functional as any other version beyond 2012.

Badly.

Every export out of 3DS Max with GIMS IV or OFIO, if not in Max 2011 or 2012, results in inexcusable mesh normals and inexplicable sharps. And on the flip side, Max 2011/2012 is not infallible, because GIMS IV and OFIO are not infallible.

Here's an issue that's repeatedly come up lately in my recent exports, using my typical, unchanged FBX>Max workflow. Inexplicably, there's a chance every time i export an FBX, that no autodesk program of any kind can parse its UV, and when exported, itll just unwrap it, projecting it from above, which looks like this:

Spoiler

image.png.cf35afc6cf46d837fb132a3c64555752.pngimage.png.3ad7ce206d75de6b41e86c671a95a6f5.png

The only successful thing about this export was Laurie's face being left unscathed. This is actually incredibly lucky. Because nearly all my in-game models, with completely normalized faces, come out with some kind of distortion with their lips and eyebrows. See the topology as displayed with edges in OpenIV. (No diffuse textures, using Vertex Color for clarity.)

Spoiler

Here's a clearer example to give you an idea, side by side, how it's *supposed* to look, vs. how GIMS IV butchered it.

Now, Blender tools would fix most of this. Not only because these presumably be actively developed instead of be 10+ year old Max plugins by authors who have long since either moved on to V or left modding entirely, but i wouldn't need a person to with Max to export these for me. But where are these Blender tools? I'll tell you!

A COMPLETE LIST OF BLENDER TOOLS FOR GRAND THEFT AUTO IV:

utopiadeferred of RevIVe has been working on IV tools for some time now. I helped test (and continue to use) his Static WDR I/O (Blender 3.6.5 LTS) for the past several months. Everything that exists of my Leroy's Barbershop MLO, and nearly all of my LOP screenshots, are because of this addon. Instead of using OpenFormats, it comes with a program to decompile raw WDRs to .zip files you import into blender, though currently all exports are out to OpenFormats.

clueless currently has the most robust of tools right now, OpenFormats I/O (Blender 4.2 LTS) which imports the essentials, ODRs, ODDs, OFTs as well as .mesh and .light files. However, currently, only supports exporting of .light files. You can currently find this addon in DayL's discord server. He has plans to backport this addon to older blender versions when it's finished! (even 2.7x for you stubborn Blender oldheads/people on the truly lowest end of PCs)

Jaapio has been working on Blender I/O (Blender 4.3) for some time. Here's his racing map, complete with Suzannes cheering you on. Currently, his addon exports entire replacement maps, static WDRs, basic navmeshes, and from what I hear, train tracks and water placement??? Like utopia's, it also uses its own program to export the raw formats to an intermediate one for blender importing. I currently know of no public place to acquire this one. I don't even think I can run 4.3 on the machine i actually work on, unfortunately. Will add a link someone gives me one.

With the impending release of Vice City Next Gen on the 25th, there's rumor and speculation of the Revolution Team having their own full-fledged Blender Tools that may or may not release. Let me stress that I don't know anything about this. Just what I've heard. If so, God I HOPE it's for 2.8+ for peak accessibility for the community. Or even 3.0+. Running 4.0+ has only been scary and slow for me.

BONUS! Here's some more addons.

Cowboy69 has COMPLETE CameraOnim I/O for Blender (unsure of what version) so you can import and export any cutscene camera onim. I still have to try this one!

Swoorup made Paths Visualizer ten entire years ago. Imports and exports paths for 3D era... and only imports IV paths. And, it's locked to Blender 2.7something. That's what was the latest at the time!

spicybung made BlenDR, for Static WDR I/O. Unknown Blender Version. Somebody alerted me to this one in the IV Modding discord. It imported random polygons for me in 2.90, same behavior in 3.6 and 4.2. Nobody I know has gotten this to work. Good luck if you try this.

scurest started making this OAD/Onim Importer for Blender (Works on 2.90!!!) when I attempted to commission him through fiverr for this. He concluded that he couldn't finish it, couldn't figure out what was going on with the IK I presume. This also imports the root animation twice, once on the root bone and again on the entire armature object, which leads to the bulk of all these issues. Imports cutscene animations (after removing all the blendshape bone ids from the animations manually) but will stop after a seemingly random amount of frames. This is the only thing that imports facial animations at all, something OFIO can't do. This is the one I use personally because it works in my main Blender version i have done practically all of my work for IV in, and after manually fixing animations, I use this to test movement for clothes I make for Niko!

So, yeah. No WDD I/O right now, which is unfortunate, because I've been working on IG Models, and these would be the only thing or LOP that will actually be releasable for some time.

this is really cool but PLEASE PLEASE MAKE PACKIE A PUNK THAT POOR BOYS HAIR

Packie is living at home and his father is still alive. He couldn't cut and dye that hair if he wanted. C'mon.

Speaking of hair, expensive shaders layering issues suck.

Dithering with proper layering is ten thousand times better than janky sh*tty layering.

New post for the thread soon.

Been following this for some time now and I can't possibly express how excited I am for.. well everything about this!
I just wanted to ask, would Gerry's playerped be compatible if I were to (hypothetically) replace Niko's playerped with him? (Once it's complete of course!)

I know it's almost sacrilegious to replace our favorite Serbian protagonist but I'm just interested how he would look in cutscenes, facial rigging and all that.

Actually... Yes!

While i don't have any real progress to show right now, (been super depressed lately and i have a small backlog of commissions to finish, but on the bright side, i have a drawing tablet again for the first time in almost 9 years...) I want to talk about playerped Gerry!

I was actually going through so much grief for over a YEAR about the logistics of playerped Gerry, there was probably no feasible way to have him actual size in gameplay, no way to overwrite all of the player's typical animations with fixed ones with Gerry's height... So I had to made Gerry typical playerped size. UUGGGHHHH... and I procrastinated doing this for ages! Until one day i just sat down and decided, okay, i'm just gonna have to deal with it, I'm going to have a really messed up looking, disproportionate player Gerry, but that's just how it's gonna be... until...

image.png.48b04f4ab21b1e69e3f4e604c9b4df17.png

BEHOLD! NIKO BELLIC, 10% LARGER!

image.thumb.png.25a01717baeb80932b10ac9b5edf423d.png

Almost 1:1 proportionally. Meaning, Gerrry, 10% smaller... is our perfect playerped.

And here we have Niko 10% larger, Gerry 10% smaller. Isn't this just so messed up looking?

image.thumb.png.9234f17919b24271bc7b5605c289c133.png

So presumably when i get around to cutscene tests, all i'll have to do is animate a version of Gerry that's already scaled up 10%, and then put the animation of playerped Gerry, with a 10% size transform already applied.

The only issue that exists right now is the fact that Gerry's face and facial skeleton is obviously not 1:1 with Niko's. See, a lot of the facial bones are pretty okay if they're a little bit off. but the only bones where being just the smallest bit off pose a big issue... is the eyeballs.

Thankfully it's not too noticeable in game? To anyone that hasn't spent dozens of hours looking at and working on things for young playerped Gerry, at least. But it's noticable to me. So you'd think, well, you can change the skeleton, right?

Well yeah, but.... No. The nature of hi_facials, the facials that all cutscene models and player peds use, is that the animations won't retarget seamlessly onto a new skeleton. Like say, all those funny cutscene model swaps you see for GTA V. Everything perfectly animates on a different character! Not the case for IV. Instead... Every single bone on the skeleton *snaps* to the exact positions of every bone on the skeleton that the animation was *made* for. You can see this in action by swapping out your playerped Niko with playerped Johnny or Luis. That's what that looks like.

If anyone has any input on any Gerry outfits they want to see, that would be awesome, because my to-do list for the next few days after commissions is to finally get the rest of the 1997 McReary family in-game!

I also have a comprehensive list of weapons to work on (all thanks to GQComms, really, i don't know my own ass from a tit when it comes to weapons...) So i do have a clear path to follow in terms of further development, at the very least!

As for how Gerry works in Niko's cutscenes? Well... See for yourself!

INTO THE GERRYVERSE!!!

Or, um, Grand Theft Auto IV Channel Chasers?

Thank you for such a quick response!

Gerry does look quite interesting next to older Gerry, like you said some really weird marvel-ish universe stuff :pp

I do hope you feel better soon. I know how depression can take a big toll on anyone and I wish you the best, in modding and just general life! ^^
