AlexandriaAT2001
This is the new thread for posting your concept radio stations. Whether you have multiple radio stations for your concept, or one... Whether you're making a concept with a storyline, characters, etc. or you just want to make some fictional GTA-style radio stations... Whether you're making a new radio station or giving an already existing GTA station a new playlist... this topic is for you! Rules for this thread: 1. Don't hide links in link text. There was an issue with the old thread, where a site update unhid every YouTube link, displaying each and every video seperately, outside the yellow text. This made about every page of the thread take a very long time to load, rendering it unreadable. So don't put links in text and don't put more than four videos in one post. Typing out a list without linking to each video for each and every song is a time saver anyway. It's a good idea to make a YouTube, Spotify, etc. playlist for your radio station instead of embedding a video for each and every song on it. Of course, you can link multiple playlists in a single post. 2. Give constructive criticism and don't confuse subjectivity with objectivity. Don't tell anyone their radio stations are terrible without elaborating. Critique the idea, not whether or not you personally like it. You happening to personally dislike a song or artist someone used, or a genre someone's station is based on, or a logo someone created, does not mean they have to agree with you. 3. Don't use songs that have already appeared in a GTA game. Songs are never used twice across the series, with the exception being songs removed due to licensing issues. If you use a song that ends up in a new GTA game or Online update afterwards, you don't need to remove it so long as you prove you put it in your concept before it was used in the actual GTA in question. 4. Don't be condescending. It's okay if people know less than you, are unaware of something, or decide to ask something unclear that doesn't make sense. Nobody has to do the opposite for you. They will do so themselves and talking down to them/thinking you're better than them won't fix anything. Especially don't be condescending towards others for things they can't change, such as their subjective interests. 5. Don't be entitled. It's okay if people don't agree with you. It's okay if someone makes a station you don't like. It's okay if someone uses the same songs and artists you used. 6. Stay on topic. Don't discuss anything other than concept radio stations and how the ways Rockstar curates their radio stations relates to concept stations. 7. Don't use more than 109 songs on a single radio station. For the Cayo Perico Heist, a Dance station with 109 songs was added to GTA V Online. That is the highest number of songs on a single radio station in the GTA series. While we don't know if any radio stations will have a higher number of songs in the future, we know that as of the Cayo Perico Heist, the maximum number of songs for each radio station is 109. If you fail to follow these rules, you'll be banned from the topic. Have fun! I've written this guide to help with GTA-style soundtrack curation. It will teach you how to create GTA-style soundtracks and give you tips on how to avoid making the mistakes Rockstar has made (they aren't terrible misakes, but anyway...) This isn't a list of rules for posting in this thread, so you don't need to follow it in order to post here, but it's a helpful guide: Spoiler How to curate a GTA-style soundtrack Rockstar has always used music to add to the experience of their games. Especially GTA. We've all tuned into the radio and heard at least one song that fit the atmosphere and setting of the game very well. That's because Rockstar curates their soundtracks based on those things, also keeping in mind the time period the game is set in. In GTA 3, the soundtrack was made up of spoofs of the popular music of the time (Y2K Pop,) licensed Underground Hip Hop tracks, and classical music. This was very early on in the series, right before Rockstar got their curation game going. In GTA Vice City, the soundtrack was filled with licensed music. Including some well-known songs. This is when their curation game began. Of course, Vice City was a period piece. GTA IV had the first mostly licensed modern-set GTA soundtrack, with a good amount of radio stations to listen to. But what's the formula? What makes GTA soundtracks the way they have been since Vice City (for period pieces) and IV: The Complete Edition (for modern-set games)? For modern-set concepts: Focus on songs that fit the setting location Rockstar chooses songs that fit the vibe of the area their games are set. While developing GTA IV, Rockstar employees were made to watch videos from New York City while developing the game, which had to have helped in soundtrack curation. The biggest thing they did was discuss every song considered potentially fitting for the game. They drove across the map, playing each song they had in mind. If it fit NYC… if it made you feel like you were in NYC… it was included in the soundtrack. New York City has a dark, gritty vibe, fitting most for hard Rock genres, R&B, etc. Miami has a bright, upbeat, and tropical vibe, fitting for Latin Pop, Tropical House, etc. Keep in mind many songs will fit more than one area (Tropical Pop is tropical and chill, so it fits a city located in a tropical climate as well as a city with a laid-back vibe located in any other climate. Latin Pop is a good example: There’s Latin influence in many areas. Where is your concept set? Watch YouTube videos of people walking or driving around in the area, watch TV shows or movies set in the area, or even check out social media live streams where people are visiting the area in real-time. Play music on a different device, in a different tab if you're able to, or in your head, while watching the videos or streams. You'll know what fits and what doesn't. There's just this feeling… you know what the area's vibe feels like and what songs fit. Focus on recent songs If your concept is set in the current year, you need to represent the current era with plenty of songs from at least the past four years, with at least some emphasis on the current year. Rockstar slipped up on this with GTA V, as a matter of fact. Most of the songs on the game came out in the 1970s and 1980s, and while there are more songs from the early 2010s than the 1990s and 2000s, there are far from as many songs from the early 2010s as there are from the 70s and 80s. There are around 160 songs from the early 10s, and around 220 songs from prior. It would've made more sense to at least balance the ratio of early 10s music to music from prior, rather than have the majority of the songs be from prior. Non-Stop-Pop FM plays two hit songs from V's setting year, 2013, but three from 2007 and 2000. There should be at least four songs from 2013 on the station, so that year can be given the most representation. I understand there's a bunch of music to include from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s… but a modern setting should have an emphasis on the current era. There's always a Disco station, a Funk station, etc. but they aren't absolutely necessary in a concept set after the peak of 70s nostalgia in the 2000s (unless the setting location or storyline calls for it.) Focus on second or third-biggest hits When curating any radio station that plays big hits, focus on the small and medium-sized hits for the most part. It's very likely most of the reason Rockstar does this is due to budget restraints, but at this point, it's become their style. When including music from any popular artist, go for their second or third biggest hit, or go for the second or third biggest hit from one of their albums or EPs. You can include one or two mega-hits, as Rockstar has done so themselves (“Billie Jean” by Michael Jackson and “Moves Like Jagger” by Maroon 5.) Definitely also go for one-hit wonders and artists who've never had a big hit. Skim the bottom half of the biggest chart in the country your concept is set, along with the biggest chart in the country most adjacent to the country your concept is set, for the smaller songs and artists. Their biggest hits are fair game, since they weren't big or mega-sized hits. NOTE: Pop radio stations might seem tricky, so here's the trick. For this example, I'll be listing every hit song from 2000 and beyond that plays on V's Non-Stop-Pop FM. I'll be considering the cut songs as well, to put Rockstar's full vision into consideration (note that these songs were cut due to the failure of obtaining a license, not because the songs didn't fit.) 2000: “Pure Shores” and “Lady (Hear Me Tonight)” were big hits in the UK. “Kids” and “The Time Is Now” were medium-sized hits in the UK. 2001: “Days Go By” was a medium sized hit in the US and UK. “Starlight” was cut from the initial release, but it was a big hit in the UK. 2002: Nothing. 2003: “Scandalous” was a medium-sized hit in the UK. 2004: Nothing. 2005: “Feel Good Inc.” was a big hit in the UK. “1 Thing” was a medium-sized hit in the US and UK. 2006: “Me & U” was a medium-sized hit in the US and UK. 2007: “Glamorous” was a big hit in the US. “With Every Heartbeat” was a big hit in the UK. “Gimme More” was a medium-sized hit in the US. “The Way I Are” was cut, but it was a big hit in the US. Rockstar is perfectly fine with including multiple big hits from one year. 2008: “Work (Freemasons remix)” was a big hit in the UK. Although cut, “American Boy” was a big hit in the UK and a medium-sized hit in the US. “Let It Rock” was cut as well, but it was a medium-sized hit in the US and UK. 2009: “Meet Me Halfway” was a medium sized hit in the US and a big hit in the UK. 2010: “Only Girl (In The World)” was a big hit in the US and UK. “Cooler Than Me” was a medium-sized hit in the US and UK. “Animal” was cut, but it was a medium-sized hit in the US. 2011: “Moves Like Jagger” was a mega-hit in the US and UK. “Midnight City” was a hit with people on the internet, but morso around the time of GTA V's release. “You Make Me Feel…” was cut, but it was a medium-sized hit in the US and a small hit in the UK. “Moves Like Jagger” is one of the few mega-hits featured in the GTA series. Since "Night Moves” is also on GTA V's soundtrack, and “Physical” by Olivia Newton-John was considered for GTA V's soundtrack, there can be multiple mega-hits in one game. At least three. 2012: “Bad Girls” was a non-hit in the US and UK, but trended on YouTube for a bit. No other 2012 hits… no actual 2012 hits, actually… That must be because of all the big hits they chose from 2005-11, as well as their budget. 2013: “Applause” was a medium-sized hit in the US and UK. “Tennis Court” was a non-hit in the US and UK, and likely only chosen due to the breakout popularity of Lorde. No other 2013 hits… odd for a game set in 2013… budget, yes, but why spend so much of it on 2000 and 2007 when your game is set in the early 2010s? Moderate-sized US hits and big UK hits are most common, with only 1-year gaps every few years (going by when the songs were hits, rather than the years they were released,) 1-3 songs that were hits within one year is the norm for songs per-year (it doesn't matter if you use up to 4. If your Pop station covers less than 25 years, you can get away with 6. 8, if less than 15. 10, if less than 5. Whatever you do, add an extra 1 or 2 songs from the year your concept is set.) Big US hits from the same year may accompany them. Non-hits/second-third singles are the second-most common, occurring with songs from 2000 and “Tennis Court” from 2013. Big US hits are the third-most common, with one every few years. On one occasion, two big US hits can be songs that were popular the same year, as seen with the songs from 2007 Rockstar planned for the station. Non-hits are the fourth-most common, being used as long as they really fit the atmosphere of the game and are too mainstream for an underground music station. Mega-hits are the fifth-most common, with only one being played on the station. Again, if you're doing a concept set outside the US or UK, the same formula applies. Just replace “US” and/or “UK” with whatever country your concept is set in and whatever country is considered adjacent. If you wish to be more realistic, focus only on songs that were hits in the area your concept is set. Non-Stop-Pop FM is a Los Santos-based station, but half of the songs on there were never hits in real-life Los Angeles. Also for realism, don't have the DJ talk as if a station is based out of a country your concept isn't set in. Anyway, another thing to point out for the main point is that you need to stay away from obvious super iconic hits. “Take On Me” and “Don't Stop Believin’” weren't in GTA Vice City, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Jump Around” weren't in GTA San Andreas, “Bad Day” and “Low” weren't in GTA IV, etc. All of this applies to any other genre as well, except mega-hits are less likely to be used (the only non-Pop mega-hit in the GTA series is “Night Moves”.) In the case of classic stations, more big hits are used, compared to modern stations. Stations mixing classic and modern seem to follow the modern station formula. Pop stations are the exception, due to how mainstream and accessible Pop is. For underground stations, it's self explanatory. Look up some unknown artists who were born in the area your concept is set and choose a song or two from their discographies. Emphasize local artists and local genres Put emphasis on artists who were born in the area your concept is set in. Rockstar put quite a bit of Kendrick Lamar on Radio Los Santos in GTA V for being set in Southern California, a bunch of Brooklyn artists on Radio Broker in GTA IV for being set in New York City, etc. Also put emphasis on genres that were invented in the area, if any, by giving them their own stations or mixes (for example, a 90s Grunge station in a Seattle-based concept or a UK Drill station in a London-based concept.) You can even consider genres that are popular in the area (for example, House is huge in London, Miami, Toronto, etc.) or genres iconic to the area (like 90s West Coast Hip Hop is in Los Angeles.) Consider the storyline If you're working on a storyline for your concept, you can choose songs with lyrics that fit the characters and events in the story. You can even create a list of songs that play at certain points throughout the story. Represent genres and eras well Include at least one song from each era and subgenre the station plays music from. For example, Non-Stop-Pop FM in GTA V plays Pop music from the 80s, 90s, 00s, and early 10s, but it doesn't just play random songs from those periods. It plays at least one song from each main era of those periods. Synth Pop (“Tell It To My Heart”,) Eurodance (“Rhythm of the Night”,) Teen Pop (“I Want It That Way”,) Nu-Disco (“Lady (Hear Me Tonight)”,) Trance-Pop (“Days Go By”,) Indie Pop (“Feel Good Inc.”,) Europop (“Only Girl (In The World)”,) and Electro Pop (“Applause”,) to give a few examples. Of course, Non-Stop-Pop doesn't play 80s Power Pop or 10s Progressive House, but that may be a result of Rockstar having had some trouble deciding what type of Pop station Non-Stop-Pop should've been. If you're curating a station, but want to give it one subgenre, go ahead… if it's the point of the station. If the station is based on an entire decade, represent each and every popular subgenre of that decade. You can make an 80s Synth Pop station, but don't restrict an 80s Pop station to Synth Pop. There's New Wave, Pop Rock, Power Pop, etc. EDM might seem confusing, since there are plenty of different styles of varying sounds, vibes, and BPM. Either stick to one subgenre (like Electro-Choc does with Electro House) or stick to one style (for example, an upbeat House station with a mix for Progressive House, a mix for Bigroom, a mix for Bass House, and a mix for Tech House.) You don't need to cover too many time periods on one station The fault of Non-Stop-Pop FM was that it felt like Rockstar didn't know if they wanted it to be an 80s Pop station or a late 00s/early 10s Dance/bubblegum Pop station, then they chose to put both together and throw in some 90s and 00s stuff. It's best to focus on less than four time periods. A station focusing on 70s and 80s Rock works, a station focusing on 00s Pop Punk works, a station focusing on 00s to 20s Pop works. Non-Stop-Pop would've worked better as a 90s-early 10s Pop station, with 80s Pop having its own station. That way, smaller eras of Pop could've been represented (Early 10s Dubstep-infused Pop, for example.) You can cover four or more time periods if you want to, but it's not necessary. Don't worry about length GTA Vice City's radio stations had an average of 15-16 songs. GTA V's radio stations have an average of 20-30 songs. Non-Stop-Pop FM has 42 songs covering each main Pop era from the 80s to the early 10s (and would've had at least 53 songs, had none been cut from the game's initial release,) and EDM stations with multiple mixes are inherently long: LSUR has around 60 songs, and Music Locker Radio has around 100. If GTA VI has a soundtrack two times bigger than V's, including another Pop station playing stuff from each Pop era of the past 30-35 years, said Pop station would start with around 40 songs and finish with around 80. If no songs are cut, it would start with around 50-60 and finish with around 100-120 (crazy, I know.) It doesn't matter how many songs there are on any given station. All that matters is the era(s) and subgenre(s) the stations claim to play are played and represented. A station can have 100 songs, or 10. It doesn't matter. If you feel like a station's playlist is getting too long for the page you're posting it on, hide it in a spoiler. Of course, the current maximum is 110, but that's plenty anyway. Don't worry about the amount of stations you create in any one concept GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas had around 10 radio stations. GTA V initially had 17, then Online brought that number up to 22. Don't use more than four songs from any one artist Rockstar doesn't normally include more than 3-4 songs from any one artist, unless the artist has their own mix on a station (for example, each DJ on LSUR in GTA V,) or an entire station dedicated to them (for example, Bob Marley on Tuff Gong in GTA IV.) Non-Stop-Pop FM in GTA V seems to refuse to include more than one song from any artist, unless they have a discography as a soloist and one as a band member (Fergie is on Non-Stop-Pop once as a solo artist and once as part of the Black Eyed Peas.) This may not be a rule we can assume exists, as this has only happened once so far, but it's so far what Rockstar is doing with Pop stations that play music from more than one decade. NOTE: It's also rare an artist appears on more than one station in an individual game. It happened with Michael Jackson in GTA Vice City, Kardinal Offishall in GTA IV The Complete Edition, Jamiroquai in GTA V/V Online… It depends on what stations you have. For example, I'm making a station centered around Gen Z artists. A few of the artists on the station are also featured on one or two other stations. They're featured on the Gen Z one, due to being Gen Z. If you do a station like this, where you're commentating on something (in my case, a single generation,) you can get away with having an artist appear on up to three different stations. Consider the present As technology develops, there are new ways to listen to music. Internet-based radio stations were introduced in GTA Online over the past seven years. Blonded Los Santos in 2017, iFruit Radio in 2019, and Motomami in 2021. Feel free to create internet radio-style stations, as those are still very much a thing. One thing Rockstar hasn't done is give the player the option to create a playlist out of in-game songs to listen to on foot or in a vehicle. If you want your concept to be more immersive, include a Spotify/Apple Music-style streaming service that lets you create a playlist from in-game music. You can even have multiple pre-made genre and decade playlists made up of in-game music (just list the names of the playlists if you don't want to re-type song info.) (You can even include a note about a spoof AI DJ who judges you based on your taste in music, as your take on Spotify's AI DJ.) Balance the representation of genres You could make up to three Hip Hop stations, so long as they each play music from different time periods or underground artists. One for modern Hip Hop, one for classic Hip Hop, and one for modern underground Hip Hop or another classic Hip Hop station, depending on the setting (you could do both and have four Hip Hop stations. Again, it depends on the setting.) You could make three Pop stations. One that plays recent/modern Pop, one that plays throwback Pop, and one that plays Oldies Pop or another throwback Pop station (at this point in time, it's fair to do seperate stations for 80s and 90s Pop, or 80s and Y2K-era Pop, if you wish to. Depending on the setting, you could do five Pop stations. If that seems like too much, you could forget the Oldies Pop, or just do an Oldies station that isn't exclusive to Pop.) For Rock, you could have one modern Rock station, two throwback Rock stations (some combinations of 70s/80s/90s/00s Rock,) and one other (maybe Punk? Oldies Rock? 00s Pop Punk? Metal? a seperate station for Indie Rock?) This opens the door for five Rock stations, depending on the setting.) For every other genre, there's usually only 1-2 stations for each. Sometimes one for modern songs and one for classics. Sometimes only one station and it plays modern songs or classics. Use recurring genres and artists Rockstar usually goes with the following genre selection: Modern Hip Hop (Game FM, Wildstyle, Radio Los Santos, Playback FM, The Beat 102.7, Radio Los Santos again) Classic Hip Hop (The Classics, West Coast Classics) Pop (Lips 106, Flash FM, Non-Stop-Pop FM) Throwback Pop (Flashback FM, Vice City FM) Modern Rock (V-Rock, Radio X, Radio Broker, Vinewood Boulevard Radio) Throwback Rock (K-DST, Liberty Rock Radio, Radio Los Santos) Dance (Rise FM, SFUR, Electro-Choc, Vladivostok FM's second mix, Deadmau5, Soulwax FM, LSUR, The Music Locker) R&B/Soul (CSR, The Vibe 98.8, The Lowdown) Latin (Radio Espantoso, San Juan Sounds, East Los FM) Reggae/Dancehall (K-Jah, K-Jah West, Tuff Gong Radio, RamJam FM, The Blue Ark) Disco/Funk (Fever 105, Bounce FM, K109 The Studio, IF99, Space) GTA IV and V both used this entire selection alongside their unique stations, and it can be expected to be used again in GTA VI, alongside its own unique stations (Synthwave? Classic Latin?) Unique stations are decided based on the genres born in/iconic to a game's setting location (Channel X in GTA V, for being set in a spoof of Southern California) and characters (Vladivostok FM's first mix for Niko Bellic in GTA IV.) As for artists, it's common for there to be a song by Hall & Oates (“Out of Touch” in GTA Vice City, “Maneater” in GTA IV, and “Adult Education” in GTA V) and Phil Collins (“In The Air (Tonight)”, “Easy Lover”, and “Turn It on Again” (Genesis) in GTA Vice City Stories, “Mama” (Genesis) in GTA IV, and “I Don't Care Anymore” in GTA V.) It's common for the origin song of a popular sample-led song to be featured, and this happens especially with recent popular sample-led songs. “The Edge” by David McCallum (sampled in “The Next Episode” by Dr. Dre) in GTA IV, “Footsteps In The Dark” by The Isley Brothers (sampled in “Today Was A Good Day” by Ice Cube) “Woman to Woman” by Joe Cocker and “Dance Floor” by Zapp (both sampled/interpolated in “California Love” by 2Pac) in GTA San Andreas. Use memorable songs Each GTA soundtrack has at least one memorable song. GTA 3 had “Push It To The Limit”, GTA Vice City had “Japanese Boy”, GTA IV had “Schwein”, TBOGT had “Kid Conga”, and GTA V has “Midnight City”. Whether it's a quirky song with a catchy hook, a joke song, or a casual song that happens to stand-out, it will be a good inclusion. Another type of memorable is familiar. Hit songs are memorable for being familiar, because the human brain is drawn to familiarity. Make stations for currently popular genres GTA IV had an Electro House station, because Electro House was the mainstream EDM subgenre of the time the game was developed and released. GTA 3 had a Trance station, along with a DnB station, as both genres were big at the time the game was developed and released. Rockstar made the mistake of not having any Festival Progressive House, Dubstep or boom-clap-hey! Indie on GTA V, despite those genres being big at the time the game was developed and released. GTA VI can make up for that by having Tech House, melodic Deep House, DnB revival, Afro House, Afrobeat, Jersey Club, and Phonk.) That's it for modern-set concepts. What about period piece concepts? The formula is about the same. There are only a few differences. - Focus mainly on songs from the setting year and the previous four years - You can choose more big hits, but only one mega-hit - Make stations that cover the popular genres of the time A concept set in the mid-2000s should have stations for Pop Punk and Electro House, for example. A concept set in the late-2010s should have stations for Future Bass, Tropical House, and Soundcloud Trap, for example. A concept set in the mid-80s should have stations for New Wave, Glam Rock, Electro Hip Hop, for example… and so on. Popular genres from previous time periods are allowed (GTA San Andreas, for example, is set in 1992 and has a 70s Disco station,) but not needed. Decades have a culture of nostalgia for certain previous decades. For example, 80s nostalgia was big in at least the 2010s. A period piece concept set in the 2010s could definitely have 80s Pop, 80s Rock, etc. on its radio. 90s nostalgia was also somewhat a thing that decade, so some 90s songs wouldn't be out of place either. You could instead speculate on which stations would exist in the year your concept is set, instead of focusing exclusively on stations that represent the popular music/aesthetics of the time. - Emphasize the time the concept is set The Pop, Hip Hop (if any,) R&B, Rock, Alternative (if any,) and Dance (if any) stations should reflect the time period your concept is set in. A Pop station in a mid-1980s concept would play Synth Pop, Power Pop, Pop Rock, etc. A Hip Hop station in an early-2000s concept would play Glam Rap, Bling Rap, and Pop Rap. A Dance station in a mid-2010s concept would play Bigroom and Future House (Tropical House was big too, but would either get its own station or be played on a Pop station,) etc. Meditating on the past, present and future This point is just for meditating on the changing times and the fact time flies fast. In the 2000s, it made sense for there to be an Oldies Pop station (Rockstar never did one back then, but it would've made sense for there to have been one,) alongside an 80s throwback Pop station and a 90s-at the time present Pop station. 80s nostalgia was taking shape and the 90s were only the previous decade. In the 2010s, Oldies Pop made more sense as a thing you'd do depending on the setting location/time, due to how old it became. 80s and 90s Pop could have their own stations and 00s-at the time present Pop on its own felt normal. In the 2020s, 80s and 90s Pop can still be seperate, but the Y2K-era is the new throwback style and the core 2000s have started to be rehashed as well. It's time to consider 00s-only Pop stations. With that, depending on the setting, you can do seperate stations for 80s Pop, 90s Pop, Y2K Pop, and 00s-today Pop. It's okay to put 80s and 90s Pop on the same station though, as Rockstar has done before (but with more decades than those two.) You don't even need to include 90s Pop in your concept if you don't have room/time for it and it's the last thing that's relevant to the concept. There was no 90s Pop station in GTA IV... If you want to, pull a Non-Stop-Pop FM and make one big Pop station that covers the 80s to today (or the 90s to today, since Non-Stop-Pop covered just over 30 years.) In the 2030s, 00s nostalgia will peak and 10s nostalgia will go mainstream. At that point, you may have three options. 1: Making stations for 80s/90s Pop, 00s/10s Pop, and 20s-present Pop, if you want to keep the amount of Pop stations to three. If you're okay with making four, and the nostalgia waves are all that big, then you'll have to give 00s Pop and 10s Pop their own separate stations. 2: Making a station for 80s/90s Pop, and one like Non-Stop-Pop that covers 3-4 decades. 3: Not even doing traditional radio stations. I doubt traditional radio stations will go defunct next decade, but if they did, the problem of too many Pop stations would be solved. There's something to satellite radio stations and playlists that allows you to seperate everything by decade and too much is barely a thing. Making satellite radio/Internet-based stations only could be a reasonable option. For Hip Hop, you might see something similar. The Rockstar style allows you to narrow down Hip Hop stations to coast and style. Golden-Age Hip Hop will always be 90s Hip Hop. 00s Hip Hop and 10s Hip Hop stations could be decided based on the area your concept is set. A throwback southern Hip Hop station is likely to have mid-90s - mid-00s tracks. Trap Rap, however, could have its own station and play tracks from the 10s and 20s. We'll see how Rockstar adapts to the times in GTA VI and VII, and even if they for some reason decide not to, you can still do it yourself. What else is there to do with music? - Specify the dance clubs in your concept and name the station that plays inside - List the places that feature live performances. What songs are covered? Are actual artists doing performances of their own songs in-game? - Choose your protagonist's favourite radio stations, songs, artists etc. Do they dedicate a certain song to anyone or anything? If so, feel free to mention it. You can also choose their least favourite songs, artists, radio stations, etc. - Choose trailer songs - Choose your concept's main and background theme music - Choose which songs or stations play in hotels, stores, malls, strip clubs, etc. - Choose the radio station that's always playing when the player gets into certain vehicles, such as taxis - Choose the hosts for each radio station - Choose songs for station IDs and choose whether or not the songs play in full on the station Afterall, Rockstar did put "Lonely Boy" by The Black Keys in a Vinewood Boulevard Radio station ID. Also, that one plucky pop melody used in a Non-Stop-Pop FM station ID sounds a lot like its from "Right Round" by Flo Rida feat. Kesha. - Choose the one song that always seems to be playing whenever you tune into one certain radio station ---------------------------------------------- NOTE: If the entire world is the setting for your concept, everything still applies. Localize each radio station to where it broadcasts from. We haven't gotten to visit another map in a context where we can freely explore it and save our game, but if that ever happened, I assume radio stations would be made for that location as well. NOTE 2: The difference between a big hit and a mega-hit are that big hits don't always reach #1 or stay at #1 for more than a couple weeks. There are usually a few other casual big hits competing with it. A mega-hit is a viral hit that spends multiple weeks at #1, is played at everyone's weddings, and is overall a cultural phenomenon unlikely to be forgotten. It's rare for two or more mega-hits to be initially popular/trending at the same time. NOTE 3: There's no such thing as songs that don't fit a crime game. If a song fits at least the atmosphere of the setting location, it fits the concept. Doesn't matter if it's Rihanna, the Backstreet Boys, ambient music, or Steve Aoki. For fun, I made playlists of songs that fit the atmospheres of Miami, New York City, and Chicago. These should be helpful in selecting atmosphere-fitting songs for your concept, say you're setting it in any of these cities. Apps like Spotify are good at recommending similar songs for your playlists, no matter how popular or unknown they are, so these playlists will help you create yours. These playlists aren't concept soundtracks themselves. They're selections of songs that fit the vibe of each city, based on videos of people driving around in them. There are a lot of well known songs, alongside lesser known ones. I will likely make playlists for Los Angeles and Toronto as well. Maybe London too. Miami/Vice City New York City/Liberty City Chicago/GTA 7? Los Angeles/Los Santos Spoiler I'm open to directly helping you curate your Pop, Hip Hop, EDM/Dance, and/or Indie Pop stations. Need some Canadian Pop at all? I'm your girl. PM me. For the Cayo Perico Heist, a Dance station with 109 songs was added to GTA V Online. That is the highest number of songs on a single radio station in the GTA series. While we don't know if any radio stations will have a higher number of songs in the future, we know that as of the Cayo Perico Heist, the maximum number of songs for each radio station is 109. this is honestly mad. cant even remember a single track that was on that. too many tracks isnt good in my opinion. It'll ensure radio stations can be as long as they need to be in order to serve their purpose. Non-Stop-Pop FM has 42 songs, but if it really did have one song for each era of Pop, it would reach around 60. We don't know how far Rockstar would've gone with that station, and it would've had 54 songs if none were cut. Of course, that station has 109 songs across four mixes, each one done by a different DJ. 79 is the highest number of songs on a station hosted by one person doing any number of mixes by themselves (Worldwide FM as of GTA Online.) 109 allows for the one or two stations that happen to be longer than the rest. Dance stations look to be doing that, as it makes more sense to have all the House DJ mixes on one station, rather than have a bunch of seperate House stations bring the total number of radio stations up too high. Hypothetical: Classic Dance: 1 mix for classic piano House, 1 mix for Eurodance, 1 mix for Trance Modern Dance: 1 mix for Tech House, 1 mix for Bass House, 1 mix for Deep House, 1 mix for Chill Deep House/Afro House Bass: 1 mix for Dubstep, 1 mix for Riddim, 1 mix for Trap, 1 mix for Melodic Dubstep/Future Bass Synthwave: Synthwave That would be 4 stations, but 12 if the mixes were separate. 109 is definitely a maximum. Agree to disagree. Its def cool to have more than 1 mix in a station but 4 2 hour set mixes is just gonna make the stations feel like a slog to go through. Would be fine if its dnb or any other high tempo/eclectic station like msx or flylo since theres always something interesting going on and tracks go by faster but music locker is mainly 120bpm deep/tech house and doesnt make for much interesting listening especially in the context of a gta game I do agree somewhat w the bottom bits however, that being said i do think too many cooks spoil the broth and that translates to a station not really having an identity of its own due to the station length and most players not being able to pick out any memorable tracks from each station, especially across continuous stations like music locker Edited July 24, 2024 by LowTierDude Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/998095-create-your-own-radio-station-for-gta-20-how-to-curate-a-gta-style-soundtrack/#findComment-1072412091 Share on other sites

The mixes on LSUR and The Music Locker are long so the dance clubs don't get boring fast, but memorable songs are important no matter how long a mix is. Jeansowaty
@LowTierDude I always look forward to your playlists because I know I'll have new stuff to listen to while driving lol, awesome stuff New sh*t from me as well: Location: Garystown, Upstate Liberty Game: Grand Theft Auto III (2001) Type: Semi-mixed, interrupted by in-lore commercials Genre: Tracker/Amiga music, techno, trance, house, eclectic electronica, chiptune Host: Clone Radio DJ, a very generic name for a DJ who oddly sounds like a text-to-speech algorhythm. The station is financed by the mysterious Clone's Corporation who operate in the Upstate area of 3D era's Liberty State, they also own the rights to the now defunct Kruton Computers and their relatives (which means they also now currently own the POKE 0FF radio station in San Fierro...). The station is also filled to the brim with the corporation's depressive slogans and commercials promoting human genetic experiments, the development of artificial companions and eventual decline of governments in favor of corporations.
