Why gta its so cool

Sometime ago i watch a video of Leslie benzies comments why gta make succeful, and his say: "For people do your fantasys", kill people, theaf cars, drive fast cars and others.

For you, why is the gta franchise succeful?

For me it would be a combination of theafing cars and the freedom to explore the map. There have been a lot of other franchises doing the same thing but so far GTA still is best in the sum of its parts for me, Mafia 3 is the only "gta clone" I enjoyed as much as a GTA game.
