The Reason Why Salvatore Betrayed Claude (Spoilers)

Recommended Posts

In GTA 3, Salvatore betrays Claude in his last request (get it? Hello?… I’ll show myself out), and thankfully, Maria saves Claude. But why did Salvatore betray Claude? Paranoia has too little detail, so why?

I think it goes back to 1992, San Andreas. CJ used to work for Leone (Freefall, Saint Mark’s Bistro) to take down the Forelli and a couple of hitmen, I think. The connection is even deeper because CJ worked for Joey, the son of Salvatore.

Here’s the thing. CJ could betray Leone by robbing Caligula’s. Key word: could. The mission is optional, but in my head canon, it’s canon. I mean, I’m not gonna decline 100k! That’s enough money to get to an Ivy League university! (Consider the money being 1992 dollars, it will be 220000 in 2024 money, I think).

CJ receives the phone call from a furious Salvatore about the betrayal. This could have been exactly why Salvatore betrayed Claude.

I haven’t played Liberty City Stories, so if events in that game could help and you could add them, please do.

I always thought it was a cool theory that Toni Cipriani killed CJ in ‘94 for robbing Caligula’s, then went into hiding for four years.

Sal even said he sent Toni after multiple loose ends of the Leone’s, not one made man.

Rockstar embracing the Florida Man meme with "Leonida Man" already checks off as a horror DLC for me.

I guess the Leones don’t trust THAT many high ranks since CJ. That’s kind of it. Think of it like 10 executive producers for one movie. Eventually, one guy is gonna wanna get the whole executive pie

Personally never thought this was plausible.

By 1992, CJ is one of the biggest figures in the West Coast and has ascended to become a multibillionaire. He has a stake in a casino, is a manager for a major rapper, runs auto businesses in San Fierro, is the most powerful man in Los Santos, owns an airfield, brought down a corrupt police officer, and has a damn pilot's license. He's not some random civvie but a huge player. CJ probably gets into influencing politicians, celebrities, directors, and businesspeople. The Leone family is a relative joke in Las Venturas and they sold off their casino assets, probably to some entertainment conglomerate.

It doesn't really make sense relative to the characters power. I think Salvatore begrudgingly moved on trying to preserve his assets out East.
