Why was 1440p popularized if 4K was out?

Because hardware has lagged well behind resolution, and very few systems even today can do 4K at over 60FPS with decent graphical settings in 2 year old titles.

You don't need to play at ultra settings. Also, DLSS with frame generation is a very nifty technology that works really well, in supported titles of course.

And when did frame generation become commonplace in games? Compare and contrast with when 1440p monitors became mainstream.

Frame gen is less than two years old and is barely supported on nVidia hardware, nevermind AMD. It's also only really beneficial when you're able to hit at least 50-60fps.

But in terms of TV's and game consoles... 1440p isn't really a big upgrade, it is for PC's and monitors because it's noticeably more work space but yea on consoles, movies, tv? Not really. Thus, 4k was the leap for that.

On PC, for a long time, the only people with need for 4k screens were people like professional artists, 4k gaming was (and still is) expensive, so people chose 1440p instead, which is much more affordable.

Pretty much this.

I personally do not like DLSS or any other upscaling so getting good framerates at 4k in newer titles is not easy without a high end card.  Also that software really has only caught on the last few years or so.

I was responding specifically to that 4K60 claim. It's not strictly true. If anything, it's quite silly to crank the settings to ultra because there are often diminishing returns and a big performance impact.

Minimum GPU requirements for reliable 4K60 even at middling display settings is...what, RTX 2080Ti or equivalent, being properly realistic? I never said anything about "ultra", I said "decent".

That's still performance significantly beyond your "average" PC these days, let alone in the early 2010s when 1440p started to become more widespread.

There's some titles that a 4090 won't even get 4K60 in reliably at Ultra.

I remember reading about the "ultra high definition" demo in 2008. It was 4320p, or 8K. Then a few years later, I saw that there was 4K, and was upset because I definitely hate seeing an awesome technology, then have something less powerful come first. I guess the same goes for 4K - 1440p.

At the time, they did say though that 8K would be available in 2020, so they were pretty accurate!
