The trailer is highlighting how out-of-touch the rest of the world is with American culture

Recommended Posts

I was aware that GTA has always been satire of (mostly) American culture, but reading this topic reminded me of an interview done by someone at Rockstar about how doing a parody of modern times runs a risk of being outdated 5 minutes from now, and this blurring of lines was perhaps the reason I saw the trailer more like a glorification of debauchery rather than being full-blown satire. Don't get me wrong, the trailer still had some issues (pacing, revealing too much of the map too soon, very little meaningful character development) but I see it in somewhat of a different light now that I've had a day to think about it. Still waiting how they'll implement things like social media if it's an in-game thing, can't really see criminals posting selfies on LifeInvader unless they're street thug level amateurs, in which case there probably won't be any elaborate heists but maybe small time bank robberies at best.

Just hope they still have the balls to go hard and not being afraid of offending people. Can't really see any other company writing a character like Lamar Davis in modern times, I hope they still can and will.

If the GTA VI trailer showed a bunch of upper middle class white and Cuban people shopping at Publix and getting stuck in traffic, it may be more “realistic”, but it would not be Grand Theft Auto.

First half of GTA V's reveal trailer was pretty much exactly that, and that trailer slaps hard, even 10 years later.

They did that and people still got pissed off anyway. You got ass shaking and making it rain on strippers at the club in the REVEAL TRAILER and people either complaining that it’s “woke” or that it’s “glorifying debauchery”. It doesn’t matter what they do, people will still find something to complain about.

I’ve had my fair share of criticism toward V, but only AFTER it had already been released for like 4 years and I had completed the game dozens of times. But people aren’t even giving it a chance and we’re ready to dismiss it from the second they pressed “play”

That’s a very fair point. I really do hope they go hard and lean heavily into the satire. Another feeling I got from watching the trailer was that this game is probably going to go into more depth parodying Florida than GTA V parodied California.

Some of the little details, like the E11even parody “Nine1Nine” and, again, the dirt bikes, strike me as almost South Florida in-jokes as much as parodies. They clearly did a LOT of research, would not surprise me at all if they had developers or some members of their team live for a significant period of time here in Miami.

I’ve never found Rockstar to be mean spirited with their parodies. So I welcome everything and everyone they mock in 6.

I am born and raised in Tampa and I can tell you from firsthand experience:

Rockstar might've been TOO accurate lmaoo. It's exaggerated obviously, it's a satire but there's so many things that are just spot on, from half-naked old dudes watering their garden (had a neighbor like that for years, you kinda just got used to it) to how horny the advertising is. I hope they add Bayshore Blvd's sidewalk, home of the World's Longest Sidewalk as well as all the sinkholes in the city lol.

i have been to tampa a few times. and i definitely saw a few weird people. and i have no doubt that there are plenty of people irl who behave just like the trailer people.

Miami is even crazier than Tampa in most aspects.  Tampa has the best Cuban food hands down though, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

A Proud Boy parody would be awesome!

In the leaks there was a world event that refrenced "far right milita" so them being proud boys (or any other rightwing extremists for that matter) seems likely

while i agree w you i think the trailer should've been more reserved and serious. this trailer would be great as a 3rd or 4th trailer.

It definitely felt like a trailer in between 1 and 2 in terms of how they've set out the first two trailers for IV, V and RDR2.

People don't know what the term "woke" actually means and its origins.

I think charged words like "woke" will inevitably be misappropriated to the point of ridiculousness, "simp" would be another good example.

My initial reaction to some parts of the trailer was one of bewilderment, but it took me about ten seconds to realize that what I was experiencing was a mild form of culture shock.

I agree with OP's overall point, but I kinda reject the notion that "the rest of the world" is solely at fault here, as @The Made Man put it:

a lot of ppl dont be outside and be introverts

I doubt that Americans are an exception to that.

Furthermore, I'd like to add that having the rug pulled from under their feet last year might have forced R* to "up the ante" with this trailer, but that's debatable.

Just a thought but maybe most of us know what US is like nowadays and it's just one of reasons why people wanted another period piece GTA?

I live in one of the top 10 most dangerous cities in the US (that also happens to be in the south) and I have never seen a more accurate depiction of what things are like here. Not every day of course but I saw so many things in the trailer that just made me think "Yep, that could definitely be here." Rockstar absolutely did their due diligence with their research on this one.

Car meets- doing donuts in the intersection, dirt bike street races that cops can do nothing about, violent Karens, muddin, block parties, all that stuff. Man I'm excited. I feel represented!

I was speaking in general when I made that comment.

That was my understanding, that part was me addressing the OP.

It's Florida. The opportunities are endless.

I'm actually more surprised that people from around the world, including some in the States, were complaining about the debauchery in the trailer. I thought that sh*t was completely normalized in like half of the globe? :sadkek:

Not to mention that the series itself (and let's be real, plenty of other games, movies and TV Series too) are no stranger to that type of content. The other half of the trailer is effectively just "funny Florida man" sh*t, which i ain't sure if i could consider it as a satire when said thing feels like a satire in itself to begin with.

Mind you, i don't even know that much about the States but even then, almost none of the things in the footage were a cultural shock to me. I'm more shocked about your healthcare system if I'm being honest.

Overall, my main complaint about the trailer (and in turn, the game) is the era setting. I don't mind a 2020s setting that much but i would really preferred it to be set in the past. Kinda like what this person said below.

Same here. I’ve spent my whole life in the south in many cities, Louisville Kentucky, Nashville and Memphis Tennessee, Atlanta Georgia, and I’d say that what I’ve seen in the trailer I’ve seen in places like Memphis and Atlanta especially. it felt familiar for certain

To a lot of these people it seems that the footage is a reflection of Rockstar "going woke" or being pozzed, but what they fail to understand is that this is literally just an actual depiction (albeit maybe a bit exaggerated, being that it's literally GTA) of Florida.

Can relate; I live in Florida

Of course, what is the problem? We have already had 2 GTA set in the present, now it's time to go back to the past, that's my logic

Someone hasn't realized numbered GTAs (minus 2) always take place in the present.

You also didn't state any actual logic, just your opinion...

Ok, so call it GTA Vice City 2 and set in the 80s again, that's your logic?

I was one of the guys that was extremely worried about losing the GTA spirit, after all the changes in Rockstar teams, and the general lack of edgyness in entertainment over the last few years.

The trailer reassured me a lot, what is GTA ? It's taking the trends of the era it's set in, turn them up to 100 and make fun of it.

It's Miami 2020s, there is social media everywhere for everything and anything, every white is a flag wearing redneck, every black is a wannabe trap rapper clown looking, every girl is in a bikini flaunting their ass... F*ck yes, give me more, it's pure GTA.
