The trailer is highlighting how out-of-touch the rest of the world is with American culture

This was a beautiful take on it and you’re absolutely right. Rockstar has always put satire and jokes into the games but they also want realism. They studied the areas and are representing that diversity of cultures and influences for the areas they area recreating.

Thanks!

And yea people should know this by now, which is why people should've predicted Miami/Vice City. But like I said, we still are yet to see more ethnic groups. I have a strong feeling R* is going to satire those sanctioned Russian oligarch types who are all over Miami with their yachts and sh*t. I'm also betting $100 that we get a satire of Proud Boys(basically confirmed with leak), and then the wealthy Latin elites among other circles in Miami. Its still early but yet R* captured the hood/ratchetness of Miami to a T, the rowdy tourists and flashy parts of Brickell,  redneck areas and overall craziness of Florida. Its scary how they got the hairstyles and clothing of Black Miamians so accurate. I can't wait to see crazy ass kids on dirt bikes in the hood. Not to sound like a broken record but based off this trailer R* did their homework.

Now I just wanna see more of the "bougie Latin culture" that Miami has.

None of this bothered me.

But I wouldn't like to see this social-media, TikTok stuff so much integrated into the game (as if all of GTA VI players are from Gen Z or whatever). And even if they were, not everyone is so hot about this subject. Most people I know think it's annoying.

I think “gta version of social media” will take over the radio we usually have.

how many people now still listen to the radio?.

It will be there for us to hear and see but can totally be skippable if you want.

just an evolution of the current gameplay mechanics. I still think we have radio stations.

GTA radios have been some of the best parts in GTA games.

The trailer seemed about right to me, seems like they did a good job poking fun at all at the cultures that are all the rage these days, hip-hop, redneck stuff. Not really too exaggerated if you've been to Florida in recent times and see how things are in the Miami/ really south Florida area. Miami has always been like this though, to some degree. But these days that sorta thing is everywhere in the US now.

I really don't like people behaving like this and USA is also not a country I would ever visit even if I got paid to go there. I hope the story and the game is more normal though this is just a trailer.

At this point i don't know if GTA is still exagerated representation of America, or just alternative representation of america, and i'm afraid to ask :sadkek:

I lived in Florida for just over a decade. Three-and-a-half years in Brevard County, seven in Fort Lauderdale. I visited Los Angeles last year, and I was perhaps the only person in America who found that city's reputation for vanity and narcissism to be exaggerated -- largely because I was comparing it in my head to South Florida.

If this trailer is anything to go by, then Rockstar did their homework on Florida when designing Vice City and Leonida. Florida's been a punching bag for Americans of my generation and younger for years now, seen as the "land of fruits and nuts" the way my parents' generation saw California, only with opposite politics (a discussion for another time). And frankly, the reputation is not unearned. Florida can be weird and off-putting in ways that most people are only familiar with through "Florida Man" news stories from afar.

A lot of people outside the US seem to have this impression of America, especially the vast swath outside New York and California, as a mix of Leave It to Beaver, Little House on the Prairie, and '80s Spielberg/Amblin movies, one where all the crazy stuff only happens in the big coastal cities. In truth, some of the most decadent and depraved elements of American culture can be found out there.

A Proud Boy parody would be awesome!

This is modern day America. Miami is known for being the party capital of America. So young women twerking on a car is sadly normal in this day and age.

Its one of them but its not the party capital of America, that's Las Vegas

Exaggerated... exactly.

Some people are missing this point.

Their representation of modern Miami is fine, but I'm beginning to think it'd be better if they had gone for the 1980s era.

It’s been done several times already. There would be very little new ground to cover. No originality.

I think they can got rid of radio for sure. But they will replace with something else. A playlist, Spotify kind of app or something. Músic in GTA is big part of the appeal and is always filled with some many tracks. You cant get rid of Músic in this game.

There's a reason why the "Florida Man" meme exists.

It’s crazy how many people hate the trailer for being too over the top and exaggerated. Like, by brother in Christ, the trailer was pretty tame in comparison to real like Florida :lmaokek:

Tbh, I've seen some guy randomly interviewing people on Miami beach, and the place was so full of people, 99% of whom might as well have gone naked since they were wearing so little. So, yeah, Miami, or at least the beach area is definitely some major party hot spot. And if the game depicts spring break tourists then it's doubly so.

The trailer was ostentatious, sure. But I think the reason for that was to establish very early on that this isn't a rehash of the original Vice City, and that we should expect something completely new with a totally different aesthetic. I think it really works in that regard, giving us a good idea not just of the dynamic between Lucia and Jason, but how the world works and the state of society during the story.

Personally, I really enjoy just how crazy everything feels, and especially liked the brief glimpses we got of criminal life in the game.

Yo, I never realized that they recreated these scenes based on real Florida Man & Woman moments. Now that's actually cool.

I've seen a decent minority of people rag on the trailer for featuring a lot of "ghetto, trashy, low income" behavior, like the girls twerking on the cars, the gangsters doing risky sh*t and looking like freaks, or the weird rednecks.

To a lot of these people it seems that the footage is a reflection of Rockstar "going woke" or being pozzed, but what they fail to understand is that this is literally just an actual depiction (albeit maybe a bit exaggerated, being that it's literally GTA) of Florida.

The past games were either set decades ago when phenomena like this was a lot more subdued or in places that are not as trashy & bizarre as south Florida, so for non-US citizens it was easy to overlook bizarre phenomena that typically occur in the US, but it's become evident that the new setting of modern day Florida is the first actual glimpse, to a lot of people around the world, of just how crazy and trashy some places in the US can be.

To a Florida native, seeing a black girl twerk on a car is probably just another Saturday night, but to some random guy from Bulgaria it seems like an exaggerated and atypical display of debauchery only displayed and glorified for shock value.

But the harsh truth that a lot of non-US demographics are going to face is that things like that are literally just commonplace in Florida, and America in general.

GTA has moved away from simple games that derive their plot from old mobster movies like The Godfather or Goodfellas, and is now a satirized reflection of modern American society, and the harsh truth is that GTA 6 is only going to double down on glamour, trashiness, vanity & debauchery.

This is what GTA is about, and people around the world who don't know much about Florida besides Scarface and Miami Vice are in for a culture shock.

a few google searches of "Florida man" and you're set

The radio's not going anywhere, even GTA Online still gets new radio stations every so often. Both of those things can coexist. What we will probably have is a ZiT app to stream any of the radio songs any time.

Well GTAO's The Contract DLC has a ZiT streaming app showing up on Franklin's office computer so... :p

Interesting take on reactions to the trailer, which I will first start by saying I overall enjoyed and felt encouraged that GTA VI will be great…

…but….

Maybe some of this reaction isn’t the rest of the world Vs modern America and Florida and more a generational thing.

@Mister Pink made a good point that if you’re a long time R* fan and ergo of an older generation it may be hard to relate to this stuff. Me, I played the original top down GTA at university and I’m in my forties. I sort of roughly know what someone means by the verb twerking but I reckon if you asked me to define it properly I’d do I as badly as my Dad trying to explain how a search engine works. Social media really isn’t a big thing for me, personally I think it’s the blight of the age.

I noticed this is GTA V to be honest. As the tail end of Gen X I already found it easier to identify with Michael. Not because Ned Luke is an amazing actor (although that helps), and obviously overlooks the fact that like all GTA protagonists he is a murderer and bad person etc - but it’s taken as given we overlook that when we play the game (I hope). It’s because he was closer to my stage of life.

GTA does have an ageing fan base. It’s hard to focus on a trailer that appeals to both people in their teens to early twenties and their mid forties.

Me - I just saw another beautifully detailed open world game. Tick. But it’s hard to be all things to all people when you aim to such a wide audience.

Like someone posted earlier:

Honestly its not even just Florida. As someone from the Detroit area, I can say the car twerking, riding not so legal road bikes everywhere and shutting down public streets/highways to do donuts... At least that stuff is happening even up here in Michigan.

As someone who lives in Miami, I think the trailer was exaggerated, and certainly doesn’t show the best of the real South Florida or the fictional… uh… South Leonida… but of course, it’s not meant to.

Yes, most Miamians and Miami tourists of all races in real life are simply normal people going about their lives, not twerking or getting chased by the police. However, it does happen. The “thugs on dirt bikes” news story in the trailer made me laugh, because that really does happen every Sunday afternoon on US1/ S Dixie Hwy.

Even more importantly though, the GTA series isn’t meant to show the best of society, or even the average person. Not everyone who lives in LA is a vapid celebrity or gang member. Not everyone who lives in New York or New Jersey is in the Russian or Italian mafia. GTA is, and should be, about showing (for lack of a better term) the quirkiest, most violent, most bizarre sections of society.

If the GTA VI trailer showed a bunch of upper middle class white and Cuban people shopping at Publix and getting stuck in traffic, it may be more “realistic”, but it would not be Grand Theft Auto.
