Doing each game separately for its 10th anniversary would have been a solid roadmap if you ask me.

And that’s literally what they did with III, VC and LCS mobile (granted, the latter was ported by Lucid Games). They’re still lousy ports, but there’s a reason that SA is generally considered worst of the mobile conversions.

You’d think R*/T2 would have done the same for each game’s 20th anniversary, as the scope for console/PC remasters should have, in theory, been more ambitious than straightforward mobile ports. But they clearly believed it was more important to have something to slot into E&E’s original November 2021 release date, quality be damned. Remastering three large (for their time) open-world games on a (presumably) small budget and such a tight deadline was never going to work, even if a developer like Nightdive Studios, or hell, even R* itself was in charge. Giving the project to GSG and choosing to base the games on their crappy mobile ports were just the final nails in the coffin.

On another note, knowing what we know now - that GTA VI is at least 12 months away - waiting until their respective anniversaries to release each 3D Trilogy remaster (and not putting out a bundle until work on SA DE had been completed) arguably would have been a better way for T2 to meet its “more consistent releases from R*” goal from a few years back than just staggering the already-long-overdue PC port of RDR1 and releasing two more versions of GTA V (I’ll give PC Enhanced a little slack in this regard, as it’s a free upgrade, but there’s still no excuse for E&E to have been exclusive to consoles for three years).

Running on the old engine underneath, but with the upgraded visuals of Unreal on top. Featuring brand new lighting and textures, as well as modernized controls and menus.

The Oblivion remake makes it painfully obvious what a soulless mess the 'definitive' edition is.

I had little hope for it, since it essentially got the same treatment as San Andreas. But damn. They knocked it out of the park. Amazing what people can accomplish when they actually care.

What a shame too

I fear we will never see something as great as the oblivion remake for the classic GTAs

and dont even bring up the stories games

Though the whole project has been a disaster from the beginning, I was pretty impressed playing GTA III recently on the Switch. I didn't encounter any major bugs and really enjoyed the game as a whole. Unlike Vice City and San Andreas, I hadn't previously played the original GTA III as a kid so I didn't already have that nostalgia and memory of the original which may have coloured how I felt about the definitive edition.

The games play fine and feel smooth, I’ll give them that

I respectfully disagree. Movement is serviceable in III (and to a lesser extent, SA), I guess. But both the on-foot and driving physics in VC feel very off, almost floaty, if that makes sense (e.g. while Tommy could already sprint faster than much of the ped traffic in the original, it feels as if he's on the moon on mobile and in the DE).

And the camera controls in all three games are just awful. Even if you ignore the obnoxious auto-centering, it's obvious that GSG just mapped right stick/mouse movements to a "finger" being dragged across an "invisible touch screen" and called it a day (this is also an issue in SA 2014 and all of the OG mobile ports when using a controller. The vehicle side mission prompt being permanently on-screen is another example of this). The X and Y axes also seem to have different sensitivities that will never match regardless of your settings, which only exacerbates the camera problems.

Back then when they were just rumors, I expected it to be like all 3d gtas in one game with games like from vc till vcs as dlc or extension or something in Rage instead of that blocky thing, thought of Claude, Tommy and CJ in one Maverick, Toni and Vic in other one. Nah, Rockstar crapped on us that day, and I am still glad to say that I prefer those og games which are not massive in size and also available in emus, with u man. @NightmanCometh96 Rocking MCLA CE here in rpcs3 after my cousin got rid of it for some other game, his ps3 super slim died days after that.
And with GTA IV and 6 they are gonna pull the same crap again like that of consoles first, pc later. No wonder why I viewed Xbox 360 as the last great console for myself, although my journey ended up with consoles in 2009 when my 2004 ps2 slim died along with completing gta lcs in 09.
Pcsx2 fork with cleo did it again for me this year. And surprisingly MC2 in pcsx2 doesn't crash after any race like its pc port.

@jdfsociety I wish you had that like I did on pc on a Philps CRT Monitor in 2007 on Win XP with no mods, not very easy times those were since today mods and save files make it so good for me to play any game today. And remember that Trilogy DE of 2020 or 2021 is Defective Edition, thats that. The og gta 3 takes a dump on this so called de.

Don't know where else to ask this. Are planar reflections option better than screen space reflections in terms of accuracy and general looks? I know how SSR works mostly and I am aware that it won't show what's not on the screen but no idea about planar. Asking about GTA III.

Oh and about San Andreas, is there a mod that gives the ability to move the camera while flying a plane or a chopper? On Windows.

I think that reflections are partially broken (and sometimes there is a strange yellow reflection that change the entire cars colors, and i don't like that at all)

The yellow reflection happens with classic mode only

Has anyone tested TDE on the Nintendo Switch 2 that came out recently? How well do they run on the system compared to the original Switch?

I've very briefly tried out both Vice City and San Andreas on the switch 2, they seemed to run pretty well and look a bit nicer than the original switch versions. Admittedly it was a really quick play session though.

Planning to play more San Andreas though so will report back.

Arkham Knight, one of the worst looking and performing Switch ports out there, runs noticeably better on Switch 2 (although it still looks like sh*t. Take the low-res textures, for instance...). So the DE should, in theory, be hitting a consistent 30FPS as well. However, short of R* Australia going back to work on enhancement patches for Switch 2 (at this point, I'd rather R*/T2/etc. put any Trilogy-related manpower towards simply doing Nightdive-esque rereleases of the originals for III's 30th anniversary), that would still leave you with uneven frame pacing, which also continues to be a problem with the mobile versions, as well as the Fidelity Modes on PS/Xbox.

That said, I did boot up III and SA for a few minutes, but I couldn't find the willpower to go any further than that. The TAA, combined with the low resolution of the Switch versions, makes everything pretty ugly (in remasters that are already unpleasant to look at, aside from the Classic Lighting in SA). This is further exacerbated if you connect your Switch 2 to a giant 4K TV. I kid you not, the TAA artifacts on Claude in motion made everything look jittery; almost as if he were being animated by the Spider-Verse crew, but not in a good way. :sadkek:
