Trilogy Definitive Edition OUT NOW on Mobile via Netflix - Updated on All Platforms

I still don't know how I feel about the classic lighting in GTA San Andreas, in some places it looks great, but in others it just looks like a cheap filter.

I don't know about you people, but this don't look good to me, it looks like there's a giant flashlight illuminating the scene, it even illuminates CJ in a completely unnatural way.

Now compare it to the original version of the game, only the sky and distant assets are affected by the purple color, while everything else is dark, as it should be, it looks way more natural.

This is also a issue in other areas of the game with different color palettes "in my opinion".

GTAIII has the same problem... Claude is too illuminated; some people say that is similar to GTA LCS and i think that is true...

Please report all these issues to Rockstar support

It depends, sometimes it's too light and sometimes too dark. That's the difficulty with switching to a fundamentally different lighting system. Going through and making every single piece of the map and every cutscene look the same as it used to would be a gargantuan effort in itself.

I'm sure Rockstar support is overloaded with reports already. I think they look at these forums as well. We'll see what's left after (hopefully) another update.

Another thing that still needs fixing is the visible seams in the map out on the water:

They also put this tree right in the way of a stunt jump:

Since they did a giant update of all 3 games, is the game much better now after all from a recent patch?

Over the last several weeks, I did a full playthrough of III (with all achievements) and started the other two games, but quickly gave up on VC (and am already contemplating the same for SA). Mobile port jank is one thing, but I just can't get past the goofy character models, especially in the former.

If the games had launched in the state they're in right now, I don't think they would have been as reviled as they've generally been since 2021. That said, at the end of the day, it's still clear that you're playing GSG's buggy, crappy 10th anniversary mobile ports (in retrospect, III was the only decent one) with a new coat of paint sloppily-applied via UE4; as good as classic lighting can look compared to the stock UE4 lighting, it still needs some work in III and VC

To answer your question, I suppose the games are in a somewhat playable state now (i.e. not quite as buggy as they were at launch, better-but-not-perfect visuals, etc.), but it doesn't change the fact that they're based on fundamentally-flawed work (work that the GTA community at large has known to be flawed for years). As such, I just can't recommend them if you have any means of playing the originals (be it emulation or real hardware). If you're still curious, though, I'd only get the DE if it happens to be on sale (it's $24 for another day or so on Steam, but I'm not sure about consoles); whatever you do, do not shell out the full $60 that R*/T2 would normally ask for.

To be honest, has anyone disliked the fact that they called the release the "Definitive Edition" to begin with? I'm sure for many it initially implied that we'd be getting a little more than just an upscaled version of some cheap mobile ports (with the same bugs and jank virtually unchanged), especially considering that the detailed Mafia remake (another T2 property) used the exact same moniker. Not that I expected RDR-tier quality, but something on the level of Bully: Scholarship Edition would have been a decent compromise imo.

I've said before that if they were going to put in as minimal effort as they did, they'd have just been better off just updating the original PC versions. Then again, would have been harder to finesse their customers that way.

About new (im)possible patches remember that we cannot check beta branches anymore

Why did something change in SteamDB recently? I searched on Google but nothing came up conclusive, so please enlighten.

Bad example. They always sucked at this.

Scholarship Edition, as bad of a remaster as it is, at least has several new classes (among a few other small additions, IIRC). The "Definitive" GTA Trilogy doesn't really have anything of the sort to warrant its moniker, aside from some QoL changes (that in many cases, were far better-implemented by the modding community in the original PC ports, such as ClassicAxis, SACarCam/LCSCarCam and SkyGFX): it's literally a collection of decade-old mobile ports with the rendering needlessly moved to a different engine, as well as godawful changes to the art direction. Much like Gen 9 GTA V's "Expanded & Enhanced" tagline (that was quickly dropped once it became apparent that SP wouldn't be receiving any of the former), I assume the DE title was coined up by T2 and/or the marketing division at R*.

But it looks like everything paid off, sadly. The audience at large seems to only care about the "prettier graphics" (I guess Jim Ryan was on to something with his "Why would anybody play [old gen games in current year]?" comment :cringekek:), and dismisses the abundance of glitches because "YeAh tHey'rE BuGgY, bUt So wEre ThE OriGiNaLS!!!". Yes, I've heard things like this parroted well before VGD's mobile versions released, let alone the console/PC updates. It sucks, especially since the general consensus outside of diehard threads like this is that "the DE is finally, completely fixed!". And if that rumor about these updates having been sat on for a year+ (and development having ceased ages ago) has any merit, this is it; this is what we're going to be stuck with for the indefinite future (R*/T2 sure as hell won't be relisting the originals on PlayStation/Xbox/Steam. They don't even advertise the RGL listing all that much...). At this rate, I doubt things will change even by GTA III's 30th anniversary.

It's disheartening that most people's introduction to the Trilogy moving forward will be via these outsourced, rushed, cashgrab mobile conversions that look like a scrapped Fortnite crossover and have been left in a state of limbo; just as VGD was starting to bring the games to something resembling a reasonable state (although there's only so much you can do when the basis for these versions was fundamentally-compromised in the first place).

I got these on PC over Xmas since they were pretty cheap in the sale and after installing them and seeing the PC versions up close, I just can't, even after all these patches it feels like the texture issues and such are made that more obvious on PC and it just constantly makes me wonder why things were done this way.

Sounds like his issue was more with the bugs and the restored missions (which were probably cut for a reason). I was referring more to the updated look, which improved the visuals while more or less staying true to the original art-style.

I’ve been playing this trash heap (SA) on my iPad using a dualsense controller and I cannot get used to the fact that the steering isn’t variable.

It seems just pushing the stick slightly to the left and the wheels go full lock and vice versa.

The fact the LOD models are so awful looking and spawn so close really breaks my mind.

bruh... it's a mobile port. It's designed to use touchscreen buttons, why would you expect variable steering?

Because it works perfectly fine on the original mobile port.

Plus isn’t there an option for an on screen analog stick? There’s one in the original.

Anyway I will happily take glossy jeans CJ over this horse turd of a game until it’s fixed

I've seen a few videos of this already and I'm absolutely amazed at how this is looking / playing. But it leaves me with a sour taste, this port was possible only thanks to re3... Imagine what we could have had on PC and other devices.

I hope that the relatively low interest around the Dreamcast will be enough to prevent T2 from taking it down, I'm very curious to see how this project evolves.

It has been almost four years, and I’m still disgusted with the way the re3 situation was handled. Imagine if R*/T2 had done what Sega did with Christian Whitehead and Stealth and brought the re team onboard to work on official versions for modern platforms (and perhaps given them resources to tackle SA). They wouldn’t even have to scrap the DE; they could have easily billed the reverse-engineered projects as the “Classic Editions” and given players a choice between remasters and more faithful versions (bundling everything together would have also justified the Trilogy’s obnoxious $60 asking price, IMO).

Instead, they defaulted to taking legal action as they typically do: not just forcing the re team to cease their work, but, for all intents and purposes, strong-arming customers into having no choice but to buy GSG’s sh*tty mobile ports should they wish to play the Trilogy on non-RGL storefronts/platforms. Surely, some of the higher-ups within R*/T2 took a look at re3 and realized just how much better of a job the community had done than GSG? It still baffles me that everyone involved with the DE was content with releasing the slop that we’re stuck with to this day (I’d love to hear what the artists who actually worked on the originals thought of the butchered art direction). F*cking over the community in the process was just kicking us when we were down.

Spoiler

But what else would you expect from a company that thinks a save file is capable of damaging their IP?

I really love the Sega-reminiscent color grading and PS1 era fidelity. It's cool as f*ck. Would be even cooler to see that fan-recreated Beta GTA3 on Dreamcast.

That DF video shows a much improved draw distance from the previous video I'd seen.

To even get close to the PS2 draw distance is incredible when you consider the fact that this is what the Driver series looked like in 1999:

i hope for a stable patch for these games

Steam just required me to update III, but strangely not any of the other DE games. IDK how to find info on what that update contained.

Is anybody else having issues with the NRG's rear end popping up a lot in VC?

On my post-classic lighting playthrough, there are still some pretty glaring issues, but man does the game look great.

Some of the issues that still exist: lots of grass is using the pavement traction level and style of skid marks, reverse lights are not working, the Stretch has a black front end, weirdness with the water at times (see below), the Romero has two orange headlights, the Patriot's wheels have some kind of LOD issue, and the construction site in Demolition Man was already using the destroyed model before the mission.

I am a huge fan of these games, so decided to complete them after big patch on 100%. I’ve played it more than 20 years ago as a kid and I want complete 3 parts again.

Does it worth after the patch? Or original versions on ps4 are better?

I will say it's good they're patching it, but I wish the shoddy starting release shouldn't have had to happen in the first place. For what it's worth, it was useful to be able to play VC and III for the first time. I did enjoy that at least.
