I never said there are no issues tied to framerate. I'm talking about it affecting vehicle traction, specifically

Then no, I have no specific evidence of that. None except for me struggling to control a PCJ on DE when it's perfectly fine on the original game. What I do know is that others consistently report the exact same thing (even at 30 FPS on DE, imagine that) and I can deduce that game physics affect traction in vehicles.

Not to mention, how can you know that his controller is not glitching and giving false inputs, or he's not accidentally resting his finger on the brake button without realizing it?

Because it's a widely known framerate bug, lol. Just Google it and see for yourself.

You can find lots of people claiming lots of things, but what you're linking me is clearly not a person that "spent years of trial and error trying to figure out and reproduce quirks in the game script/engine".

When I said that I was referring to speedrunners. They are the ones who have spent way more time on these games than you or I. Speedrun.com even bans runs with the frame limiter off for this reason. It's a notoriously unreliable and unpredictable thing when it comes to vehicles. And look at that, one of the things listed is how it affects friction... Again, this could be solved by just launching a vanilla SA game and seeing these problems for yourself. You're essentially debating settled law. I cited the few examples I could find quickly, but I promise if you do an ounce of research yourself you will be able to find out more. The people that worked on framerate vigilante would be a great resource. That's why I linked the thread, because you obviously didn't know about it.

I've tried SA DE on my Series X multiple times now using two different headsets - is it just me or is the sound quality even more atrocious than in the Xbox 360 mobile port? During cutscenes, voices are okay, but during gameplay the voices of peds and CJ sound extremely compressed and I got the feeling I hear their sound twice in an overlay with a minor delay (don't know how to describe it in a better way). And the wind/ambient sound in the forest area sounded extremly bugged and low quality aswell, it played the same repetitive loop over and over again with horrible quality.

Don't know if that's an issue on my end or if the sound quality is really that bad and compressed. All of that doesn't happen in the OG PC version I'm currently replaying.

The only thing that seems higher quality than the original mobile port is the radio (which isn't that hard to do, tbh. I'm pretty sure the songs were low bitrate and mono, even on PS3/360 :sadkek:). I'm not sure how much better it is in quality, but it definitely seems to be stereo playback again. Everything else sounds on-par with mobile, if not worse in my experience. But also keep in mind that I say this as someone who hasn't thoroughly played the DE with headphones, and tends to have background noise playing (YouTube/podcasts/etc.) on my MacBook.

The latest patch enticed me to revisit and finish off my playthrough of Vice City on the Switch, and wow what a difference. Classic lighting and the additional changes it brings are a night and day difference, I kept pausing to take comparison shots or just stop and admire how good the distant islands look now with the added distance fog. I did encounter a few bugs still (pictured below as an example is in Fort Baxter where there are invisible/missing textures within the towers, or at least in that specific tower). Really hoping these titles get a few more updates to truly make them 'definitive', they're not quite there yet. Some additional fun stuff like being able to apply a CRT filter would be fun or toggle on/off classic font, classic pause screen, etc.

They definitely messed up the sound in some way. Some voice lines in SA late in the game crackle because of this I suspect. It's not as ear-piercing as the 360 port, but its definitely a downgrade.

One of the things that bothered me (and others, I'm sure) is how dark and overly contrasty things can be. Well...here's what I settled on...
sliders.thumb.png.812053b2d71454459d3169c337ca7934.png

Brightness is 2 ticks from the left, contrast aaaaaalllll the way down.

I didn't just pull these values totally out of my butt, I used Lilium's excellent SDR / HDR analysis shader to try to objectively match the original tonally as closely as possible. Well...technically it's not the original, it's re3, don't tell Take2.

Obviously the waveforms look rather different, but in terms of the shadows and highlights they are relatively similar in their range. May / may not apply to the other games, so YMMV, but I'm sure it won't be too far off. For anyone worried, brightness is a gamma control so lowering it will thankfully not affect the brightness of bright objects that clip at 100% SDR white.

Highly recommend watching this If you haven't before.

This video goes in deep detail about how the Definitive Editions were made and Why they came out in the state they did.

This goes over why they couldn't use the original games from PS2 and Why textures were misspelled and More.

WTF?? Over 1 hour?!? My god :sadkek:

and it's a very old video...

So I just picked up GTA III again and I've been welcomed to a surprise. And I'm not sure if I should even mention it out of fear of it being patched out... But the recent patch has gotten rid of the Australian region censorship. Since it released in 2001, all released (including the original DE) versions had the ability to pick up prostitutes removed. I was shocked when one came to the window of my car and hopped in. Never have I experienced this in III due to my country's old rating laws.

If there are any German or French players here, can they confirm if their region censorship has been turned off?

There's time stamps to skip to the development part of the video? Also yeah it's old but It's still true on what the development was like and What corners they took to help a small studio remaster 3 games in 2 years. Yeah the bugs part of the video is old but The games are still an unfinished product compared to the originals.

Looks like the newly released Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 remasters that just came out got the treatment the trilogy should have had from the beginning. QOL updates, new visuals but faithful to the original, and you can seamlessly switch between the original graphics and the remastered graphics via thumbstick press.

A new video has been posted just a few minutes ago for more Bad Collisions, Bad Textures, Fake Textures, CJ falling through the map in multiple locations and More.

If we do get another patch I'm gonna assume we're far out. Probably won't see anything until before GTA 6's Release if we're lucky. If we do really end up getting it I'd be expecting another patch with hundreds of fixes again. Really Big to Really Small fixes.

Really hope we get a finished product with these someday! 🙏

Seriously, you need to send all these videos to official Rockstar support...

I will not start missions until the real solution

I've reported 100+ bugs already. Talking to them multiple days and Sending exact locations in the process to speed things up that I've found that no one else has as well. It's on everyone else to do the same. If it's only one bug or many or videos from other players. Any bit helps.

TLDW: While III’s classic lighting is generally better than the stock UE4 effects, it’s also lacking compared to VC and (especially) SA. The sky colors aren’t 100% faithful to the original PS2 version (tested with trails on and off), fog and clouds that were present in the original are either pared back or missing entirely in certain weather sets, and the rain effects aren’t as convincing as on PS2 (in the DE, rain falls straight down, whereas in the original, it can fall in multiple directions. Better than the laser milk drops present at launch, I suppose, but that’s not saying much). Oddly enough, the stock lighting has a very light haze in the distance during one of the weather conditions; this is completely removed with classic lighting. In hindsight, it’s clear that VGD gave SA’s visuals more attention than its predecessors.

And here are the other comparisons, in case anyone hasn’t watched them yet:

The grilles of the Landstalker and Bobcat are both asymmetrical and poorly upscaled:

The traffic paths for several roads in South Staunton are misaligned, sending cars onto the sidewalk and wrong side of the road:

And this may have been in the original game as well, but the dirt road to Salvatore's mansion is using the traction quality of pavement:

And this isn't a bug, but I really wish they would bring back the headlight and taillight coronas. They really added to the vibe of the originals.

Ok, by today we cannot check anymore beta branches for these games, all branches are private now... (affected many other games as well)

edit: for some reasons that private branch is gone

I can't spin the wheels in III by holding gas & brake together. That was possible in the original, wasn't it?

Nope, that wasn't possible in the original version of GTA III either. Holding gas & brake to do burnouts only became a feature from Vice City onwards.

I just finished both the original (via PCSX2) and DE versions of III. I planned to earn every achievement in each of them; while I was able to get everything in the DE, I'm still missing around 15 of the whopping 180 PS2 achievements (vs. the "measly" 29 in official rereleases). Essentially, the PS2 list is more in depth and asks a lot of you compared to R*'s official achievements. Beat Turismo in 180 seconds without much of a fuss? Shave that down to 140 for the PS2-equivalent. Or try your hand at winning with the top-down camera enabled for the entire race. It was a satisfying experience overall, but I'm perfectly content with ignoring the stuff I haven't yet earned (such as completing all 12 levels of Paramedic in Shoreside Vale :sadkek:).

Back on topic, I found the DE... tolerable, I guess? At least from a playability standpoint. It's a mediocre mobile port that doesn't play anywhere near as well as the original, sure, but since I've always found III to be the "least" bad of GSG's work with R*, I was willing to put up with some of the setbacks. The visuals are still awful, though. Classic lighting needs some work (as the video on the last page shows), the characters still look overly-cartoony and the texture work (e.g. the pristine roads) takes away all of the grittiness of the original game.

I'm trying my damndest to give VC a fair shake, but the more I play, the more I think to myself: "I just can't do it. I can't take this sh*t no more, man!" Tommy's character model was legitimately the breaking point for me. I would have been willing to power my way through the mobile port jank (to an extent), bad character models and imperfections with classic lighting like I did with III; but every time I look at what is supposed to be Tommy, I die a little inside (Claude is at least somewhat recognizable, the deer in headlights expression notwithstanding). The plastic sheen over his hair (and other objects) doesn't help, either; it exacerbates the cartoony "art direction" and makes the world look like a playset filled with action figures. The character designs alone are why I still consider VC to have suffered the most when it comes to the visual overhaul, although SA is probably the worst remaster as a whole, given the all of issues dating back to the original mobile port (and PC before that).

Once I get done with OG VC (debating between PC and OG Xbox. Not 100% about PS2 emulation, as RetroAchievements only supports the "Hatian-Friendly" 3.0 version at the moment), I might give SA DE a shot, simply because, of the three "Definitive" Editions, VGD seems to have given its classic lighting the most attention.

I've mentioned this very often, but I still can't unsee the lack of those destructible trees in the countryside. On PS2, Xbox and on PC they're scattered around the countrsyside and alongside the road, making the map much more dense. There are really tons of those trees and plants (ash trees, elm trees for example). Also the desert has much more vegetation, destructible stones and dead bushes in the original version, including destructible cacti and Joshua Trees.

While the vegetation in the DE looks good visually when it comes to trees and grass, it lacks a lot of variety like dry/dead grass, wooden branches, destructible plants and greenery in general - it's just the same grass & bush copy/pasted a million times.

thats cause they based it off the mobile version, which got rid of all the grass and breakable trees and bushes from the original. then added them back doing a half ass job, thats why now we have collision issues, unbreakable trees, floating foliage etc. i will never understand why they picked that incompetent dev team

Reminder of R*/T2's active malice towards the SP modding community, and some of the projects they took down to make way for their 20th anniversary mobile ports the DE. It's still embarrassing to see how much better the fans have treated R*'s legacy titles over the years than the company itself ever has.

The Hoods Rumpo still says "DISK" for some reason instead of "Rebel" as it should:
