Trilogy Definitive Edition OUT NOW on Mobile via Netflix - Updated on All Platforms

I hate to say it but I don't think R* has much incentive to continue working on them. They are one of the few business-first game devs that (somehow) still have a good reputation. They aren't known for long-standing support on their games unless there's money to be made, and its fair to say that the Trilogy has reached the end of its release cycle in their eyes. With the game now being 3 years old and the mobile versions finally being released, there's no real incentive to continue working on them since all the money to be made has been at this point. It doesn't help that this new patch has been given the reputation of it "fixing" DE which would send the message to Rockstar that it's now "good enough".

I still believe that last post from the alleged insider about the development of DE. They might have not been 100% accurate about the fixes just sitting "untouched" for a year since there are some exclusive fixes in this patch, but it makes sense that R* would want to bring parity between the versions with one more patch and then put it back on ice. Frankly, I'm surprised they put this one out at all considering this is the same company that is selling a literally unplayable, improperly cracked version of Manhunt on Steam and has done absolutely nothing about it and probably never will. They have shown that they aren't one for fan service and this game probably won't suddenly become an exception. I really hope I'm wrong, but outside of a hotfix here and there I don't see much reason from Rockstar's perspective to keep spending money when they can just collect passive income forever by letting these 60 dollar "fixed" versions being the only ones you can buy on most platforms until the end of time.

Prior to the latest patch I would have agreed with you, I've followed the whole DE debacle since the beginning so I'm well aware of their failures and complete lack of community engagement when it comes to these titles. However, no one saw the latest update coming and really, there was no incentive for them to bring these changes to the console/PC versions considering they could have done it a long time ago and didn't.

I'm only saying it's a possibility because they are stating on their support site and in replies that they are actively working on a patch, they could of course be lying but it would be quite brazen to choose to outright lie as opposed to what they usually do and put up a wall of silence.

The fact that the DE retails for $60 in spite of what it actually is (and will likely always be) under the hood sours me a lot more than it should. SA 2014 was $15, which is still too much if you ask me, but at least it had an introductory discount price when it launched on 360 (around $3.75, IIRC; cheaper than the iOS/Android versions that it was based on, oddly enough). The $24 sale price on PSN (and now Steam, thanks to the Autumn Sale!) seems more appropriate as long as you know what you're paying for ahead of time: $8 a pop for mobile ports that are still subpar (let alone for a company like R*), but not as bad as they were at launch. I sure as hell wouldn't recommend the DE if you had to shell out any more than that.

I still don't think this entire fiasco was worth delisting the originals and killing re3/reVC, though, especially if that insider info has any merit to it (and I agree with you that it does).

this mod fixes the ugly UE lods, and the procedural elements like grass foliage and rocks in the desert etc

it doesn’t fix the black seams you see from the skies, which are chunks of the map.

It can also increase ped and vehicle draw distance but it apparently causes issue with density of them being reduced and street lights disappearing so you can disable that option.

highly recommend it for San Andreas, it’s a big difference with procedural elements especially.

also mods like classic fonts and radio restore work for me and they’re go a long way to help these games, it ain’t SA without Tom petty.

I legit cannot even play any of the games on Steam. I get this "Connecting to Social Club" popup every time I launch them. If I click "OK", it just comes back immediately. :kekw:

Spoiler

SoxuFBL.png

I opened up a ticket with R* Support, but I'm not holding my breath for an actual solution; I expect I'll have to initiate a refund. Disappointing, but I can't say I'm surprised.

On a more positive note, I finally caved and acquired Steam copies of GTA 1 and 2. It's a shame R* doesn't sell them officially anymore, but it feels nice to have them in my library; somehow, I also feel less icky about the sum I had to pay for them vs. the DE. Make of that what you will...

EDIT: Alt tabbing back to the game several times makes multiple copies of that Social Club popup appear. If I click OK on a few of them, say 3 or 4, I am finally able to access the menu and start the game. OK then. I still shouldn't have to deal with that, though. The Rockstar services seem to be fine as of this edit, so it has to be a problem with the DE itself.

12-02-2024 EDIT: More support rambling below:

Spoiler

As expected, R* Support has been unhelpful. They keep mentioning GTAO (and only GTAO) and believe it's an Online issue, despite the fact that I told them multiple times it's a DE-specific problem (you'd think that my ticket being in the SA - Story Mode category would clue them in, but I guess not). Anyway, upon further testing, the popup goes away if I hit OK two or three times; alt-tabbing wasn't necessary. But again, this is not an issue that should be happening in the first place.

Try to open manually Rockstar Launcher before GTA and check config

Wait, they really changed Claude to just be his GTA III model in SA? That's so weird that it doesn't feel intentional. Fair enough if his face is somehow the same (some people don't age that much in 9 years I guess, lmao). But the stubble, the clothes? I get that the old model was way too babyfaced but damn, what a bad change.

Aside from that though, I've been replaying both III and VC and think those games are so close to being just right. Having such a good time revisiting VC especially. I may wait and see if there's more patches in store for SA though. It clearly still needs the most help, despite all the progress made.

tommy still looks bad in VC though, as do Ken and some other characters. I started a fresh playthrough but struggling to continue, the fortnite looking models just don't fit. Definitely need one last patch to fix them

I think they made some texture/line changes to Tommy's face to make him look a little less soft. He's missing the angry brow though, and the Street clothes look awkward on him at times. I dunno why they made the shirt puffier/fatter to begin with. It's not enough to get me to stop playing, but I hope they do a patch that's all about looking over some models again. That is, if this wasn't the final one. Hope not.

Three years later, the VCFD firetruck in the Definitive Edition still has an invisible water cannon, unlike its San Andreas and Liberty City counterparts.

The lack of proper static lighting in so many cutscenes is still damn annoying. I like the dynamic lighting in the open world, but it's not worth the price of most cutscenes in interiors, shaded areas and at night time looking like this.

I tried the same mission at daytime and the difference wasn't much better.

GSG as usual misunderstanding how things work. Fake lights are necessary sometimes.

Funny how they created unnecessary fake lighting in CJ's house and most of the interiors but not in the f*cking cutscenes is ridiculous as sh*t

I haven't watched the video yet, but I'm glad the top comment is a list of some general gameplay issues still plaguing the DE (SA specifically) from Joshimuz, a well-known GTA speedrunner (as opposed to fanboys cheering that the games are "finally, completely fixed, you guize!"):

Quote

As a speedrunner for the original GTA:SA (and general GTA games), I can fill in the gaps gameplay wise: There's still a lot missing in the latest update.

The movement/controls are still very wrong, stuff like not being able to move while aiming rockets/sniper rifle, having physics freak out in car crashes sometimes, or just car handling in general being very inaccurate to the OG. Swimming is still agonisingly slow, and sky diving is still way too fast, both of which all stem from the game running above 30 FPS without all the frame rate dependant physics being fixed. For god sake you still just yeet hay bales into the next town over whenever you drive into them instead of them exploding into lots of pieces like they do in OG. The further into the game you play the more you realise it's still bad. Los Santos is the most polished, but play past San Fierro and the game really starts to fall apart. You still cannot control the camera inside aircraft, it's just locked to the Horizon. "Accelerate" in Helicopters still makes them lean forwards instead of going up (like ya know, accelerating the engine would?) and unless you wanna unbind W from accelerate in every other vehicle you can't fix that through settings/rebinding. There's so many more things.

Overall the update is good, a big step in the right direction, but for me to consider this the "definitive" edition of the game they'd had to fix a lot more stuff.

I just bought this a couple days ago for my xbox one and can't get any of the 3 games to launch. I've did every bit of trouble shooting I know and no help. It sucks. I only payed $3.98 for it since I already had $20.01 gift card credit in my Microsoft account for free from earning points. I just can't figure out why none of them will launch. They all just show the 1st picture in the load screen and then they boot me out back to the XB home screen. Really annoying after a couple days of trouble shooting.

I've also heard this is an issue for PS4 owners as well If I remember correctly. You might be able to find someone having the same issue on Reddit and Maybe someone found a way to resolve the issue.

I've been looking into things (reading posts different places & watching videos) the past couple days and so far anything mentioned anywhere has not helped. All the trouble shooting I know for Xbox has not helped either. I'll still be looking for more info but I honestly think I've tried everything there is to do. ☹️

I'm not sure what he's talking about there. The handling.cfg hasn't been touched at all, and I haven't had any physics issues with car crashes.

I'm sorry to hear that. Do you possibly have to much downloaded? Before you play a game on Xbox I know if you don't have enough storage it won't launch. As it will take more storage for a game when it launches for the first time. If you haven't played these games before yet and Your storage is really low I'd try deleting something and Launch the games again to see if that works. I've had this problem before.

1st of all thanks for trying to help me. 😎 I still have over 120GB left on my storage, so plenty of space. I did a full cleanup of my system earlier this year by completely resetting the console and deleting everything on it and clearing the cache and making it factory fresh. I've done all the things recently doing a basic system reset but didn't delete all my games this time, clearing cache, removing and re-adding my profile, resetting my wifi connection, clearing all local saves, reinstalling the games, and making sure that the system is up to date, etc. I'd hate to have to delete all my games again since it's a long process getting them all back on. I honestly think it's the game/games themselves since all other games and everything else works as it should. Just curious if anyone else has had this issue here on the XB1 and if so, what was their solution, if they ever found one.

The 30FPS/Fidelity Mode frame pacing issues have finally been fixed, according to the DF video! Only current-gen consoles seem to have been tested, but I imagine it would be the same for 8th Gen/Switch, too.

I mean that's cool,  but I wouldn't wanna play at 30 fps. Shame Performance mode is so blurry when playing PS4 version on PS5.

Switch is far from stable 30fps

I have, many times in all 3 games, especially in San Andreas. If you hit cars at the right angle and speed they will spin around like a beyblade.

Also, as of the last update at least they have touched handling.cfg...

Handling.cfg

TractionLoss has been changed for the following vehicles:

  • Bike: From 0.95 to 0.9
  • Moped: From 0.95 to 0.9
  • Dirtbike: From 1.19 to 0.9
  • Angel: From 0.91 to 0.86
  • Freeway: From 0.87 to 0.82

PercentSubmerged has been changed for the following vehicles:

  • Reefer: From 8 to 15

SuspensionForceLevel has been changed for the following vehicles:

  • RCBaron: From 2.5 to 1.6

SuspensionUpperLimit has been changed for the following vehicles:

  • Angel: From 0.02 to 0.09
  • Freeway: From 0.02 to 0.09

SuspensionLowerLimit has been changed for the following vehicles:

  • Angel: From 0.02 to 0.11
  • Freeway: From 0.02 to 0.11
  • RCBaron: From 2.5 to 1.6

Seaspar was removed from the Handling.cfg file.

These changes seem like they were mostly made to make bikes less "slidy", which itself is done to work around framerate issues as bikes are more likely to spin out at 60 FPS because it gives everything less traction. Just another example of a bandaid fix from hardworking professionals.

  • Realistic Steak! 4

Yeah, framerate absolutely still affects way too many things. I had to go all the way down to 30 to make certain checkpoint challenges, like the Landstalker dirt course in VC, less likely to f*ck me over when it comes to vehicle physics. Cars just flip way too easily at 100+ FPS, and they catch fire much faster when flipped. Vehicle deformation also felt like it happened more often in III, though I think that's half intended, half framerate-induced.

I thought the whole point of even having a 100, 120, 144 and unlocked FPS options was that they fixed sh*t like this for good. But I guess bandaid fix is exactly right.

NightmanCometh96

I'm alternating between achievements + starter save runs in both the DE and PCSX2 versions of GTA III, although I won't be grabbing every single one in the latter. There's no way I'm putting out 20 consecutive fires, completing all 12 Paramedic levels and dropping off 35 Taxi fares in a row in Shoreside with those strict time limits (and I'd probably roll the vehicles over if I took the Unique Stunt shortcuts, anyway). More importantly, I swear the Dodo physics are borked in the DE. On PS2, I can consistently fly it high enough to reach the hidden package on the lift bridge, whereas in the DE, it almost never gets that high; in general it just seems way more difficult to stay in the air than it already was in the original. Just wanted to get that off my chest...

I'm not talking about the broken M/KB flight controls in the DE, I'm well-aware that that has been an issue since 2021. I've been using a Dualsense in both versions. EDIT: I even tested the DE with the Classic control scheme, just to make sure my inputs are similar between both versions. It didn't help at all.

Spoiler

And yes, even if I weren't playing each version side-by-side, it's no contest: I vastly prefer the originals. For anyone on the fence, as nice as it is to have VGD's fixes on all platforms, you're not really missing out if you don't play the DE (and if you do have any interest, wait until the next sub-$30 sale. It's not worth anything near the full price tag).

Edited by NightmanCometh96

Honestly just wish we had a version of all 3 games that's closest to PS2 in terms of visuals/art style, but made as modern as possible. Stuff like res fixes, framerate dependency fixes, added achievements and the checkpoint/instant mission retry from DE. Know you can probably mod some of this stuff into the PC version, but the fact that we'll never have a "modernized classics" re-release of the 3D era hurts a lot.

Looking at how much love they've given games like Dark Forces and The Thing, I wish Rockstar talked to Nightdive about potentially spearheading a slightly less ambitious, but much more faithful and technically competent redo of these games. Then again, I'm sure they're overbooked as hell.

I enjoyed my time with patched up DE just because it's still GTA, but I get pretty frustrated with what remains unfixed (and uncertain if it will ever be fixed) when I actually sit down and think about it. I got 100% on III and VC so far, waiting on potentially more fixes before I do SA. But once I complete that and have all achievements + 100% on all 3? I just don't see myself ever coming back to DE the way I came back to the OGs. Even the unmodded PC releases pre-DE.
