RDR Switch has a Noticeable Visual Issue

Recommended Posts

So recently I got myself RDR on the Switch, however shortly after playing I noticed something that appeared a bit... off. Particularly when compared to all other console editions of the game. All foliage and flora seem to have a broken dithering effect on them, making them all look a bit grainy and a bit ugly. Though I am very well aware that the Nintendo Switch hardware is inferior to that of the PS4 and I also understand using a different dithering method to save performance, but the Switch has been proven that it could support RDR at a full 60fps in handheld mode when hacked. There is no way that a dithering effect would decrease the game's performance to such a drastic amount that they couldn't use another better dithering technique on the Switch. While the dithering isn't as bad in handheld mode the issue is still very much present, the dithering effect does not scale with resolution. Allow me to provide some screenshots to show what I'm talking about, though it is far more apparent in motion so I will be providing a YouTube video as well.

In a static screenshots it may not look so bad, but is considerably more noticeable in motion. Pay a close look at all of the flora, trees in the distance are especially intrusive. Every single YouTube video of Switch game play I have seen has this, it is absolutely not just me.

Alright, so apparently this visual issue is NOT exclusive to the Switch port of RDR. The transparency artifacting is also visible on the PS4 version of the game when using FXAA, but not when using FSR 2.

It’s a problem, but honestly not a huge one. Notice that the rest of the foliage at that distance is fine. Overall I’m impressed by the visual quality of this port.

I will admit that it's impressive that the Switch can play the game in 60fps(when hacked) in handheld mode.
