Red Dead Redemption Out Now on PS4 / 5 and Nintendo Switch!

Recommended Posts

The Red Dead Redemption port is now available on PS4 and 5, and the Nintendo Switch.

Over the past week we've been able to get our hands on it, and we have a small article highlighting the experience. It is indeed what it says on the tin, it's a port of the original game to more modern platforms, the same RDR that everyone knows and loves from 2010, but it does have a few options added, alongside some bug fixes versus the original (no more headless zombies!).

Check it out:

Basically the very same game, just running on the other hardware. Did you experienced any performance troubles, slowdowns?

Very interesting to see the inclusion of AMD FSR2 and FXAA options in the display menu. Tells me a PC port might happen, especially if this game sells well which (it's trending on the store) seems to be the direction this is going in.

I'll probably buy this when it's on sale so I can finally play it again. It's worth noting, for all the bluster about how expensive this is for a simple port, it's cheaper than the MGS collection that is coming out next week.

MGS Collection has like 5 games man...

Really makes no sense to keep it locked to 30 fps when it runs almost no issues at 120 fps on Xenia. They did 60 fps modes for GTA V on RAGE and Trilogy remasters on UE4 but no in 13 year old RDR port. Makes no sense for me.

It's really just 3 games (the Metal Gear games have been included with Snake Eater since the PS3 port) and they're all considerably older than RDR.

TRILOGY Remaster was 3 broken 20 year old games at $60. Rockstar is not any better than Konami.

Ok. I'm not really arguing one way or the other, just pointing something out. I definitely didn't try and say Rockstar were better than anyone else.

Rich from Digital Foundry was saying he sees no reason not to have 60 fps mode on PS4 Pro that would work flawlessly at 60 on PS5 in backwards compatibility.  He will be dissapointed like me. It was 100% possible but they did not do it...

I didn't play it myself because I'm on PC (R* pls find a way to get this on PC), but as far as I've heard there were no slowdowns or performance issues, the article also says it was smooth and stable for those who played it. There's other reviews and previews online that seem to say the same, including for the Switch version:

Other than the pricing being really high (it's an industry-wide problem in this current year, really) it seems to be a very solid port including on the Switch which means those who wanna play it on the go or have never played the game will have a smooth experience.

The lack of 60fps is what disappoints me the most, over the years as remake and remaster rumors were circulating I always said as much as I’d love a remake using RDR2’s assets I’d be happy with a basic remaster as long as it had higher resolution and frame rate bumped to  60fps. They couldn’t even do that.

It’s also $70 CAD, f*cking hell.

120fps on what specs? Lmaooo

Edit: I'm surprised this runs as well as it does on the switch while also looking this crisp, surely there's a chance for a gta 5 port on the switch.

Not too many comparisons out there yet but it seems to be holding a 30 FPS lock on Switch at 1080p (docked) and 720p (handheld), which is quite impressive optimisation work by Double Eleven I'd say, considering it's a port from a 2010 PS3/360 game in such a wildly different architecture.

DigitalFoundry did get a code after all - we did, and so did many other creators and fan pages, so I found it weird when they said they didn't in the podcast lol, but they did. Although they wish more had been done, they praise the stability and minor improvements in shadows (likely due to rendering code changes to run on the PS4 and Switch). They say they didn't spot a single dropped frame on PS4 which also matches what we saw on PS5.

They also claim improved image quality over Xbox BC in the article.

By all accounts it's an absolutely rock solid port and D11 did their job just fine, which bolds well for the inevitable GTA IV port which I also assume will be by them.

It's just nothing to be excited about if you've already played RDR1, there's no real reason to go back cause the improvements aren't big enough, no 60fps and the price is high.

Hopefully this comes to PC sooner or later.
