[V] Pre-Millennium Radio Add-on

Get your over-designed and tacky windbreakers out. It's Pre-Millennium Radio.

spacer.png

This mod is a fan's interpretation of what the cut P.M.R station from GTA V could've entailed. It's completely add-on. No existing station or music has been replaced. This originally was meant to be an optional mod for my V Airwaves mod (which you should still check out), but once more work went into it, I felt it was worthy enough for a stand-alone release. The mod still is fully compatible with V Airwaves.

Pre-Millennium Radio is an unequivocal celebration of the A and B-sides of 90s rock, featuring a lengthy but uncompromising 76-song tracklist, to ensure you'll always find something new to listen to once you tune in. It's a station that is sure to not grow old anytime soon.

P.M.R is an eclectic mix of alternative rock, grunge, britpop, industrial rock, shoegaze, baggy, rap rock, post-hardcore, nu-metal, indie, pop rock, dream pop, math rock, pop/skate punk, slacker rock and hard rock - from the chart toppers that have immortalized the 90s such as Nirvana, Radiohead, RHCP, Alice in Chains, My Bloody Valentine, Weezer, Beck, Blur and The Foo Fighters - to the widely beloved indie darlings à la Liz Phair, Pavement, Stereolab, Dinosaur Jr, Teenage Fanclub, Modest Mouse, Slint and Ween - and a small number of obscure but highly talented acts who never received their due. From smash hits to underground curiosities, it's accessible, familiar - yet also laden with many surprises.

And who will be the one to supplement this bask of musical deja-vu?

It's Badger Goodger! He voices PMR's unnamed, financially insecure, slightly nihilistic yet reasonably sound DJ host. He has over 250 unique lines of dialogue, written by both me and Badger. We made sure the dialogue melded well with the absurdist and satirical nature of GTA V's writing, whilst also still being grounded enough to sound believable. To an extent, that is. We also made sure all of the dialogue was lore-friendly. Locations of bands are referred to by their in-universe counterparts, and a small handful of references have also been made to several in-universe products to further help sell the idea of this being an actual radio station broadcasting to the state of San Andreas.

Each song has one to three uniquely track-specific intro lines (135 introductory lines in total), with 39 unspecific song intros and outros, the DJ goes on lengthy tangents about a variety of topics; the novelty (and dangers) of VHS, shoe bombers, climate denialism, the current state of music, the increasing antiquity of radio, the smoke and mirrors of tourism marketing, and far more. The host has morning, afternoon, evening, and night comments, and informs listeners of incoming ad and news breaks. The real deal! The station features its own bumpers as well, which were quite fun to make.

And all this clocks in at a meager 800 MB.

All of the songs were sourced from FLAC rips, and have been normalized to consistent audio levels.

Badger Goodger for being so kind as to lend his voice to this project, co-writing the dialogue, and doing additional QA.

Also a major thanks to Wildbrick142, as this station couldn't have been possible without Brick's research. An extra thank you to the developers of OpenIV and Codewalker.

Thanks to Ash_735 for creating the thumbnail for the preview video.

Enjoy, people! September's just around the corner....

Can you also restore the Nightride FM and Santos Surf radio stations? The tracklist of Nightride FM can be like this

Or

(And I like it) The Santos Surf tracklist can be like this

Or

But I noticed that on the English wiki Nightride FM is not mentioned in the list of cut radio stations from GTA V, so is it fake or not?

By the way, I want to publish this together with https://gtaforums.com/topic/991904-v-airwaves on Nexus Mods, but only if the Santos Surf radio station is restored, I know that I can probably create it myself, but it will take me time to figure it out, and also how do I add songs to TrackID? Because their hash does not match in OpenIV, for example, the word A$AP ROCKY has a hash of 0x3BBD2AC9 in TrackID, but if I use the hash generator that is present in OpenIV, then the hash will not match, that is, if you type A$AP ROCKY in OpenIV, then the hash will be 0xADD6262E, or does it not matter?

No, as I'm not doing any more GTA modding in the future. Someone else in the community already is doing Santos Surf, however.

Amazing mod, good work.

Could you update hud.gfx for latest game version ?

I asking because in Mercenary DLC was added Tactical SMG.
Your hud.gfx file it's older and when i use it Tactical SMG doesn't have weapon hud icon.

I know without hud.gfx PMR will not work.

Hope you update it and make it more better.

You don't need hud.gfx for radio mods to work, you will only be lacking icons but the radio will be visible and play without issues

The latest update for P.M.R is here, coinciding with the newest update for Airwaves. This update ensures compatibility with the new version of Airwaves, whilst also fixing some inconsistencies.

PMR Update 1.1 Changelog:

Spoiler

- hud.gfx updated to the latest version
- Fixed a typo within the TrackID
- Fixed a syntax issue that resulted in a small number of songs not showing up on the radio wheel before tuning in
- Lowered the audio to Leave Them All Behind
- Compatibility with the latest version of Airwaves

Looks like LSUR's radio icon has now been replaced with The Lab's.

That's interesting. Looking into this rn

Edit: Ok so.. I don't know what kind of funky sh*t Rockstar pulled, but every time I try and edit the Mercenaries hud.gfx, that happens. I hadn't catched onto it before as I had online radio stations disabled when I initially tested. I've modified the hud.gfx twice using the same method I've always used and it still happens. I dunno. I guess just use old hud.gfx for now till I find a solution

Hi @girlsonfilm, would you please explain what the various "RadioMusic" & "RadioTrackEvents" in the dat151.rel file refer to? I'm trying to figure out how to make my own station for some DnB/Jungle mixes, but I dont get what these 2 items are supposed to be doing

Your first "RadioMusic" entry seems to dictate the playlist of all the actual songs, but what are the other 2 for? Advertisements?

Thanks!

Outstanding work. I'm creating fan/custom/alternate radio mixes myself, and I can barely imagine how much time you've spent to put everything together and actually make it work organically in the game. Voiceovers are spot on, kudos to BG.

As much as I love LSRR and VBR (and Channel X, but maybe not as much as the previous two) the game terribly lacks some late 80s and 90s alt rock. To me, PMR could've been the perfect sequel to SA's Radio X. A shame it was scrapped during development.

For the folks craving for even more tracks, here's a complementary list I've made:

Unfortunately, I don't have the modding skills to make a mod out of all this, so what I do is just downloading the tracks and simply put 'em in my Self Radio folder (not the best solution but I guess that's better than nothing). For listenings outside of the game, I've made radio mixes (which blend the tracks together a bit, but no DJ banters).

Though if someone wants to make a mod out of this list (maybe not including all of these tracks cuz that's a lot) go ahead I'll obviously be the first to support it lol.

well.. how do i install it? can i use this in GTA Online too?

usually i don't care about this boring game, but your mod may finally add some flavor to the unremarkable soundtrack V has... and boy i couldn't even believe my favorite narrator is the host of this station! amazing work, really gonna enjoy it alongside your "Airwaves" mod for my next playthrough!

It's all the worldbuilding missing from V that breaks it IMO.

Everything seems to be there to check a box, rather than to make the game better.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong here but I can't get this to work.

I have a clean install (v1.0.2944.0) with just ASILoader/OpenIV.asi and the PMR .oiv (v1.1). I have tried installing to both the game files and the mods folder, and it made no difference, the .oiv package seems to install without issue, but there is no new station in the radio station wheel. I have also increased the order value in setup2.xml with no results.

Any advice? For reference, right before this I tried installing PMR with Airwaves too and Airwaves was working fine.

Nevermind the other guy. You technically could use it in online, but you need bypasses etc. And it's a pain to get them and then play w/o getting detected.
