GTA on Steam

So I got a steam key with all the GTA games 1 through IV. I only did this to play 1 and 2. GTA2 runs well but GTA1 is super laggy. I see everyone saying to just press f11 to change the resolution. I am on a laptop and my f11 key just lowers the brightness. Is there another way to change the resolution in game? Sorry, I’m an idiot when it comes to PC games.

Does your laptop have an Fn key? If it does hold that down and press F11.

Thank you very much. This worked to change my resolution. Unfortunately the game still runs horribly. Not sure what’s wrong with it.

Try the GTA Max Pack or the GTA Ready2Play edition. They should run correctly on modern PCs and dpn't have the glitches that the Steam/Rockstar Classics version has (incorrect radio, no music on title screen, save file corruption). You get save states with the former and 30fps (instead of the original 24fps) with the latter. If you want to use the Steam version is it running at 1024x768x32? For some reason the 16-bit colour mode has massive slowdown on modern PCs, so for example 1024x768x16 wouldn't work properly.

Yeah the steam one was running at that resolution. I tried all the available resolutions but if I choose any from the right column, the screen is just black. Turning off the frame limiter didn’t help either. I’m gonna try that ready to play version today.

That was the same on my old PC. It works perfectly on my current one in 32-bit colour. It’s weird, the original Windows version of GTA 1 works randomly on some modern PCs but not others. This goes for the 1997 retail version and the Rockstar Classics/Steam version. I guess that’s what happens with older games like it.

The Ready2Play edition should work fine though.

Isn't it free on Rockstar's website?

I ended up getting the Ready2Play version that I found here on the forums. Appreciate the help though 👍
