THEME & TRAILER

By the 80s, Vice is the murder city, Liberty is the worst city, and Bi-Town? Not even a city, it is a warzone.

Delve into the untouched Midwest America’s most diverse metropolis in the eighties. The city may have statistically improved after a period of deadliest years and riots, but a surge in violent crimes is inevitable as street syndicates become more organized under the banner of two nations. Civil societies have united to address the perilous situation. Government has taken the drastic measure of enforcing strict gun laws. But the latter only brings in a new issue of illegal arms trading, deeper underneath. From open streets to rusty housings, the sun doesn’t always shine in Brannigan.

BLOODSALES sets in a HD Universe reimagining of Chicago and surrounding areas. This is a period piece with a narrative span from 1984 to 1988. The world is inspired largely by actual news footage, documentaries, writings, and fictions featuring Chi-Town’s past, such as The Blues Brothers, Thief, Bad Boys, and Lady Blue. Various real-life historical events are also slightly adapted, referenced, and twisted for creative direction.

Basic gameplay is reworked to appropriately reflect the time setting, and to offer the same realism level as Red Dead Redemption II. New features include payphone for communications, physical newspaper as internet’s substitute, classic automobiles, and an emphasis on period-correct firearms, accompanying a complex arms dealing simulator.

You play the role of one aspiring gunrunner, expecting life improvements with the arsenal-for-sale on the back of his car. Go fuel the underworld’s endless frictions for dollars. But beware: you’re selling both bullets and bloods.

In loving memory of Austin Stoker (1930-2022). For the author, one of the most undeservingly underrated actors of the 70s.

The 35-years-old NATHAN "WILL" WILKINS is cool, cautious, calculative, and never letting illogical ideals control him.

The Wilkins family were middle-class merchants and activists, having fled Tequesta to Brannigan. Father Robert, “Robbie” by everyone, was an industrial trucker going in-and-out the state. An overprotective gentleman smart enough to secure a spot in the heart of city’s trading: Higgins Street. It’s a small, two-storey store building. Second floor where Will lived a joyful childhood with soldier toys and homeschooling, first floor where Ma Grace run a dinner.

Will was never exposed much to gang life outside, but his parents exposed him to American political reality. Robbie was an admirer of reformist Louis Leonard, and was part of his Heroic League of People (HELP) in Kennicott. Grace is a philanthropist who feeds poorer family around West Side every Friday, and has a close ties with civil organizations. They messaged Will to “always fight for a better life”. The kid himself marched in civil right protests and brawled against anyone with racist mouth.

At 23, Robbie introduced Will to Nolan Jackson‘s Ammu-Nation store nearby. He gets a faithful job as a salesman, and grows a new passion in firearms. Jackson only served harmless families who needed protection and private securities, Robbie knew it. Will never fired to kill, until some gangsters attempted to hijack his load in C-Town.

Robbie was killed in 1980 by a missed bullet, or allegedly, by an intentional assassination shooting. Grace never surrenders to discover the truth. However, Will believes the former’s theory more and keeps convincing his Ma’. Although Grace occasionally asks his son’s assistance for her social duty, their relationship has been fragile since then.

GAMEPLAY

Playing as Will is similar to playing as Arthur Morgan. Four cores impact his gameplay. Eat and sleep regularly to maintain health. Do sport-related activities to maintain stamina. Partake in melee combat to keep up maximum strength damage. Keep yourself cool during heavy gunfights and intense chases to keep the focus, so Will may notice interesting objects nearby and signs of dangers ahead. All cores are also affected by current outfit and any physical injury.

Jackets, barrets, and badges of gang identities can be looted from fallen gangbangers. Consider your style carefully when walking through the street: certain uniforms and colors aren’t welcomed in certain territory. Unique gang cards are also featured as collectibles, obtainable from friendly encounters and looting are kept in Will’s journal: a notebook of his personal records, contact phone numbers, or breakdown and rough sketch of specific firearms.

Last year, first black mayor Gene Luther was elected over incumbent lady Theresa Byron. Luther meets intense opposition in the City Hall. Alderman “Speedie” Rourke leads the majority 28 council members to frequently block the mayor’s legislations and appointees. But Luther manages to pull all levers for the sake of future generations. He cleans racial prejudice in the police department. He invests four million dollars for a special task force and crime prevention. He invests in community development. He advocates firearms freeze. His spokesmen and supporters boast about the life quality improvement, but for others, what exactly changed is questionable.

After decades, Will and Nolan lost the legality of their nine-to-five with the 1983 government’s ban. The staff split up. The profit tanks despite a short burst of panic buying before the ban came into effect. Nolan moves to Minoa, a small village outskirts, with Will following him.

Throughout the story, Will faces the underworld, an alien environment that may break his bones and temper. It’s your job to never let Will’s mind get out of control.

WINTER, 1984-85

Unfazed by the freezing temperature, Will and Nolan deliver crates to a man in an abandoned mill near Gallagher, who uncloaks himself as head of local syndicate and double crosses them. The pair escape the botched deal and drive back to Minoa with a freshly stolen car. Learning from the mistake, Will surveys the rural Baker County and cross-checks Nolan's customers, ranging from hunters to serious criminals. New friends and enemies are made along the way. Will bonds with the young prince of Inouk Lost MC's branch, Paul "Proud" Shaddock.

As Nolan's business snowballs, it draws the unwanted attention of vicious FEAT agent, Harvey Calvelli. In a climatic event, Calvelli's armored unit besieges Minoa's office, forcing Will and Nolan to relocate elsewhere.

SUMMER, 1985

Nolan restarts in a wrecked apartment in South Brannigan. Tribe and Pilgrims Nations have heard about his reputation in Baker County,  and Nolan intends to cash in both alliances. He knows the challenge, so he assembles the old Ammu-Nation team with Will's help: "Sharp" Harper, Alvaro Jimenez, and Dorothy Watson; and adds a new employee in "Jude" Dunbar. As the lead merchant, Will interacts with the convoluted politics of Tribe and Pilgrims Nations: their territorial wars, internal feuds, and drug trades. The inhospitable nature of the Southside region eventually forces Nolan to move again.

Around the same time, Will helps Proud establishing a new Lost MC's chapter in the West Side. He also reunites with Ma Grace, despite her lukewarm emotion to her son, and enters her civil society side, which can be something beneficial for Nolan's business.

FALL, 1986

The business continues to skyrocket. Nolan has repurchased his old Ammu-Nation outlet. He converts it into a base of his gunrunning operation, covering it with blankets of a record shop downstairs and an insurance company upstairs. Storing and delivering phases are now assisted by a private waste company, Clean & Green Brannigan (C&GB). His reach has now been extended to non-Black syndicates such as the Irish Mob, the Chinese Tong, and the Mexican Cartel. Finally, he is defended by one of the best lawyer in the city, Landon Dutton. Life is good, isn't it?

However, Will notices early degradations in Nolan's character; his father figure seems to be consumed by greed, pride, wrath, basically all seven deadly sins. He fears the worst.

Meanwhile, Proud's father forms a partnership with the Trenchcoats, and Ma Grace's influence as a community figurehead grows. For the latter, Will takes advantage of people around her, using them to cover his and Nolan's footprints.

SPRING, 1987

From a new house in Northside, Nolan controls his growing empire and crosses with two powerful rivals: an Italian internationally-acclaimed arms dealer named Enrico Cardona, and El Amud's elusive North African terrorist connection. He now intends to eliminate the market competition. One manuever is to ensure the victory of Speedie, an opposition to Gene's gun freeze policy, in the upcoming mayoral election. As usual, Will is launched into the field with Matthew Quirk, a senior assassin with experience of manipulating the city's government scene. Who knows if he also finally solve his father's death? Can it prevent the history from repeating on Ma Grace?

Nolan's power craze keeps worrying Will. His reckless decisions to stay on top, like using an outsider Pegorino Family to dispose Enrico, is threatening the business. Will shares his concern to Proud, who seeks a similar reformation in the Lost MC due to his father's rise of prominence.

WINTER, 1987-88

Gene has been re-elected, but passes away out of blue few months into his second term. Nolan denies the accusation that he is involved. He focuses more on steadying a sinking ship. Crack epidemic begins spreading in Brannigan. The law and community counter the volatile street with more proactive measures. It hits Nolan's business like a tidal wave. Police raid his fronts, and gangs empty his stash houses. His co-workers flee and die one by one. His newest business partner, Archie Fontaine of Hawk & Little, betrays and robs his house, seizing every dollar in his safe. Nolan orders Will to avenge Archie and recover his money.

Will calls Nolan after the task is fulfillled, but Nolan's words reveal that he wants the money himself for his retirement, inheriting Will the ruins of his empire and dozens of unsorted problems. Will makes up his mind. He confronts Nolan and ultimately kills him.

The decade is more than atypical new wave and hair metal.

Brannigan is among the epicenters of Western musical scene. Unique form of blues has had a provenance in Higgins since the 1950s. Post-Disco develops after disco destruction in Venatio Park. Earliest works of house music are formulated by local clubs’ DJs.

Every radio station’s tracklist is updated every two story years, producing three different playlists: 1984, 1986, and 1988. The sound also evolves. Windy B diverts from funk & soul to contemporary R&B. The Vault branches to stylistic variants of electronic genre such as acid house, deep house, and techno. Commando switches to industrial as underground’s punk bands change or break up.

Tune in by taking a car ride or visiting a music store. Invest in Sumo audio players and tapes to dance while walking. Customize your properties with portable radio, jukebox, or vinyl player.

Next to Lake Muscoden, in BAKER COUNTY of the STATE OF INOUK, is one of America’s largest cities named BRANNIGAN with three million populations by the 1980 census.

Here was where world’s first skyscrapers rose from a burning gambling paradise. A rebuild after the great fire in late 19th century was followed by a bright period. A showcase of humanity’s wishful future was held in the world fair. People migrated from around the world for a better life. Economy flourished.

After easy times, come difficult times. The early years of Brannigan’s crime infamy began with loose gangs from immigrants. The Italians then imported Camorra’s black-hand extortion practice in 1900. Post-World War prohibition gave them an opportunity for profitable rum-running. Enter the most archetypal mobster in history, Aurelio ‘Arnie’ Valentino, who painted the city red and made his syndicate an empire.

What really escalated the status from bad to worse arrived en masse in 1950s and 60s. More Black and Latino flooded the city. Discrimination was still high those days; the white residents fled elsewhere whenever people of color waved hands as their new neighbors. Realtors dropped blockbusting in undesirable parts of city. Banks  redlined access to financial service. It was clear they weren't welcomed by the city.

Mayor Caleb Bailey Sr. was a landlord himself. He proposed housing projects to them as promised paradises, a place where society would thrive. He started superhighway constructions in 1958 to politely force and lock them inside these bottom-rent residentials. The plan backfired. Crime rate soared. Gangs were racism fighters, political movements, and community protectors back then. They had lost all credibility.

The city’s image further corrodes for violent incidents: King’s riot and Democratic Convention in 1968; raid on Black Vanguard Party in 1969; 1977 Hutzler Park riot; and 1979 Disco Destruction night. Homicides spiked to a record 970 in 1974; and averaged at 800 the following years. Bailey Sr. might have been credited for making Brannigan only half as bad as Carcer during the rust-belt decline. But throughout his long 21 years of mayoral tenure, more often he mishandled social conflicts. It continued with his successor, Theresa Byron, first female mayor who attacked his “evil cabals” before being sucked into his political machine.

Trust in law departments plummeted. The Manufacturing sector shrinked and left wastelands down south. One in five residents lived below the poverty line.

The eighties is statistically not as severe, but the old gang problem grows increasingly convoluted. Last decade, the police had cracked down senior mentors to weaken their street gangs. This only leads to disintegration, creation of more gangs with careless younger generations who’re only after money, intoxication, and masculine superiority. Major “supergangs” with dozens of branches around are also evolving into more proper criminal organizations, into the new Brannigan mobs.

In 1980, Brannigan is one culturally diverse melting pot. South Side is dominantly African-American. West Side is browns (Mexicans and Puerto Ricans). North Side is mostly white with Polish and German spices. Various enclaves embellishes the city, from Irish to Chinese, from Ukrainian to Vietnamese, from Greeks to Indians. Be ready to get lost in translations when communicating.

The city will progress throughout the story. Certain places are gentrified or decayed. New business opens, old business closes down. For example, West Loop’s skid road is replaced with the construction site of Kingsmen Towers from 1985 to 1986 when it’s completed.

Important to note that there are too many stories in Chicago to cover at once. Playable area doesn’t cover the entire Northern Illinois. The map is partially landlocked, bordered by impassable rivers in west and south. Crossing the river bridges leads to a fade-to-black, then a brief cutscene of Will returning to a nearby spot. Going off limit with pursuing gang behind or stars on head, however, respectively leads to instant death or police bust.

3-1-Central.png

Outsiders don’t think of the miserable environment when talking about Brannigan. They imagine the pleasant image of central that’s promoted heavily in postcards. THE CIRCUIT is the downtown where all railroad network intersects. Take a walk along Golden Milestone and witness the grandeur urban canyon of VAUDEVILLE. The two neighborhoods are connected by multiple drawbridges above the Brannigan River, dyed green every March. Along the riverside one can visit the art galleries of FLORIST DISTRICT.

Central Brannigan hosts many media firms, fancy hotels, luxury brand shops, government offices, and landmarks. Notable examples: the historic theatre with its iconic marquee; the expressionist Willard Theron Center; and the cathedral-like Wainwright Building and Acta Tower. Nothing is more remarkable, however, than the record-breaking Wheeler Tower. Move aside, Liberty City, kids will never think of Algonquin tomorrow.

Although the Naval Pier amusement park is closed and forgotten after the boycotted BranniganFest, entertainment amenities are available in BURTON PARK. It has the Whiskerville Place, a vast convention center for city-backed exhibitions; the Heroic Field, home of Brannigan Grizzly pro football team; a man-made peninsula with a small regional airport; and a public marina to save purchased boats.

However, Central has its own fair share of shady areas. A step away from Vaudeville is an inequality monument known as CALABRIA-GOULD, the city's largest housing project. DENT PARK was once a proud attraction, now in a state of disrepair with broken fountains, trash, dying vegetation, and greasers bullying unlucky passersby. In its northwest is one large area of parking lots and rail yards which are prone to carjackers. The PRUSSIAN TOWN is a flamboyant red-light district under the Trenchcoats influence. Near south CHINATOWN is the lair of Chinese Tongs and street gangs. PROXIMA is where Brannigan’s oldest, antiquated houses with priceless loots are located. Security there has been tighter in response to the rising burglary rate. Beneath the Circuit also lies a complex abandoned freight tunnel system; wonder what’s down there.

3-2-West.png

Construction of the UNIVERSITY OF INOUK BRANNIGAN (UIB) and Bauer Expressway has been disturbing for the west side. The once peaceful multicultural region is divided. Should they be satisfied with a state-of-the-art college and medical center? or should they be enraged with their displacement? LITTLE ITALY shrinks to a small block with a few bakeries, restaurants, brickhouses, a gentleman club, and a public apartment. HIGGINS STREET isn’t as spacious as before, but remains a busy market selling everything from imported techs to drug paraphernalias to Blues performers. A wholesome anomaly amidst the racial conflicts around. WEST CIRCUIT is undergoing reconstruction so students won’t be vomited with a land of living dead; they’ll instead find nightclubs such as The Vault, National Greek Museum, company offices, and loft condos.

The construction spices this region with a little too much of Hispanic’s taste. PRAHA becomes an epicenter of Mexicans, as they live in Bohemian houses, celebrate Día de los Muertos every year, and struggle with high unemployment rate. Meanwhile, Puerto Ricans settle in HUTZLER PARK, which has a history of riots and gang formation. The impact is felt in nearby urban area of C-TOWN, territorial gang wars make it a “chaos-town”. Latino also takes over ALGREN, a Polish neighborhood. Many factories there have been abandoned, perfect for vandals, pimps, and artists. One location in particular, however, is cloistered from surrounding demography shift: LITTLE ODESSA, owned by Catholic and Orthodox Slavs, largely Ukrainian.

In other areas, only a handful of white residents that can’t afford flight are armed-to-teeth to face the changing world. They blockade further African-American visitors in ALVIN, now their heroin super highway filled with deteriorated landmarks. In HOVE HEIGHTS, white gangs like Tyler Paladins keep latino out. The white still able to watch hockey games in BRANNIGAN ARENA, though avid fans are recommended to not travel alone.

3-3-North.png

North side is a relatively safer region of Brannigan: fresher air, sturdier buildings, more considerate society and lesser gang activities. Two are extreme exceptions. PANORAMA streets can be fairly violent outside of Brannigan Boys’ matchday. MOHANY PARK, named after its earliest investor hometown in Mohany, State of Liberty, is a parade of red flags: small-time delinquent groups and prostitution stables in deserted buildings. Latest gossip gratefully says that the recent influx of Korean immigrants plan to redeem the area.

Some other neighborhoods also have a chunk of area which is contested between gangs. However, most people are always-ready, always-armed individuals. Gangsters are forced to localize within their own limited comfort zone, like what’s happened in the Cliffton project in NORTH CENTRAL, and outside the European-styled colleges of SIMON PARK.

West side’s Hispanics expand. BOOTH PARK becomes the lion’s den, center of Puerto Rican civil right discourses. SILVESTER SQUARE, thick with religious atmosphere as indicated by churches like Nordic Mindekirken, gets socially neglected as war between white and brown gangs ensues. DOLAN turns into a communist-centric meeting point for Eastern European and Latino. Aside from them, another unique enclave is found in LITTLE SAIGON or the “Asia in Essanay”. A new chinatown for exiled Vietnamese who open restaurants and unlicensed clinics.

Nevertheless, the main color is still white. Germans spread all around. Polacks live alongside the Millioke Avenue in WARSZAWSKI. Sausages and pastries are served every morning. Bright street signs lead to bookstores. Czerwone plays Polish productions. St. Witzky graces the community with catholic relics. Swedes build their little Stockholm in ADAMSONVILLE: only place in Brannigan to drink glögg and to hit European girlfriends. Nearby is a density of high-rises, adjacent to the sandy Vinewood Beach. Italians, including those outcasted from UIB, reside in far northwest DUMONT-CLAIRE. It has nice manors, operational factories, and an insane asylum  that nobody wants to talk about. Russian Jews establish a Hasidic community in NORTH TOWN.

The population is predominantly middle and upper-class. They have everything. Final resting place? the city’s largest garden cemetery in WONDERLAND–could be a go-to place for Rockstar’s myth hunters. If they like cinema, they have a movie palace cluster In INDIAN PARK. If the weather’s too hot, they lay down in MONTAUK BEACH and admire Lake Muscoden’s scenery. For shopping, they walk through cobblestone-paved roads of BOOTH SQUARE to visit German shops with Asian shopkeepers and autumn fruit festivals. Richer citizens own well-preserved old houses and bungalows of Victorian splendor in MARVIN PARK, GLEN FOREST, and NOBLEWOOD.

NORTH

FAR NORTH

3-4-South.png

They call south side “fallout zone” or “the wastelands” because of its impoverished state. Residential complexes have bankrupted hard; noblemen’s dining room is left dusted and crumbled. Slums are surrounded with unnerving silence randomly interrupted with music and gunshots. Feel free to snort coke and draw shotguns in the street without law repercussions. The city built the Ron O’Connor Expressway to allow cars to safely penetrate through the urban blight. The highway teared apart neighborhoods like in DAWSON and BUELLER PARK, isolating residents from public and commercial facilities.

Industry declines. Factories are shutting down. Malls are full of closed storefronts. Gangs see these abandoned structures as holy sites. Ideal spot for cooking, meeting, and transactions. The main manufacturing zone in far north has decayed. SOUTH BRANNIGAN is a river polluted by steelworks, and Lake Camelot surrounded by mills and foundries. After a duopoly of NAG and Wagnell Global, it’s now the best representation of rust belt’s decline. Workers are laid off without pension benefits. Only a few businesses maintained a steady posture. The Sparrow Administration Building stands pretty in ugly HELENSANC.

Even in this sad region, there are few communities that are happy few. COLUMBIA gets an urban renewal to keep a high standard set by the late 19th century Universal Fair. LUKOSZAITE is still a home of many Lithuanian blue collars, no matter the Mexican’s new wave. EUGIZZI has a poor but close-knitted community in its trailer park. Irish celebrates St. Patrick’s Day with crowded parade in FINNEGAN.

SOUTH

FAR SOUTH

3-5-Projects.png

A city within a city. The projects were never calculated since the inception. Built in the middle of the ghetto without anticipating overcrowdedness, yet originally envisioned as cheap, mixed-income housing. The single agency that supervises them, the Brannigan Housing Authority (BHA), is spiraling: a combination of inept and scandalous management, corruption, and budgetary crisis. Mayor Byron once tried to live in CALABRIA-GOULD for three months to prove its safety. It’s nothing more than a publicity stunt. Meanwhile, mayor Luther dreams of demolishing the vertical slums and replacing them with military bases.

President Royce Crawford calls the BHA “the worst managed authority in the nation”, forgetting that his own Roycenomics has reduced HUD budgeting as he prefers rural housing and other programs. BHA’s budget was sharply slashed by 87% in 1987. For the sake of existence, they allocate the bank to staff and cut funding for maintenance, literally ignoring more than 30,000 resident orders, some as old as eight years. People have filed class action lawsuits, but only get unkept promises.

Financially-speaking, the most affordable housing in Brannigan. Morally-speaking, danger zones that progressively get worse everyday. The atmosphere is always suspenseful, and at night it’s straight out of a nightmarish horror movie.

The tenants and squatters are living in predicaments. In MICHAEL-JOHNSON, 90% of population are out of work, and 75% are headed by single females as men become crime victims, or disappear to evade taxmen. Different parts of a project are no man’s lands or tyrannical pockets, controlled by building presidents or gang leaders. Either way, an underground economy thrives. The residents trade food, take care of babies, and repair broken pipes, to help each other. Gang members run a lucrative drug market, and fund the regular basketball tournament. Disputes are common between opposing factions. When things get heated, guns may blaze all around on a daily basis. In BYGRAVE & BARNES, the youngest gangbangers are brave enough to shoot high powered rifles at passing police.

The projects are fully accessible multi-levels labyrinths. Depending on your relationship with who rules a certain building, you will either be greeted with free lunch or beer bottles thrown from the window. In high-rise buildings, snipers besiege the rooftops. You won’t get wanted levels while around as the BPD cruisers are too scared to patrol nearby. Residents have resorted to hiring squatters or gang members as security forces. Only few projects have licensed securities, such as the CLIFTON which houses a couple of higher-class families.

Some sides are clean and lively. But more often, dark and dirty hallways are what welcoming you. Climb up stairs to move between floors, most elevators are non-functional. Use a lighter or flashlight to explore the dimly-lighted and pitch-darkened places. Memorize the route or you’ll never leave alive. While portable phones do exist inside, who knows whether the wire has been cut.

Always stay alert while inside. Listen carefully to your surroundings. Take a different route when hearing gunshots or screams. You never know what’s happening, could it be junkies, creeps, or a supernatural slasher with a prosthetic hook. If lucky, you can find treasures like cash and weapons stashes. If you’re running out of health, chances are you’ll wake up somewhere else and must escape first. Be familiar with this hellish condition: gangsters or scared civilians will frequently expect your firearms service in their room.

3-Transportations.png

Walking from point A to B is a burden in sprawling cities like Brannigan. Everyone are always in need of a ride. Helicopters can be seen hovering in the sky, but the luxury of controlling flight machines are unavailable. Not everyone is able to fly, unfortunately the list includes Will.

Dealership sells CARS and BIKES; a full catalog will come one day hopefully. All types of four-door car with a back trunk can be optimized as Will’s personal vehicle. Any luggage stored inside, bag of firearms or deceased body, are automatically saved. Install a luxurious car phone for convenient communication. Customize land vehicles with custom colors, bodykits, bulletproof windows, or explosives in various mod garage.

Tired of driving? Call a YELLOW CAB, use a city BUS or L TRAIN. Brannigan has the second busiest third rails in America after Liberty, reliable for residents during rush-hour or petty thefts wanting to escape the cops. Six lines, elevated and underground, all lead to Downtown. Dozen train stops and numerous decayed and modern stations to visit. Trains will skip the stops that don’t match their designation: A trains only stop in point A, B trains in point B, and both in AB. They’re always available, just jump in and avoid the officers if you forget a ticket.

spacer.png

South of Brannigan is a vast rural area of Baker County, an amalgamation of mainly Cook County, Will County, and Indiana’s Lake County. Two towns and six villages with farmlands, forestlands, and metallic structures in-between.

CAPENO, attatched to Brannigan in the southwest, is rich of antique buildings and polarizing historical events. It houses a Hispanic majority and is equally impacted by its neighbor's street gang plague. GALLAGHER is in the southeast corner of the map; a symbol of social failure surrounded by mills that produce 25% of American steel. A near ghost town; it loses the "murder city" nametag because there's hardly anyone to kill.

Other notable sight of interest is a century-old panopticon in the CRESTVILLE CORRECTIONAL CENTER. Urban stories of human experiments, electric chair, and lethal injection fill up the atmosphere, intimidating new convicts from Brannigan. Another one you don't want to miss out is the 450-feet-deep SALTON QUARRY, a component of flood mitigation effort of Brannigan Deep Tunnel. A toll road crosses through the mine in the middle.

4-Characters.png

spacer.png

Primary partners-in-crime. Nolan has a couple of old-time affiliates, former staff of Higgins’ Ammu-Nation, that are still around Baker County. They have capacity; Nolan decides to procure his band members back instead of entrusting new recruits. New friends are also made along the way. Whether it’s useful assistants, someone needing assistance, or for Will only: genuine colleagues who can play darts, drink in tavern, or discuss world politics together.

spacer.png

NOLAN JACKSON (N) - Boss. Will calls his proficient manager and father figure Mr. Jackson. Cherry-picking opportunist who refuses to wave a white flag. He opts to re-open outside Brannigan’s banning zone. As unfamiliar as Will with black economy system, and comparatively a slower learner. Morally devolves from sympathizing with victimized families to trading simultaneously with protective fathers and trigger-happy gangsters.

ISAAC “SHARP” HARPER (S) - Friend. Firearms instructor in Higgins Ammu-Nation from Capeno. Now a semi-pro hitman for Black Descendants, though he secretly opens the door to cross-gang contacts under codenames. Puddle-depth street smart spawns poor track record so far, but never stops bragging about latest hits and his modus operandi. Sharp? More like blunt.

ALVARO JIMENEZ (A) - Logistician. Pursuing the American dream through a long, difficult voyage from Mexico to Praha. He eyes and grabs any job possible: butcher, technician, maintenance service in social clubs, and low-paid storage staff for Nolan, which lasts too short. Now a machinist in the Spanish Lords’ forgery factory. Uncomfortable around other Hispanics, especially gays.

DOROTHY WATSON (D) - Treasurer. Now confined in the Circuit’s Fortuity Building as an accountant for Humphrey Dalton, a Fortuity Securities Inc. executive. Overworked and intimidated to cover hideous frauds against investors and customers. A walking calculator, book-smart, can handle sticky situations herself as last line of defense, and an awful convincer.

NOAH BOYLE (B) - Rancher. Minoa’s local, embracing a countryside farming lifestyle with seven family members, including two brothers. Falling into a loan shark as they are impacted by the agricultural crisis. He resorts to illegal hunting, scavenging from abandoned factories, and assisting Nolan’s distribution to pay his family’s debt.

PAUL “PROUD” SHADDOCK (POutlaw. Son of “Southern Pete”, president of south side’s Lost MC chapter. Like Will, doctrined with political intakes by his patriotic father, though the two have opposing views such as their stances on American wars abroad. Preferring bike convoys with his obsessive old lady Brigitte over meet-ups. Loyal and reckless.

JEROME “JUDE” DUNBAR (J) - Driver. All-round mechanic who’s familiar with Robbie’s name. Also a car thief serving the Black Mambas in Bygrave & Barnes. Has a cold turkey from cocaine. Illiterate except for automotive guides or Declasse brochures. Unlike the steering wheel, cannot hold a gun steadily.

LANDON DUTTON (L) - Extraordinaire. Ted Malcolm’s trusted lawyer; one of Trenchcoat’s forefront law associates. A bribery master, ensuring his clients are acquitted or ignored by law. Disgusted by the mobs, he scans for healthier employers whilst planning to shame the Italians.

ARCHIE FONTAINE (AF) - Collector. Shrewd and desperate Hawk & Little’s broker. The manufacturer's stock tanks as police forces switch to European imports. To cover his loss, he’d provide unsold supplies of machine guns in exchange for most exotic firearms to be framed in his wall. Historical value is a plus point.

For some people, the eighties is culturally brighter, socially dimmer; not a decade to remember. Gang violence is usually only rampant in bad neighborhoods. However, other crimes from burglaries to aggravated assaults, committed by unaffiliated crooks, are also rising. They are hired mercenaries, off-the-book merchants, smugglers, mentally-damaged drug addicts, or young kids who are still bewildered on whether they make money by joining gangs or by their own hardworks.

Residents should be self-conscious to keep themselves away from walking alone outside, even in clear daylight and in safer areas. You might think this advice is to protect young women from purse snatchers or rapists. The more serious cause, however, is the recent serial killing by an unidentified ex-surgeon and satanist. On the other hand, although schools have installed metal detectors, this security measurement does not protect kids from drive-by and stray bullets from outside. Watch your kids too.

spacer.png

RONALD VAN VRANKEN Competition. Trucker turns into a cross-border contraband porter. Big guy with a wrestling and drinking game reputation. When first talks with Will, he ostensibly knows an untold dishonorable side of father Robert. Will is skeptical, but he’s sure to never tell his Ma’.

ENRICO CADORNA Warlord. Continentally-graded gun dealer from Europe. Trading exclusively to serious organized crimes and insurgents. In America to arrange a deal with The Commission chair members, including the Trenchcoats, to elude Globalpol’s agents. Comedic gentleman with a penchant for dark humor.

STANISŁAW DZIWISZ (SDGunsmith. Name’s too hard to pronounce; they just call him “Stan”. Displaying deep and expansive expertise on firearm’s details. Tied with Chinese, Polish, and Soviet syndicates as keeper for illegal eastern arms. Always concealed three handguns in person, under a constant state of paranoia.

RUDY "RICHIE RICH" MICKENS Brown-hatted. Cheeky pimp who pays Black Descendants taxes to smoothly operate a whorehouse in the Michael Johnson project. In eighty seven, he moves on for his real dream: to be a fashion showbiz and modeling agent of change for his regulars; no legalized pornography included. Has arms dealing as side hustle. Only approve the shiniest guns, only sell to other macks and madams.

MATTHEW QUIRK (MQFreelancer. Charismatic gun-for-hire whose underground career skyrocketed back in late 60s to early 70s. Today’s a middle-aged man, not as hyperactive, but still preserving his legendary status. Known to drain his contractor’s bank account as much as possible. Nolan’s frequent customer.

(ADDED) HERMAN SZEDVILAS Grifter. Lithuanian-Irish descent factory working man who has to fund a wife, a son, a daughter, and another child with sexual ambiguity. A humiliating pickpocketing experience has granted him an epiphany that he should've been the thief, not the victim.

(ADDED) JORGE "DOUBLE J" JIMENEZ Junior. Alvaro's only son and hope. He does whatever it takes to not let Junior thrown into a juvenile facility for his vandalism  A teenage gangster-wannabe who ponders which circle of friends he should hang with. Has a literal deadline, be inducted in one gang and the rest abominates you.

MICHAEL TOWNLEY Good kid. Acta Brannigan advertises him on the front-page as a future football star from Eugizzi. Unqualified for professional contract for being temperamental and injury prone. Switching to gun-related petty crimes after high school. Unlocking a hidden sharpshooting talent.

TREVOR PHILIPS Canadian. Discharged air force pilot for his unstable psychology. Now an ambitionless drifter, accepting any job for food and fuel; mostly a trucking job in the border. Brannigan is his occasional destination point, but it is apparent he’s not used to living in big cities.

spacer.png

The word “community” has lost its meaning as gangs spin the term. However, Brannigan citizens want to re-correct its definition. They vow to abolish gang commotions, wherever and whenever possible, via social works and collaborations with the law. From civil figures to church preachers, they voluntarily run character building, prevention, and rehabilitation programs. The young generations are guided before gang assimilations.

Notable non-profit organizations include: WE SHALL LIVE LONG (WSLL) provides selective protection for economically incapable family members; BRICK INC or the Brannigan Constructor coaches leadership and soft skill classes; the CORPS OF CHANGE has ex-gangbangers lecturing and straightening the youth; and WALK FREE advocates for anti-gun violence. However, when the persuasion approach fails, the AVENGING ANGELS believe in fighting fire with fire. The red berets are convinced they can replicate the sucess in Liberty City.

Demonstrations can also be witnessed across different times and parts of the city. Though these acts are intentionally tame and not as disruptive as in the sixties. For example, student activists are seen condemning Apartheid in South Africa and pushing for nuclear disarmament.

spacer.png

(ADDED) GRACE WILKINS (GMa Wilkins. Picture of a tough, heart-of-gold woman of this decade. She's acceptive of private dialogue with struggling, abused young mothers. She donates a third of her dinner's profit for street boys, WSLL's programs, and protests against UIB's land expansion. To fill a void Will's left, she adopts an 11-years old abandoned orphan named Anthony.

Brannigan’s finest knights will be the one opposing you the hardest. Serving and protecting is the BRANNIGAN POLICE DEPARTMENT (BPD), rapidly modernized with Mayor Luther’s imprimatur, but their reliance on excessive force remains. In the countryside, you instead come face-to-face with the much inferior but competent BAKER COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE (BCSO), and the GALLAGHER POLICE DEPARTMENT (GPD) in Gallagher. The three enforcements synchronize; wanted level won’t simply vanish by leaving their respective operational areas.

There are bad cops and good cops who turn bad when the circumstance says. The BPD has been criticized by press and civil society alike for false-profiling, unorthodox riot control, and sloppy accidents which they manipulate as crime scenes, as if every citizen is shooting first.

Their anti-gang tactic has been revised countless times. In early 60s, they used a decentralized system between commanders, then they paid gangs with federal money for peace. When it was leaked, mayor Bailey was forced to declare an all-out war. Currently, the gang counter unit is a special GANG SUPPRESSION DIVISION (GSD), consisting of BPD detectives, BCSO investigators, and special agents of the FEDERAL INVESTIGATION BUREAU (FIB). The objective: investigate, confront, and prosecute gang members and suspicious-looking youths; as well as preventing gang recruitments at schools. State law has allowed the automatic transfer of juveniles to adult court for serious crime charges, and may be sentenced to a sixty years term. Assisting the GSD in curbing the gang problems are the BPD’s public housing crime unit: bravest personnels with balls to venture into the feared projects; and the BPD’s tireless narcotics unit.

The BPD is led by Seth Palmerston, promoted from interim to permanent superintendent on behalf of Mayor Luther. A respected veteran, Palmerston determines to end the department’s racial segregation. He finally recognizes the AFRO-AMERICAN A-TEAM (AAA), an internal league of black patrolmen. Under mayor Bailey, they were heavily discriminated as mannequins of racial representation. Under mayor Byron and Luther, they gain the special duty of easing the department’s tensions with black citizens and other minority groups.

As you’re playing with guns, you will encounter the BUREAU OF FIREARMS, EXPLOSIVES, ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO (FEAT). Acting like DOA in war versus drug, FEAT’s mission is to dismantle your illegal market, by ambushing deals and recovering your firearms using their elite task force. The agency itself is inefficient; the congress declares that their tactics are reprehensible. They have a shoot first question later mentality, and more often apprehend law-abiding citizens with already licensed weaponries. It wasn’t until 1986 that FOPA is enacted, which minimizes FEAT’s abusive inspections.

The BPD is headquartered in The Circuit, where the brutalist federal prison of Central Correctional Center also pierces the sky. The BPD has an office on each side of Brannigan: West Circuit (West), Panorama (North), and Bakerwood (South). BCSO is headquartered in Bennett, adjacent to the Crestville Correctional Center; while GPD’s central office is in Downtown Gallagher.

AGENT DOUG MASON (FIBFIB. Wiretapping pro. Determined to decipher coded languages that street gangs use during phone conversations. Usually spends an entire day in his listening post with audio equipment and papers. In 1986, he begins eavesdropping on Howard Castle’s outgoing calls. He suspects that he’s into something sinister that threatens US geopolitical stability.

AGENT HARVEY CALVELLI FEAT. Using Brannigan's policy as an excuse to tax gun owners and dealers around the countryside. No money, he will dispatch the agency’s task force right at your door and enforce a payment deadline, or else he will shoot you, your family, and your pet dog dead.

ETHAN MANGANIELLO Sergeant. Promoted to lieutenant in 1985, then a commander in 1987. Leading what’s notoriously dubbed “The Ballbusters”, a rooster of inhumanely abusive officers. Secret fan of sadomasochism porns, he squeezes confessions out of suspects by electric stimulation on their crotches, his favorite method. Has an immense pressure from HELP and past victims on his shoulders, but the department is unsure how to evict him.

DET. STUART MALONEY (SMVice Unit. Eighty five is his year one of service. Easily swayed by easy money. Sell evidence and confiscated firearms out of the lockers if the bid satisfies his stomach. Pay a higher stack and he ensures a marketplace remains unnoticed. Laid back type, confident he is untouchable.

DET. CASSANDRA WALKER (CWGSD. Active guest speaker in the Corps of Change, motivator for school dropouts to forego gang life. Emotionally-driven, raising her revolver to the slightest sign of abusive behaviors. Rummaging riskily around ghettos to save as many innocents in projects as possible. A friend of Ma’ Wilkins.

DET. LARRY ORR Public housing crime unit. Belligerent hard-boiled detective. He was raised in The Village, growing up as a passive observant of the project’s criminal life, calculating how to derive benefits from it but too afraid to be an active perpetrator. He then learned the power a silver police badge poses. Now that he has one, he can visit any public housing empty-handed and leaving fully-pocketed with jewelry after shaking-up tenants and gangs.

DET. FLYNN RORSCHACH Martial artist. More than a regular plain-clothed narcotics detective doing buy-bust operations. The street respects him as “Master Flynn” out of fear. Has a black belt in karate after a vacation to Japan. Prefer to be a lone wolf, a one man army who ignores his superior’s lawful advice.

OFFICER FRANCIS MOSELY - AAA. Prestigious patrol officer in the south side region. He is awarded with lifesaving awards twice: for catching a baby that fell from an apartment and for entering a burning building to save a family. Has two bullet wounds and more bodily injuries as other medallions. Unbribable, making gangs and building councils entrusting him in peace negotiations. Occasionally accompanied with Officer Ray Dziubarczyk, Eddie's Cheesecake eater with poorer communication skills.

Since the late nineteenth century, Brannigan has had a myriad of littering crime factions from all ethnicities: whites, blacks, hispanics, Far East Asians, and beyond.

The Italian-American TRENCHCOATS is the oldest standing syndicate, maintaining a strong grip for decades and shadowing the city’s political layer. Although completely uncomparable, the IRISH, POLISH, and SOVIET enclaves also have their own crime families with differing interests. Meanwhile, the TONGS keep localizing their influences in Chinatown and Little Saigon; and the newfound MEXICAN CARTEL slowly emerges as a prominent player as drug business flourishes. These syndicates rarely solve their tensions with open war to lessen pressures from feds. They usually confide one-percenter BIKER CLUBS or in rarer cases, STREET GANGS, for dirty matters.

Street gang ecosystem in Brannigan is unique to its own. Each can be distinguished with different symbols and emblems. Each has unique sign systems, traditions, fashions, and jewelry to promote their fame and solidarity. Each has their own territories and an interest to expand their turf. Major “supergangs” such as the BLACK DESCENDANTS, EL AMUD, and SPANISH LORDS are developing from traditional old-schoolers to organized crimes with an actual hierarchical structure and intention to expand their wings with multiple franchises.

It wasn’t until 1978 that street factions copied Cosa Nostra by forging grand alliances. While convicted In Crestville Panopticon, Willie Cooper united gang leaders for stoppage protest and control over the prison system. His rivals respond by making an opposition. This is the historical birth of two nations: TRIBE and PILGRIMS. Some consider the coalitions as mere formalities because violent battles between members are fairly frequent.

Based on People Nation. The Pilgrims identify themselves as the more religious and progressive counterpart of the Tribe.

Leading the league is EL AMUD (El Rukn), formerly a more public nation called the BLACK "BG" GUARDIANS. Howard Castle directs it into a rightful path: following Islamic customs and transforming it into a "legitimate" business empire, funded by cocaine and heroin. They headquartered in the Kasbah of Cleavaland, a stronghold where they holds weekly worship meeting. The religious and secretive status becomes a handicap for police surveillance. Possible transnational link to North African terrorist.

NOTABLE FIGURES

  • Howard Castle - El Amud's supreme leader and muslim follower of Noble Ali Drew. Shrouded in mystery, rarely appearing in public since paroled in 1976. Legend claims he and Gordon are born from the same bloodline, but separated due to gangs difference.
  • General Fath -
  • Melvin "Mobby Dick" Habishon -
  • Huel - Ex boyscout who enjoys ripping rival gang patches/badges and sewing it to his leather jacket. He proudly wears them like trophies when out for action. Better run if your uniform has something that his collection doesn't.

Based on Chicago Outfit. Trenchcoats receive their name from their fashion taste in the Great Depression. The undisputed Italian-American mafia in Brannigan since it was founded by "Arnie" Valentino, a role model of every ambitious kingpin wannabe out there. Though their overall power has dwindled, they remain an integral piece of The Commission puzzles as the only non-Liberty permanent representative, and their influence extend all the way to the movie industry in San Andreas, grand casinos in Las Venturas, and more. In Brannigan, they spread thin across different restaurants, gentlemen clubs, and sex parlors.

America has never embraced the fourth amandement this extreme before. Cops and crooks are shooting each other as usual, but more civilians are made equal with arms now. Police forces declare that they are no match by the skyrocketing crime rate. They encourage the people to buy and use guns as well.

The media also advertise the tools of death shamelessly. They learn that promotion through military ads isn’t commercially attractive enough. Now they use stacked bodybuilders and scantily clad models, and it works. In television, police procedural like Vice Vances engage the audiences with its gunfight scenes. Guns are the new gods. You aren’t a badass until you have one.

You can legally get guns almost everywhere, except in where Bloodsales take place. In courtesy of Mayor Luther, alderman Speedie, and American Rifle Managements (ARM), Brannigan is the first major city to make them illegal. The only exceptions are those that have been listed in the registration office in Bailey Plaza. Police will do routine checks on anyone suspected of owning unlicensed guns. Violators will be fined $500.

Local gun vendors have no other choices but to close doors. Gun sales have been fully sustained by the black market since then. Illegal dealers are dotted around the map, hidden in the back alleys, basements, warehouses, vacant apartments, and abandoned buildings. Mobile dealers can be called to buy weapons wherever and whenever you desire, though offering less diverse choices.

Here are the loadouts. Each gun comes with varying size, weight, performance, and unique selling point.

5-1-1-Handguns.png

5-1-2-Guns.png

5-1-3-Shotguns.png

5-1-4-Rifles-Heavy.png

Reintroduced in Bloodsales is different types of ammunations aside from standard rounds:

  • Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) “Increased accuracy, may pierce through target”

  • Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP) “More fatal gun wound on your body”

  • Overpressure (+P) “Faster muzzle velocity, best for defense”

  • Armor Piercing (AP) “Penetrate through armors and vehicles”

  • Incendiary (I) “Ignite fire upon contact”

There always be more to come: gunsmith, modifications, etc.

Hammerspace is absent. On-foot inventory is limited: double small one-handed arms on your belt holsters, and a single shotgun/rifle slinged on your back. Extra carries are rewarded by creativity. Wear a coat to conceal a sawn-off beneath, put on boots to hide a tiny handgun on your ankle, or use a sizable briefcase or bag for multiple machine guns. Excess weapons are stashed in safehouse’s closets or the trunk of cars/boats. Other items such as healthy snacks and bandages are kept in satchel like in Red Dead. Keep in mind that your mobility (sprint, jump, climb, swim) can be limited with the more tools you carry.

While guns has the vocal attention, close combat is not ignored. Basic melee combat is messy, reminiscent of typical bar brawls without rules. Learn your surrounding environment, push the opponent into the wall, throw them out of an open window, or grab a wooden plank from a trash bin. Want to be a badass? Train Will with martial arts: Kung-fu (Chinatown), Krav Maga (Little Odessa), or boxing (Booth Park). Each comes up with variative moves of rapid-weak or slow-strong strikes, block and grapple. You can switch between different combat styles via the weapon wheel.

5-2-Bag.png

Bloodsales will immerse you with a semi-realistic experience of a gunrunner’s life. The gameplay takes inspirations from previous contents such as Jacob’s Drug Delivery, Arms Trafficking Ground, and Disruption Logistics; as well as other delivery video games like Death Stranding and Lake.

What you trade is marked as “for sale”, separating it from your personal arsenal. Marked items cannot be used unless you’re ready to compensate.

SMUGGLING

To get the goods in the first place you must bypass the law. Your main source is hiring a SMUGGLER or two. Contact them, set the price and quantity, and they’ll transport the goods from neighboring states or Canada. The goods are used weapons, military surplus, or illegal imports. Once the smuggler arrive after few days, you make the exchange. They get paid and the goods fall to your responsibility. Deliver them to the stash house. If anyone is tailing, lose them first.

STEALING

STEALING from other gangs (warehouses or fellow dealers) or BPD’s weekly shipment is an alternative source. Not a cent is spent, but you gain unwanted backlash and heat. Rob from a gang, their satisfaction meter towards you drops. Rob the BPD and the heat meter increases. You can’t cheat by selling back stolen items of the same customer.

STASHING

All merchandise are stored inside CONTAINERS, differing in size (S, M, L, XL) and shape (parcel, plastic bag, briefcase, box, crate, chest, etc). A STASH HOUSE’s function is to keep the goods safe and sound. You begin with a simple storage room in the basement of your Crete’s safehouse. As cash stacks in, you can purchase a compact apartment room or an industrial warehouse. Smaller storage is cheaper and easier to protect. Bigger stash house has extra spaces, but the higher is the investments: base price, maintenance cost, and security.

TRANSACTION

Will realistically always makes sure his products end up in the wisest hand. During any TRANSACTION, you’re not only able to bargain, but also dig into the buyer’s motive. Listen carefully to their answers and you’ll learn if they’re planning some robberies or tightening defenses of their turfs. You’ll identify negative signs from mad hatters, backstabbers, or undercover police. If they respond suspiciously, anticipate a setup. Keep your eyesight close on the goods. Failing to survive an ambush nets you major profit losses.

SELLING

Due to its illicit nature, the transaction is always secretive. SELLING are done at Nolan’s own SHOP or through delivery ORDERS. For the former, see “facilities” section on the next post.

As your network grows, more people obtain your number. Customer starts contacting through phone and giving an order to fulfill. Time and location can be negotiated, and changed later if either party forsee a disaster. Look at the pinboard in Nolan’s back office for all available orders. Order comes in three mission variations:

  • MERCHANT “Visit the client with any selection of diverse weaponry in a suitcase or a car trunk. The client will decide their choice on-the-spot. You can direct them to buy certain item that suits their needs.”
  • PACKAGE “The client has requested a specific loadout, like an Avenger 9MM with 130 rounds, to be delivered to them directly or to be stashed in a secure location.”
  • WHOLESALE “The client, usually a certain organized faction, demands a bulk buying: one or multiple L or XL container. The most serious transaction type. Transporting the goods without arousing the other’s interests can be difficult.”

DISTRIBUTION

More orders are piling up as the business grows. Will can’t micromanage everything, so Nolan soon greenlights the recruitment of extra dealers. You’ll lead the the DISTRIBUTION scheme: hiring the right men, tasking them with selected orders, and paying their cut. Entrust them fully, reward with bonus buck for good works, but don’t hesitate to “punish” them for failed orders with nonsense excuses.

5-3-Mail.png

VALUE

How much your goods worth depends on four factors: DEMAND, RARITY, CONDITION, and SATISFACTION. Demand and rarity are fluctuating variables; they change each week in accordance to the marketplace. If Micro. 45 is the most popular machine gun on the street, you see many boys using it, its value drops. Condition is same as in Red Dead Redemption II. The levels from best to worst are: excellent (in perfect condition, usually factory new products), fine, good, fair, and poor. Maintain your stock regularly, love them, keep them in pristine condition for maximum profit.

SATISFACTION

The fourth factor is determined by the buyer. Does your service SATISFY the customer enough? Are you setting up high price for poor goods? Are you a friend or enemy of their cause? Satisfaction is built by arriving the right time, showing the best offer, and being kind to them. Successful deals increase satisfaction. More people will flock in.

However, there are situations when you shouldn’t believe the “customer is always right” motto. If you feel the buyer is the only side profiting from the deal, you gotta stay firm on your ground.

AT WHAT COST?

You think it's as simple as obtaining, selling, and getting rich? Of course not.

The game records whenever the goods change hands. For example, if you sell sniper rifles to a project’s conqueror, their rooftop guards will use them. More guns mean more bloods are shed. Parallel to the story and reputation’s progression is the increase in violence and unpredictability. More shooting incidents are reported on the radio. More interference on your business by the community and BPD.

Special thanks to @Akaviri for helping me with this section.

I just finished reading through the radio stations and the map alone, I can already tell it’ll be great concept! I’m already feeling the Brannigan vibes. Is the story going to be inspired by blaxploitation films? The kung-fu training seems a bit like a product of its era. Good job!

Thanks. The Chicago Outfit appears here by the name Trenchcoats. I'm still developing the gang section to cover the Italians and other underworld entities, but most importantly, the two street nations (Folk and People).

Theme n' tone-wise it's gonna be closer to Greed & Grit than LC78. There's many influences molded at once that build the atmosphere, particularly from news reports like this. Blaxploitation too. I fell in love with the genre after reading LC78 and watching Sheba, Baby (1975). This fim is where I get to know Austin Stoker and end up watching many of his movies like The Assault On Precinct 13. Quickly grows as one of my favorite actors, so I decide, "Yeah, let's cast him."

Chyeeeah this looks sick!

And has a dangerous vibe. Presentation is done well as expected. Strikes like a mix of L&S, LC78, and Third Rail. The header graphics are nice.

I recognize that linked picture of the protagonist. I think at one time I saved that picture long ago, thinking he looked like a good character to cast as a North Holland money man. Turns out he took his business over to Brannigan instead :D

He's proper fit for the role of a machinegun salesman.

And holy mother of gunpowder, the weapons spread is unforgivingly vast. I really love some of the names you came up with. Glad to have helped out a bit. I see some of those odd gats made the cut.

Chicago is a fresh frontier, so let the war games begin. Gusenberg and Brannigan are going to put it back on the map this year!

Liver Buster

Right, I'm loving this! First off, the distinction between the tones of L&S' Vice City as a glitzy 'Sodom / Gomorrah' and Bloodsales' Brannigan as an absolute cesspool with a certain charm really shows your knack as a highly-skilled depictual content creator. I can sense that you're probably putting a lot of work in to build up a lore for Brannigan - with a guy from the past named 'Arnie' Valentino fitting the shoes of Al Capone. I'm especially excited to see how the 'Folk vs. People' nations conflict will turn out... and the story behind that, because the violent African-American gangbanging in Chicago is as old as they come.

I kinda got good vibes with 'Will' for his role as the protagonist. He's somewhat of a different cut when it comes to colored protagonists: He sounds more grounded - that's what I get reading between these lines...

The Wilkins family were middle-class merchants, having moved to Brannigan in mid-1950s. Father Richard was an industrial trucker going in-and-out the state. An overprotective gentleman who’s smart enough to get a spot in Higgins Street or the heart of the city’s trading. It’s safe from robbers and racists. Mother Grace used to run a small dinner on the first floor. Will’s the only son. He lived a proper childhood on the second floor. He may have marched in civil right protests and brawled against racial prejudices in his youth; but never once did he crosses the line Mr. Wilkins had drawn: joining gangs.

Also the ability to loot fallen gangbangers and putting on a facade caught my attention - gave me a lot of 'Two Bit Hit' vibes. Not necessarily in a strict way but the way I comprehend it is that Brannigan is a very dangerous concrete jungle, and the player is frequently prompted to wardrobe changeovers - both as a means of survival and espionage.

All in all, decent work. I'll try my best to check up around here to see what becomes of Bloodsales.

UPDATE 1.01 NOTES

Hello, been a while after the last time I'm working on this, but this week, I'll introduce a couple of new characters to the cast. Starting from Laurie Zimmer and Peter Fonda to more in coming days.

  • Alvaro Jimenez - From Mexico to Praha, he looks for any job possible, even if it just low-paid storage staff. Too bad his time at Nolan’s place lasts short. Uncomfortable around other Mexicans, especially gays.
  • Dorothy Watson - Accountant. Handling the treasury of a wealthy broker in Vaudeville after leaving Nolan. Hate her new boss. Get her and don’t ever worry of raids on your office anymore. She can handle sticky situations herself.
  • Noah Boyle - Has a sole-run small gunstore in North Side that secures family's future. Suffer the same fate as Nolan.
  • Paul "Proud" Shaddock - Son of Vietnam vets in the Lost MC, doctrined to embrace American's patriotism. A reckless, young arms smuggler who goes in-and-out the north border with convoys. Always accompanied by loud motorbike, and Sharon, his sultry vampiric girlfriend.

I'm also working on the gangs section, which will be an extension of the characters' part. Here's a quick teaser of the gangs in Bloodsales.

I also have to inform that a new mission/con game for Light & Shadow will be out this week. At first, I was planning for a new Thomas' mission involving his first meeting with a tourist trapper named Jan Daniels, but I'm unsatisfied with its scenario and thus deciding to merge it with another mission of him. So his mission is delayed. This next mission is Maria's, because I have some ideas about her, and because I'm creatively frustrated with many of awful female characters in recent Hollywood movies lol.

UPDATE 1.02 NOTES & INBOX

The last update admittedly wasn't very impressive. After almost two months, enjoy this more major content update.

The most noticable change you'll see first is the change of this thread's title. Previously it was BLOODSALES: BRANNIGAN 1984. I decide to rename it as BLOODSALES [A CHICAGO GTA CONCEPT]. Simply so casual lurkers can instantly know what's this thread is about. Those of you who search for "GTA Chicago" can find this easily. Small improvement, but hopefully one significant enough to ramp up the discussions here.

Other additions include:

  • The new Lakeside radio station for Prog Rock and Art Rock. Some tracks are moved from Light & Shadow's Evolution station. Making that station fully dedicated to prog metal is a better call.
  • Complete guides to Brannigan aka Chicago. See the complete profiles of individual area of both North and South Sides, as well as profile for the different Projects of the city. This is what I'm talking about in the GTA VI's subforum, @Mister Pink. Allow me to invite you here.
  • More Characters to enrich the cast, especially from The Law and their lowdown.
  • Get to know The Trenchcoats, the Italian Mafia based on Chicago Outfit. @Slezzy would love this.
  • Types of ammunation that you can use in combat. Thumbs up to @Akaviri again for the idea.

I will now work on extra contents for Light & Shadow, including another mission. Keep an eye on Vice City too :D

Also, thanks for your supports! Let's recheck the old inbox:

I really like the way you and Tyla name the guns of Vice City Origins concept, so why not replicate? It's fancier than naming a pistol "Heavy Pistol", especially for a gunrunning-centric concept.

There's so much histories between them. I need to dedicate more research before including more about them. The Castle Brothers are inspired by Larry Hoover (basically the founding forther of the two nations) and Jeff Fort (who transformed the Black P. Stones into the Islamic El Rukn). Figuring out that writing them as brothers will make the tensions and conflicts more interesting.

As a fun fact, the gang cards are what got me into Bloodsales in the first place. I accidently bumped into this gallery and thought, "Wouldn't it be nice if we can collect them all in a GTA game?" Then I just decided, "Why not?"

By the way, how's your SATEOF remaster doing, Naughtius? We're all waiting for the most anticipated concept of this year ;)

Constructing Hoover and Fort as the Castle Brothers may fall 'cliche drama' on deaf ears but that sounds intriguing. I mean, in general literature, you bump onto main characters born out of the 'sibling rivalry' concept but as Will is our protagonist, this feels different. There are these two influential figures in the Brannigan underworld, they are brothers and they're at crossfire. Makes the complicated real-life 'Folk vs. People' conflict more twisty.

So, besides the practicality, posing in gangbanger fashion is also something of a 'collecting war memoraphilia' - just like how an Native American warrior scalps his enemies. Like it! If you ever want to make Achievements for Bloodsales, there should definitely be an achievement for collecting all gang attires.

Actually I was planning to write it all down and post it up on here during this summer but I was occupied with some family issues and to top it all, I had some exhausting problem with one of my laptop's fans which I managed to replace just today. I guess it's all just a matter of designing all my work on a Word document, put out a good ol' text wall per se. Maybe I should make an update post on the Creators' Lounge to keep all the fans waiting informed on a little bit of what to expect from the SOTEOF remaster.

QUICK NOTE 1.03

Quite a while, huh?

Been returning to do more researches, and contemplating ways to keep interest. I'm thinking of time setting's change. For example, instead of being static in 1984, story would be spanning from 1984 to 1988. Evolving music, more Chicago House and hip-hop tracks. Evolving weaponry, new weapons are imported or become rarer each year. Evolving technologies, like brick phone in late-game. Evolving city buildings, gang politics, law policies, world events, and more.

Started watching a series called Lady Blue. B quality, but if you're looking for a hardcore 80s Chicago crime show, give a peek.

Nice concept, but GTA Chicago should take place in 2010s era imo. Gang culture always had hype around it , especially now when you got all these kids playing hood RP on FiveM and SA Multiplayers and listening to drill artists

Chicago is a pretty flexible setting tbh, we can set it at various timeframe. In 1910s it was the black hand crimes. In 20-30s it was the Prohibition era. From 40s to 60s was the rise of street gangs. 70s to 90s were more black flight, Mexican immigrations, and born of gang nations. 2000s till present are progression from them. For me, however, a period piece in 70s to 90s work better since the project buildings were still standing with all its decaying society.

I do wish we'll eventually get a GTA Chicago. New city, new part of America, it's about time.

Speaking of time, I get to remember that Michael Townley comes from midwest. He was a football star, and he was imprisoned twice before the Carcer City's robbery in 1988. Perhaps we can bring him in...

Hey, I can imagine this game being similar to Watch Dogs as it porttays Chicago also.

But I would have loved to see it cover the whole metro area, along with that airport.

Also having forested areas, like the ones that were cut from GTA IV on early stages.

I also would have loved if there were hyper-realistic elements from GTA Liberty City 1978 concept.

In that case, probably Carcer City theme would suit best your concept or combination of both Chicago & Gary under a new name (similar to what they've done in GTA 4 with LC and Alderney)

There's an interesting fact during this concept's early development.

My early pitch had two cities: Chicago (Brannigan) and Detroit (Carcer City), with countryside and forests in-between. I'm aware that Chicago has potential to be Carcer, but it doesn't click me, the city doesn't really match Carcer's level of urban decay as shown in Manhunt. But then I cut Detroit because diving into Chicago's rich history alone is already overwhelming for positive reason.

Now that you guys mention it again, guess I can reconsider the decision. Detroit's underworld had equal quality: the PartnershipBlack Mafia family, Chambers Brothers, height of Devil's Night, etc. Then one of my favorite concepts of all time is the second Carcer City concept by ObsydianRaven. It sets in 1988 and has Michael Townley with his first robbery. And I won't forget Claude4Catalina's Phil Bell concept that supposed to set in 1988's Carcer too.

To think again, gunrunning theme is more compelling with larger setting. Chicago and Michigan have strict gun law in the 80s already, so there's the intensifying challenge. You don't just smuggle, stock, and sell guns within the city's zone, but also between two cities with considerable distance. You're demanded to calculate the right amount of goods to avoid constant long trips. We can add something like Trevor's Arms Trafficking Air side mission too.

Progression is not as advanced as Light & Shadow yet; Bloodsales has wide rooms for improvements to increase the appeal factor. Lets see later ;)

UPDATE 1.04 NOTES

Here we go.

This is basically a reconstruction. More descriptions are added and expanded. Moving away from individual area list-styled formatting to a less repetitive summaries. Moving from gallery-style characters sheet to traditional list.

Addendums:

  • Map now include rural countryside and few new neighborhoods.
  • Researching more, I like the idea of elevating the role of civil movements/organizations in the story. They were instrumental in countering the crime historically. The BRICK INC is loosely based on Build Inc. AVENGING ANGELS is the same faction as in LC.
  • If drug dealers fought against the DOA, you as a gunrunner fight against the ATF, rebranded as the BUREAU OF FIREARMS, EXPLOSIVES, ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO (FEAT).
  • New faces to see in Brannigan. Meet a younger Michael and Trevor at their early twenties. They happened to be in the same city at the same time, but they won't meet each other yet.
  • List of gang names and their real-life counterparts (if any). Credit to @Big Fat Paulie for suggesting some of them. A comprehensive database like Red Line is in development ;)

There's a rewriting in this section. I make the Castle to be two person who happens to have same surname, moving from the same southern state at roughly the same year, and according to some people, used to live in the same projects. I'll leave it ambiguous whether they have blood relationship or is it just a wild coincidence.

Nefarious Money Man

I know it's early days, but I really love the presentation in this. It looks just as good as, but has a completely different vibe to, Light & Shadow. I can see you've really taken in what others are doing well and adapted the best bits into something that flows very naturally from one section to the next. So I'm really excited to see this one progress.

Carcer is probably more like Philly/Camden than Detroit. In-universe lore suggests that it's fairly close to LC.

It's easy to retcon things, isn't it? Honestly, I'm just being used with the convention that Detroit is Carcer after reading many concept threads that doing so.

I don't see Philly as Carcer. It's not as run-down as what Manhunt has depicted. I name the city Nassau in my canon to follow the continuity of GTAFanon Wiki. But I'm no longer tied with that community as much as before and may consider new name. Phyllis, after Phyllis Dietrichson because it rhymes? Lenapia too like others? Haven't decided it yet.

Hey, Camden is another story. I read in other thread that Camden is a very close influence to Carcer.

My other headcanon is that Carcer is simply a fictionalized city near LC that is inspired by multiple minor industrial cities.
