Overlooked aspects of GTA games.

When people talk about the GTA series, both with people who have played them and those who have only read about / heard about them, there are a set of topics which regularly come up. These seem to be divided into two general areas: game-related factors (open-world / sandbox, controls, characters, graphics, combat, driving etc.) which are the focus of the people who've actually played the games and "controversies" (violence, misogyny and alleged sexism, derogatory portrayals of certain ethnic groups, and so on), which tend to be what the media focuses on.

What I don't see mentioned so often is how damn funny these games can be.

I'm on my second run through San Andreas and some of the random things uttered by the NPCs are just bizarrely entertaining.

"I need to find out what day it is"

"Someone should hit you with a brick" (that might actually be Vice City, I'm not sure, but the point stands)

"Something  died in my underwear"

There are dozens of these quirky lines, and they really do add to the overall experience of the games.

What other aspects of the series do you think aren't given enough recognition?

In a similar fashion, I'd say radio adverts and talk radio stations. GTA is a goldmine when it comes to those, and I rarely hear casual players talking about them.

WCTR in San Andreas will always be the pinnacle of comedy. But another thing people don't talk about is the regular DJ nonsense like Iggy Pop complaining on LRR.

The Internet in GTA IV/EFLC and GTA V. I used to spend hours browsing different websites in GTA IV. I also love how GTA V took it even further with websites being more interactive like the ability to play videos, some websites having minigames or quizzes etc.

In a way, it's like reading the books in The Elder Scrolls games - both are a great source of information if you want to learn more about the lore.

That's a good one. I feel like I didn't do enough dicking around on the internet in IV and V because there was so much else to do. Next time around I'll get more into that side of it.

A lot of people slept on keepie-uppie ball in VC and it shows

At least based on my experience in Arabic-speaking gaming communities (especially the more casual fans) but the general parody/mockery aspect of GTA often gets glossed over when it comes to discussions about GTA games.

It's kinda like what the OP and others have said actually.

Not sure if it counts but i feel like the R* video editor feature for GTA V have been simply forgotten about for the most part.

I remember when people used to do all those "machinima" videos from GTA 4 days and they were actually quite popular at the time.
