Should real-world events be referenced?

So many interesting things have been happening recently that can be used as easter eggs on GTA 6, first the recent ufo events and now the Ohio incident too, by the way when I say easter egg I don't necessarily mean making fun of such events, considering that many people suffers a lot because of them, so let's keep things civilized shall we?

uhh what? a literal ongoing catastrophe thats uprooting thousands of lives and displacing wildlife within a 100 mile radius and possibly poisoning the water supply would be a cool easter egg? they might as well add the turkey earthquakes too. would be hilarious! /s

bruh idek that was the most out of left field post ive seen in a while :kekw:

only similarities is that both states are memes.

On topic though, I love RDR2 but despite its crazy amount of voice lines even for just NPCs, theres only like 3 different yelling variations. It got old very quick and kinda took me out of the game for some reason. Just so odd that rstar went out of the way to give full voiced lines and convos to peds yet they all have the same yell. Hopefully each npc has their own unique scream when i set them ablaze 🙂

Man, why do many even desire so many real world events being referenced anyway? Let the game have its own weird sh*t. I don't need to be reminded of awful real life bullsh*t

Not every real life reference on GTA 5 and RDR2 took place on the real life counterpart of their respective locations, the characters can still talk about it even if it didn't take place on Leonida/Florida.

(to everyone involved) Can we please stop arguing about this already? Lol. They have added references to other places in past games but if anything it's just small blurbs of text in news sites, most things will still be Miami focused. I don't think all real world disasters need a reference, but I also think everyone involved in this conversation needs to not act so... "passionately" about this. Removed a few posts that were getting spicy, y'all are better than this.

I just temporarily locked the topic for a couple mins as I saw an argument brewing and usually when that happens there's a flurry of posts continuing the argument lmao, locking ensures people can't post while it's investigated and read. Tried and tested method over the years *taps forehead*

I just thought it would be interesting if they got referenced because they're major events, but not in a funny way y'know, I just didn't know people would get so offended by it like you said lol, but it's best to just wait for the game to come out and see what's in there.

I'm really sorry to hear this. It's just that there's no need for folks to get involved in arguments about suggestions like this, even if you think they're stupid and it goes for everyone involved. :) The person who called you sensitive counts too, there was no reason for that either.

I've done one better, I've turned the discussion into its own topic so people can discuss real-life events in general. Just please don't start bickering over specific suggestions :)

i think you misunderstand what should qualify as an easter egg. what would that add to the game that intrigues you so much, chill guy?

I also edited the original comment into something which sounds less "offensive", since it got turned into a topic, I think I just expressed myself wrong to begin with.

GTA reflects the real world and many events that happen in it around the time the games are set, but they do have to be picky. Video games are a form of escapism and there are certain things people don't want to be reminded of when trying to have fun playing a game.

Not to say that it means things like the chemical spill mentioned above or the big one, the coronavirus pandemic, can't even be directly referenced and portrayed in a video game period, but that some games aren't suited to it and I'm not sure GTA is one of the games that would be suited to it. It tends to parody and satirize real world events, not mirror, and while there are elements of events such as these that they could satirize, simply putting your self in a position where you can satirize them in a video game means also having to handle the other side of the event (the impact on the average citizen) and I don't think that sided is well suited to GTA my self.

I think the Ohio event has a bigger chance of being referenced in one of the in game radio station talk shows or those hidden in game websites than in a actual conversation between characters, as I don't think it's something they would be really interested on as criminals.

It's possible they could use something like that as a throw away line on the radio I suppose yea.

Hurricane Sandy effected New York, and was referenced by DJ George on Radio Mirror Park in V.

Throwaway lines, sure. Just mentioning things that happened to cities in previous games is something that will likely happen (LC and LS will be referenced in VI for sure).

But current-day disasters that killed a lot of people being referenced? Might be a bit distasteful. Like imagine if they made an in game conspiracy about the Earthquake in Turkey. How horrific would that be?

Rockstar don't WANT a lawsuit at the end of the day.

I don't think there's any need to specifically reference actual real world events but I'd love if the radio had some kind of national or even global broadcast that focused on the world beyond the city/region we play in. That's just solid world building and makes it feel like we're less the center of the universe and more just a small part of it.

And, while I don't think they need to reference real things with any specific details, I don't really see a point in trying to tiptoe around it either. You mention an especially deadly tornado in the Midwest and people are going to connect that reference to hundreds of different real world events. Same goes for any natural disaster.

Also, there's zero reason to be sensitive about a natural disaster for fear of upsetting players who have been affected by natural disasters in a game that lives and breathes on satirizing, exaggerating, and glorifying American gun violence.

Do you not know what an Easter egg is? Literally what is a toxic train crash in Ohio going to do for a video game set in Florida if not just for a punchline

You know they’ll reference some cringe Tik Tok sh*t. I certainly hope so. I wonder what name they’ll spoof it on

I can already see it now… “Idiot tries the new trend by dancing in front of oncoming traffic and is then run down in the process”

I ask you to show me respect, I didn't disrespect you, your mother or her friend and I wasn't the one who did this to him for you to put the blame on me, end of discussion, I won't get into a argument over a derailed train far awar from my home which had nothing to do with me, so let's avoid trouble for both of us in here.

I mean the Ohio situation will probably be old news by the time the game comes out (Unless it turns into a Flint Water Crisis type thing), I can see Covid-19 and the pandemic being mentioned since that's a pretty huge post-GTA-V event but other things I can't really see making a reference in the game. Maybe some pop-culture thing like Harambe's death or maybe the Political Climate of the Trump Era getting made fun of or Lampooned, I can see that making it's way into VI.

No because it's not the real world. I'd rather events in past games being referenced. Like the Jay Norris assassination.

To be honest, I don't know if Rockstar can do a good job satirizing current events since it feels like real life already does a good job of satirizing itself.
