"Transhumanism"

It is funny to see people use such absurd hyperbole to describe what is happening right now, when in reality [at the moment], Chat GPT and AI image generators are nothing more than complex plagiarism machines.

Guys I hate to burst the shiny silicon bubble but we are nowhere near Cyberpunk or Deus Ex and an algorithm regurgitator is not ushering it in.

Donnie Darko's revelation about fast-tracking job applications is the much more realistic fear; we're just going to automate the mundane.

Skynet is not around the corner 🥲

^Since it's AI thread I thought of talking about the other stuff too aside AI art, maybe I might have done wrong so then as I don't know much about these nor English is my native language to say these better, I just expressed my opinion that humans should be more careful with it not that we are anywhere near that. Also you took those out of context there? As for AI art specifically I simply don't like it but it sure can help us artists in some ways.

Nobody is claiming Skynet is around the corner.

The parallel I was drawing with Deus Ex: was the public divide over it's use of augments and regulations, similar to AI.  So far AI is unregulated, a bit like augments in Deus Ex. There was a divide of public opinion at the start of the Human Revolution. Heck, the conversation has already begun as people are being phased out of certain roles due to automation. There's a good article interview with a Nobel Laurette in economics, Joeseph Stiglitz who makes a case for AI causing further inequality due to job automation by AI.  Unregulated AI Will Worsen Inequality, Warns Nobel-Winning Economist Joseph Stiglitz - Scientific American

I've heard lots of people dismiss the latest advancements in AI with the same repetitive reductionist type of description like yours  "It's just an algorithm regurgitator." Yeah, and Google is just a "digital indexer." You can reduce anything down to simple unattractive terms.  The reality is, we're on the cusp of life-changing technology. And if you are old enough, you'll realise 25 years is a short time. I'm old enough to remember not having internet: no such thing as online dating, no forums, no Instagram, no Facebook, no cash apps, no online banking, no online gaming, no DLC, no software updates, no emails, no online job applications. Technology has moved so fast in 25 years since I remember none of those things (not saying the internet didn't exist in '98 just nobody had it, at least not the common household). Saying the AI advancements or Chat GPT or whatever is just "an online algorithm regurgitator" reminds me of this quote from Newsweek on the subject of the internet in 1995:

“The truth is, no online database will replace your daily newspaper, no CD-ROM can take the place of a competent teacher and no computer network will change the way government works,”

He quoted the predictions of nameless "visionaries", almost all of which have come to be.

“Visionaries see a future of telecommuting workers, interactive libraries and multimedia classrooms. They speak of electronic town meetings and virtual communities. Commerce and business will shift from offices and malls to networks and modems. And the freedom of digital networks will make government more democratic.”
Sounds like 2017, doesn’t it?
“Baloney," argued Stoll.

So yeah, understand me while I'm sceptical of naysayers when it comes to AI.

Do you think it's because of how vocal he's been as a critic or warner of the potential bad paths of AI and that's why OpenAI want him out?

I don't have the slightest clue, and there's speculation in all directions. The one I'm most likely to think is true, is that the board thought AI is moving too fast and want to slow it down due to safety.

They really shot themselves in the foot though, and now look:

It's incredible how nearly 700 employees threatened to walk out if Altman was out.

Altman was on JRE recently enough and whatever you think of JR, he was actually on good form and you can't fault the podcast format JR cultivated: letting Altman answer without interruption. It's a great listen. But, I'll share this.. Lex's podcast is inspired by the JRE format, keeping it longform and conversational and, of course Lex is in AI so, interesting to see what a conversation between two AI professionals sounds like. Lex is considerate to his audience by asking the laymen questions first.

Was having an issue while doing a bit of programming and more out of curiosity than anything I decided to ask ChatGPT to debug my code. I assumed the bot was more for say brainstorming ideas for vacation activities or writing essays when you have writers block and such. I don't know what I was expecting but it not only understood my code, it clearly explained where I went wrong and also rewrote the code to fit my problem much more accurately. Hell it even gave me tips on 'good coding practices' as if it was judging me 💀

Smug bugger. Granted I'm not the most proficient programmer or whatever right now, but I'm impressed AI programs can interpret code now, and write code to fit the problem too.

I don't know how long AI has been capable of this, but I wonder how far these programs can go. I remember a cartoon that was making fun of suggestions that AI will replace programmers, and hopefully AI programmers don't make human ones obsolete anytime soon, but at this point I'm wondering if I should quit learning code and start learning prompt engineering :pointkek:

Mister Pink

All the developers I know are using it as a staple assistant when coding/debugging or writing short scripts to manage tasks. I think some people have been a bit dismissive and perhaps missing out on it's potential.

I've been using Kaiber.ai recently for photo and video work. These tools rely heavily on good command data. And often I'd use Chat GTP to help me write command prompts to get better outputs.

Microsoft Edge has actually been quite great these last few years because not only is it Chromium based but it has Chat-GPT integrated (Co-Pilot) and Bing Image Creator.
