Cop cars at the beginning of the game (mystery)

Recommended Posts

When I was speedrunning GTA 3 I noticed a wierd thing. Two cop cars always spawn at the beginning of the game near Callahan bridge. Does anyone know why that happens and what was the devs' intention with this?

Here is the full video:

Btw the video above is made by me, I just have a different name on YT.

I guess this has been known for years. Considering it always happens on all platforms and the cars do not randomly respawn, it is an intended feature. The officers are meant to be investigating the scene. Perhaps R* did not bother to make the officers do more as they appealed to common sense. Considering what kind of clothes they are wearing, Claude and 8-Ball would not just go back on the bridge, telling the cops that they are the convicts who escaped from the convoy.

Also, during this mission, a wanted level cannot be gained up to 6:00 am game time. Try gaining one afterwards and see how it unfolds.

Thank you, I think you are right. It's just weird to me, that R* games have lots of details in it, and I don't know why the devs wouldn't add some extra details to it, even if it's not common sense. By the way, I tested how the cops would react after you can gain wanted level, and by shooting one cop car, you'll be wanted but none of the two cops would get out and arrest you, even when you try to steal their car.

Well, considering what we've heard from the city news before the jailbreak, I would say that these two police cruisers arrived at the scene to look for the victims/suspects and investigate in general. "Revelations as to the professionalism of the attack struck police hours afterward when the identification of the missing felons was further hampered by an attack by computer hackers on police headquarter databases." This particular statement indicates that police didn't know that we were missing just yet, that's why we are not able to get a wanted level for 2 hours after the event, our ID was simply erased from the database. That's how I see it at least ;)

Yes, I think you're right. It was just weird to me how they stopped their car, and stopped. It's probably a rushed/unfinished easter egg. My view of the wanted level system is that in the opening cutscene Claude and 8-ball hits a police officer at his head, so when he wakes up, he reports them to the police, and you can gain wanted level afterwards. Reading yours could be also correct, and it's an interesting aspect.

Hardware limitations. They're investigating the crime scene. It's just added ambience, you're not supposed to interact with them. When gta3 released I remember seeing them and thinking "I better get out of here before they come after me."

I don't think it really goes that deep. At the time, DMA weren't taking a relatively serious stance on the series and it was still very gta2-esque. The bridge exploded, it was loud, cops came to check it out.

I don't think hardware limitations were the case here, because rockstar was able to program harder and very unnecessary tasks; for example, cars going out of the way when using the siren of the police car.

You're reading too much into this. It's just two patrol cars investigating a huge explosion which just occurred at Callahan Bridge. You're not supposed to follow them. It's just a neat little detail that adds realism to the scene.

Maybe that's right. It's an old game after all relased in the early 2000's, they couldn't made everything too realistic.
