GTA V's map is bigger than GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas, and GTA IV combined (OC)

How many of you knew that? Its also bigger than New Yorks Manhattan and is about the same size as RDR2s map.

Yes I made these cute little graphics. No the maps arent to scale. I wonder how GTA Vs map is gonna compare to say Hogwarts Legacy or GTA VI

Pretty awesome how big GTAV is, it's such a beast.

And yet V's map feels smaller than the map from San Andreas

That's because GTA V's draw distance is like 15 times bigger than San Andreas'. In GTA SA Definitive Edition instead you can see the all map from the higher skyscraper and you see that the map is not that big.

Even after all these years GTA V’s map still looks like a teenage mutant ninja turtle to me.

I don’t mean that in a disparaging kind of way. Just at a glance.🥹

And yet it's still mind-numbingly boring.

Have to agree. I think Vs map was big but once you left a main section the map was DEAD. It just didnt feel like a well lived place just pockets.

Bro I never noticed but I see it now! If they had more roads and things to do it would be harder to see the turtle

Yet RDR2 map seems at least 3 times the size of GTA V.

GTA V map has such a horrible design and shape.

Why would anyone like to explore an Egg shaped open word? Map has to be more square shaped like San Andreas.

Which sucks, because it matters how big it feels while playing. It never was the intention to be able to overlook the whole map, although the draw distance was that low due to limitations back then. SA catches that "state" vibe perfectly.

Fortnite's map unironically feels bigger than GTA V simply because it's structured better and filled with more biome variety.

Lock n' Stock

GTA V's map taught me that bigger doesn't necessarily mean better. Pretty to look at but empty and hollow.

A large map is fine in and of itself, it just needs to be well-utilized. Sadly, I do not think V succeeds at this; I don't mind the design of Los Santos itself, but over half of the map consisting of (mostly) empty/useless mountains and a detailed (but again, underutilized) ocean floor makes it feel significantly smaller than it really is. It's like the east island in VC being wasted by an empty beach, but on Bull Shark Testosterone steroids. The fact that the map is literally surrounded by a circular highway doesn't help, either; it just makes LS + Blaine County feel too "video-gamey", as opposed to being a natural, believable environment. It's almost like a child's play set (should GSG ever touch V, I really hope they're not taking notes here...).

SA may not be as large as V, but I feel that its map is stronger due to the more varied biomes and the amount of things to do (in most areas) compared to the latter. The fog/"sh*tty" draw distance does wonders to mask the smaller map, too. And then of course there's IV: while even smaller and (arguably) less varied in content than SA, it goes in the opposite direction and aims for "quality over quantity" in its design, as does RDR2 (whose map is still quite large, albeit smaller than V. It does help that you're on traveling on-foot and via horseback, rather than a fast vehicle/aircraft/etc.).
