Why are there no passenger trains in GTA V, only freight trains?

I always liked catching the train in GTA San Andreas, especially hijacking and derailing them 😅. I know there was only one city in GTA V, but they could've put train stations in Sandy Shores and Paleto Bay. It would've made a nice change from having to drive there constantly, plus they could've made it a fast travel option by allowing us to skip the ride.

Because why sit and ride on a train when you could just drive there yourself?

Not only that but you could also just hop on the freight car and ride it yourself

I think they had to compromise and settled for the metro lines through the city. The passenger trains don't need to go anywhere because Sandy Shores and Paleto Bay aren't even that far away and aren't big enough to require another train line that runs elsewhere. I agree derailing the brown streaks on SA was hilarious, especially when they blocked traffic

Driving there gets boring after a while, especially with how long it takes. A fast travel option would be nice.

They're further away than San Fierro or Las Venturas were from Los Santos. The San Andreas map felt big but it's tiny.

I used to think that but they're actually not. It takes the same amount of time to drive around the outside of SA's map as it does in V's. Aside from the obvious draw distances and <10 year old us playing the game for the first time 18 years ago, the other main reason was that the roads aren't direct and they're full of twists and turns. GTA V has a highway going all the way around the map which more or less puts Paleto Bay right outside LS' doorstep

Sir, this is America. And in case you didn't know, infrastructure is very car dependent outside of urban areas like NY or Chicago. Around 90% of people commute by car in LA. You tell people you used public transportation there and they will look at you as if you just told them you're homeless. It would be highly unrealistic to have efficient passenger trains in this game. Don't expect them in Vice City either. Blame America.

Depends if california have usable passenger train system. I dont know...

Well, I think they were just lazy. Freight trains are unstoppable and doesnt need train stations. They were busy making completely useless tram system...

Well most open world games have sh*tty train system, I think because its actually time consuming to make everything working perfectly.

Do players actually use metro in GTA IV? Only usable public transportation system Ive ever seen in any modern game.

Well, you can ride tour buses, so not sure what the whole city planning argument has to to with it in game. It would have been just another feature same as it is in RDR2. Maybe they just overlooked it or cut it due to (console) limitations at the time. If you can ride in a taxi, you can ride in a train, bus, plane etc etc.

I wish they left it in, honestly the rail lines in California are pretty iconic and it feels weird not seeing Metrolink over there.
