In 2021 we was all thinking theres no way they'll wait until 2023...yet here were are.

we're not talking about the same timeframe here, do we? I wasn't around for/anticipating the arrival of GTA V at all, as I was very busy playing Rockstar's best shooter ever, Max Payne 3! In fact, I was "appalled" that every entry on the wire which was supposed to be about MP3 was transformed into a hungerfest for GTA V.

happy new year folks. it's a shame that we didn't get the announcement this year. ever since they started teasing it in February i was pretty much convinced that we would get the announcement and trailer this year. instead we got the leaks. which were pretty cool. but i would rather have the official announcement and trailer than the leaks. I'm guessing it set them back. because why would they start hyping up the fans in the beginning of the year. just for them to not even mention it or hype it up anymore? it's such a shame. i really hope we get the announcement in 2023. preferably in the earlier part of the year.

i don't know about that. but i do know that max payne 3 was the first rockstar game that didn't have any story dlc. some might say it wasn't needed. but i thought there could have been more. even if it was playing as a new character. that was the first sign that rockstar was going downhill. all the dlc was for multiplayer. but at the time i just thought that was only a max payne 3 thing. and when gta 5 came out i thought for sure we would get something as awesome as gta 4s tlad and tbogt. but nope nothing. they were working on them and started to tease them. but we never saw so much as a trailer. that's one of the many reasons why i hate gta online. and here we are with red dead redemption 2. another game that easily deserves so many story dlcs. but it didn't even get one. not even a teaser. red dead online was their priority. but they just abandoned it for gta online anyways. so it's pretty much guaranteed the gta 6 will have no story dlc. i would love to be proven wrong. but it seems like all rockstar cares about is their stupid shark cards.

Maybe it was some sort of internal cope that came out to be reality.

The way I see it:

Early-Mid 2023: Teaser (vaporwave Rockstar logo like the red logo for RDR2)

Mid-Late 2023: Trailer, GTA VI title reveal (still weird how they insist on not explicitly calling it that for now)

Most of 2024 spent revealing more of the game

Late 2024: Release

 

Worst case scenario, early-mid 2025 release but I genuinely think the game is close to being done at this point. Two years seems like a short amount of time until you really think about it. Weren't there also rumors that the game would have a "moderate" release and then be expanded on over time or something like that? I think all of that amounts to a soon-ish reveal to release. Be patient, people.

What? Except IV and RDR1 (and the very first GTA, if you wanna count that), none of Rockstar's games received story DLCs, unless you consider the handheld spinoffs as some kind of story DLC, which they clearly weren't.

okay i guess i worded it wrong. yes i know that the older games don't have story dlcs. i meant it was the first time since rockstar had started the trend of making story dlcs. starting with gta 4. and the last story dlc they did was for la noire. what I'm trying to say is rockstar was making these dlcs. but then stopped after a few games. and doing that is one of the reasons why they have gone downhill as a developer in my opinion.

Yep, pretty sure it was a good part of the reason why they just got rid of comments and CM's commenting on things. That's when it started fading.

They made a conscious decision to move on to future projects and, in the meantime, keep on supporting their online games instead of story expansions. Frankly, I don't blame them. Their story expansions just weren't successful enough, and once online took off, there was no turning back. It was the wiser decision when games of their scale started taking 5+ years to make. Any other diversion would essentially mean even bigger gaps between brand-new releases. I never truly cared about any kind of paid DLCs from any company, as good as they might be. I'd rather they work on new games. And L.A. Noire wasn't even made by them.

 

What I'm curious about is what they're gonna do if they actually go forward with the map expansion plan, adding brand-new cities and locations post-launch. In that scenario, there's an off chance of getting EFLC-like paid expansions with them, while the maps will be free to access in GTAO (maybe GTA+ will come into play for online as well). Both Axios and Bloomberg talked about map and mission expansions but didn't specify anything else. I doubt everything is set in stone at this point anyway.

It seemed like the Story DLC thing was more of an experiment than anything , not to mention Microsoft paid them to develop those expansions for GTA IV from what I’ve read before , so there’s that

Speaking of Max Payne, I bought the trilogy on Steam sale yesterday and can't wait to see what all the fuss is about when it comes to 3 in particular. I've heard the gunplay is phenomenal.

Yeah, IV DLC was part of the deal when IV was first announced at Xbox's E3 conference in 2006, and when it released it was indeed Xbox exclusive for a while.
