I don’t know the ins and outs of how these things works but if they’re still hiring, does that mean we maybe be further from release than previously believed?

AAA studios hire people all the time, that's for sure, and R* is no different. But trying to guess anything certain regarding the release window is basically throwing darts in the dark. We literally have nothing to work with except rumours. The game hasn't yet been properly revealed. I'm not sure if Rockstar themselves even know it for sure. I do believe they're still targeting fall 2024, but that's just my guess.

These big studios are constantly hiring, although I do believe shortly before or right after the February GTA VI "mention" they did start ramping up hiring for more specific roles, and more of them. So it's safe to say it's more of an indicator that they're all-hands-on-deck with GTA VI and the more people, the merrier. Doesn't mean it's earlier or later than expected development-wise, and it's not an indicator of when they fully ramped up development to the max, they're just going all-in as game development is not something where there's "too many chefs", especially not for mammoth projects like this. ;)

I remember people speculating about job listings not long before RDR2 was released, same with GTA V. A new game is in production, potentially in the final year and a half or so, so of course they'll be hiring even more than usual.

Lumen is basically UE5's hybrid solution for implementing dynamic global illumination (GI) and reflections. It goes without saying that nearly every big studio who's working with their in-house engine is also developing similar tech on their own. The difference is we wouldn't get to see it until they reveal a game showcasing that tech, whereas there are loads of Lumen stuff already out there since UE5 is used far more widely than any in-house engine. Just take a look at 4A Engine and Metro Exodus. That game runs at 60fps on current-gen consoles with most RT features enabled (including RTGI), and in no way does it look worse than Lumen. On PC, you can push it even further with proper hardware.

It kind of feels like the RTX (Ray Tracing Texel eXtreme) buzzword all over again, when in reality, RTX is just NVIDIA's implementation of RT plus features like DLSS, just like Lumen and GI.

I thought the same, the textures of the bricks well at first glance resemble those of the IRL, although I would have liked to see the detail that they are glued with cement.

I like it when the textures are like this in 3D, that it is 2D and flat feels weird as if it were from the days of the PS2/PS3 when low ass quality textures were used, I suppose that to have more performance in the game and not sacrificing it for graphic stuff and etc...

I'm losing my mind, I swear I had an extremely detailed GTA VI dream during the night :kekw:

Though maybe it was a prophecy...

Maybe I'm the leaker now..

I had a similar dream a few months before the V trailer

Thank you. Unreal Engine (and open engine) cannot be compared to a bespoke, completely custom engine. Technologies like Nanite and Lumen are great for Unreal devs, but it's nothing so revolutionary that no other AAA studio can't do in their own engine, their own way. Some people are creaming over the concepts being applied to Fortnite, but at the end of the day, as cool as it might be for devs on UE... it's really not that impressive or revolutionary.

It's Direct X 11 and Tessellation all over again. :sadkek:

Not at all, very different, and very different types of tech.

I’d consider it revolutionary in the sense that it’s brining the tech to mainstream. Making it more accessible to everyone will create competition helping push the boundaries of both proprietary and open source engines.

That whole area of tech is a bit of both, tbh. Raytracing (or any similar methods) is a massive part of the future of games, so it's revolutionary in that respect, and impressive in the sense that Epic are pulling off that tech in a large scale battle royale game with tons going on at 60fps.

But it's not exclusive to Lumen or UE5 is the thing, Lumen isn't the future, it's just an Epic's take on the future. All engines will be doing similar things and having their own takes on it, to produce similar results.

The tech and engine consolidation that is going on the industry is concerning to me as it will hurt what I said above from happening (competition is good, even for engines) but the silver lining and exciting thing about UE5 (or 5.1 now, which is what Fortnite is on now) is that UE is a very accessible and easy to use engine whether which means indies have a lot visual toys to play with in their games which should (and is) resulting in some fantastic looking indie games on the horizon. AAA next-gen quality visuals from teams in the single digits is something that's never been practical before but is becoming practical now.

It's probably the best thing about it, stuff like this leads to competition and competition benefits the final product in the long run.

That was more what I was going for, with much more confusing wording. :p
