That's not the primary hurdle. The verb of their actions is the hurdle. How they interact with the world is the hurdle. Without McCarthy's prose acting as the framework, it's supremely difficult to maintain the tone, especially in an interactive medium where players have some level of freedom. I'll describe it as a highwire act where even the simplest error will make the whole thing fall flat on its face.

 

It's not impossible, but definitely a very tall order to properly adapt to any other medium, be it film, television, or games.

American Psycho despises Bateman in every way. It very clearly paints him in a satiric light. If someone fully misinterprets the whole point of the film, then they might be obsessed with him, which is what the internet does.

 

I'll disagree wholeheartedly with GTAV's interpretation being too on the surface. It's very cohesive, more or less in the same vein as American Psycho. People love Trevor the same way they love Bateman, not in small part because Steven Ogg and Christian Bale do such a marvelous job of selling the characters to us.

 

RDR2 is a different kind of experience and has the same level of cohesiveness, which is just as good. TLAD is the odd man out for me. It might probably be better than that show, but in no way is it better than the previous examples.
