What would you change in DYOM?

Let's play a little chosing game.

 

Imagine you have the DYOM source code, programming knowledge, and a lot of free time to change it. What would you change in DYOM?

But there is only one limitation: you can only choose 5 things you would add, and 5 things you would change/correct

 

Stage 1:
Choose 5 things you would add to DYOM (new features), and then 5 things you would change in DYOM (bug fixes, change function behavior, etc);

 

Note that we are only talking about the modification, not the DYOM site, we all know you want a dark theme.

 

Stage 2:
Now, from the list of 10 things you chose (5 additions and 5 changes), choose only 2 additions and 2 changes that you would prioritize.

 

Stage 3:
And finally, from the 4 choices, choose only 1 that you think is the most important and fundamental aspect that you think should be implemented in DYOM.

Here are my personal choices.

 

STAGE 1

ADD

 

Audio section

(Add audio in specific areas, with specific radius, and other more configurations, like ambient audio, and may even give room to make the use of SD discontinued);


Zone section

(Add zones in a three-dimensional cube, being necessary 3 waypoints with the Y (1=x, 2=y, 3=z) forming a zone that would define certain factors as when entering the zone something is triggered (change of stars, death of the player, text display, among others)


Auto-run

(Make the 8 DYOM missions auto-run when starting a new DYOM game, maybe through an ini file)


Camera waypoints

(Instead of adding several camera smooth, a single camera smooth could store waypoints in the same way actors and objects store waypoints to move from one place to another);


Auto-save

(Ability to save the current editor progress every X minutes, value of X editable in an ini file)

 

CHANGES
Fix DYOMtemp bug


Prevent incorrect ID from causing crash

(When entering incorrect ID, program should ignore or automatically enter default ID)


Remove the need to create a static camera for a smooth camera to work properly


Invisible radar bug when starting indoor missions


Make "Mission design by" optional


STAGE 2

It was hard to choose one, but I guess it would be cool to see that being implemented.

Stage 1

Add:

  • Ability to change actor's animatoins without respawn
  • Any ingame animations for actors
  • Function that forces actor to shoot at a certain point
  • Ability to attach actors to vehicles and objects
  • "mission failed" function when actors notice the player

Changes:

  • Increased text field size to 130 characters
  • Player animations work in gameplay moments, not only in cutscenes
  • Player can move during cutscenes (optional)
  • increased objects limit (130 is not bad)
  • Disable health regeneration after teleport objective (optional)

 

Stage 2

Add:

  • Ability to change actor's animatoins without respawn
  • Any ingame animations for actors

Changes:

  • Increased text field size to 130 characters
  • increased objects limit (130 is not bad)

 

Stage 3

  • Ability to change actor's animatoins without respawn

Stage 1:

 

ADD

  • Dialogues text system (when the player is in a certain section of the mission, the text will be shown on the bottom as the character's dialogues)
  • Actors being able to do multiple animations
  • Actor or car must be in checkpoint (similar thing is in DYOM IX only for cars and I think it's really missing in original DYOM)
  • Attaching actors onto a car or an object
  • Carrec system (was used in Mission Maker)

CHANGE

  • No healing when your character is teleported (make it as an option for the creator to choose)
  • Higher text limit for the objectives text (I might be wrong but even the original game itself has higher text limit during its missions)
  • RC vehicles actually being RC vehicles (even though it works in DYOM IX, it's still buggy)
  • The map not showing two yellow squares as the destination when there are two or more checkpoints back to back
  • Being able to edit an object's routepoint when it's placed

Stage 2:

 

ADD

  • Attaching actors onto a car or an object
  • Carrec system

CHANGE

  • The map not showing two yellow destination marks when there are two or more continuous checkpoints
  • Higher text limit for the objective text

Stage 3:

Some of these ideas might not be that easy to be implemented and they were only bunch of things I wanted to see them either being fixed or added but since I saw carrec was used in Mission Maker, I believe there is a possibility to see this system in the DYOM one day 🤷‍♂️
