Given the market for current next-gen consoles, it still seems like Rockstar hasn't moved past console exclusivity.  Look at RDR 2 and the GTA 5 'next gen raytracing' update.  It will likely be another year or so after the first GTA VI release before we see the PC version.  As far as the specs go, given for what we have seen and heard from the leaks to what Rockstar has implemented in previous games, the specs will be similar but higher than the RDR 2 requirements.  There will definitely be some kind of raytracing that they will implement.

Because when RDR2 released on PC as a RGL temporary exclusive their half assed launcher had zero issue whatsoever, what a jolly good time that was :)

Yeah, even their second time releasing any product on that platform was also a major, flawless and totally smooth process, remember that happy time?

Forspoken's getting shat on for a lot of reasons I think are a bit unfair, it's no great game, a 7/10 seems about right based on what I've seen + played of the demo, but yea, it's quite obvious that there's parts of the game where they didn't quite figure out what exactly they wanted the game to be.

that game being so bad has pretty much to do with the fact of the engine they have used. We all know the graphic aspect is not the most important thing of a game but this one is embarrasing in that matter even though it being a next gen only title. besides you just have to to compare what they promised to what they have finally delivered

Visually it's just weird. There are parts when I played the demo where I'm like, that looks really nice... and then there's parts where it's like uhhhhhhhh this doesn't look finished. On top of that aint particularly well optimised, so it's hard to really justify the game being so demanding when it doesn't look that good.

It's demanding a lot similarly to Gotham Knights PC release.

It's a pretty looking game, but it shouldn't be asking for that much horsepower.

The thing I know is that Rockstar managed to somehow make RDR2 run on 2013 hardware, so I am not worried abou the performance of GTAVI in the slightest, on consoles at least.

PC releases have always been a hit and miss with them, maybe with the exception of Max Payne 3 (and I think GTAV), so it remains to be seen how that's gonna go.

You know... when they decide that "it doesn't need additional polishing", a year after the consoles initial release. :prismkek:

My speculation on why E&E wasn't released on PC day 1 is because it was much harder to justify to the PC crowd that they should pay for a raytracing patch, and releasing it on free on PC and charging for it on console wouldn't please the console crowd. If E&E does eventually come to PC I expect it to be free.

PC can be a top selling platform for games these days, even for huge titles like Elden Ring. It is typically on par with Xbox in terms of copies sold on average IIRC.

Throwing away at least a third of your sales isn't good business, and is why most publishers release on PC day 1 now, and those that aren't (Asian devs mostly) are working their way towards PC day 1 releases.

As for why we've seen a lot of dodgy PC versions I'd say that's more in-house engines becoming too complicated for their in-house teams, which is probably why we're seeing so many studios switch to UE5.

Yes, nowadays PC games sales are on par with XBOX, but still the PC ports are horrible. A festival of stutters, low fps and shader compilation issues...

I hope the performance for the steam deck is good but some modern games seem to run fine apart from poorly optimized ports so i think it would run like this:

800p Medium-ish settings 25-30fps depending on what's going on in the scene.

And 800p low wouldn't get more than 40-50fps unless there you're in a less populated part of town.

I think the settings equivalent to Xbox Series S apart from resolution would work best on steam deck for 30fps lock.

Let's hope GTA VI uses DirectStorage 1.2 on PC so we don't have stuttering mess like all other new games.

Yes, and they should put SATA SSD as minimum required spec for PC, no more HDD optimization shenanigans

It'll be like every other modern game and recommend an SSD for sure. DirectStorage isn't a given and it's not really a necessity, just a nicety. Stuttering issues in recent games have to do with runtime shader compilation, which, ironically, is something Rockstar has already mastered pretty well in RDR2 PC. :p An initial set of shaders is compiled at the start (the progress bar you see), then the rest of the shaders are compiled as you play and it doesn't have what DigitalFoundry calls "stutter struggle" in the same way other games do.

I'd argue the opposite is true, X-Box got their asses handed to them last generation, and it was largely due to Sony's stable of high quality single player exclusives.  That's why MS has been gobbling up studios trying to get their own.   I'm not saying that a title as big as GTA is in any danger of going completely exclusive, but a small piece of content or perk of some kind really wouldn't come as a big shock.

I just want it on PC day one

Sadly, i don't think that'll happen.

I'm still holding out hope based on the fact that all but one or two clips from the leak were recorded on functional PC builds of the game, including end user UI elements. Call me naive, call it copium, but I want to believe. I've got funds set aside for a console, though, just in case.

Speaking of which, when it comes to deciding on a console if I end up needing one, I'm curious: are there currently any games that offer 60fps performance modes on the PS5 and XSX, but are strictly limited to 30fps on the XSS? I still do most of my gaming at 1080p so I don't care about resolution, but 30fps vs 60fps would be a deciding factor for me. If I can get 60fps/1080p on an XSS (even if it's upscaled 1080p via FSR) and we don't get the PC version on day one, the cheaper pricetag would take a lot of the sting out of buying a console just for one single game. Of course, even if there aren't any current games that offer 60 on PS5/XSX but only 30 on XSS, VI could still be the first, but I just want an idea of what to expect.

cant remember

Did wonder it too, the leaks seem to suggest it's being tested on Windows?, but I don't know if that's because the XBox is very close to Windows and that's just how game dev is done for that platform or if it's actually the Windows version we're seeing.

I really don't know what to think. On one side every GTA/RDR only came out on PC a year or so after and if GTA6 is on PC day one it would be a first. But On another side most AAA titles I know of have simultaneous releases nowadays, so maybe it's a shift in the industry as a whole that R* will follow?

They were recorded on multiple different versions of Windows as well as multiple different hardware setups, and there were UI elements instructing the user to reduce visual settings to improve performance - something that is common on PC titles (I'm pretty sure the message itself is even a direct copy/paste from RDR2's PC version) but as far as I know isn't possible on consoles, even the current gen consoles which are closer to PCs than ever before. There's no doubt in my mind that they were PC specific builds of the game, but Rockstar could still postpone the PC release even if it's being developed simultaneously with the console versions. It would disappoint me, but it damn sure wouldn't surprise me.

I'd honestly go ahead and buy a PS5 while they're relatively easy to get now. Once GTAVI comes out it's most likely gonna be difficult to get them again, maybe not 2020 difficult but still.

Oh don't even expect them to break their usual pattern which always has been a win for them. Release on console only > Every fan will rush to buy it on their console (Or even buy a console for it like me) > release it again on PC and those fan's that were originally PC players will buy your game twice and also spend a lot of time again to bring their GTAO Progress. This is a strategy not most game devs can do but when they can. If they aren't going to do it, honestly its a dumb decision on their business side (good for us obv)

I am trynna understand this weird idea that people have thinking the game has a "functional PC build" says who? it's dev, that's literally how game dev goes, especially with how close and similar the consoles and PC architectures have gotten since the last generation, just because you saw a arrow doesn't mean it's the PC build.

It doesn't necessarily mean we're getting a PC build day one of course, but the builds they are running are indeed x64 (PC) compiles, there are references to running the game on specific graphics settings (config modes on the top right), console builds wouldn't show OS and GPU info, and there's an error that is word-by-word only available in RDR2 PC about running out of video memory, among a few other things. It's not the arrow. The arrow is part of their debug widgets that also popped up on GTA V development screenshots.

It's not the same as running a game on a PC during development on a "platform agnostic build" (I think R* calls this "emulated" in the V PS3 build log files that leaked in 2013) with nothing PC specific, i.e. running on a PC but there's no graphics settings, no PC specific errors, nothing but some sort of blueprint super basic build running at 5 fps for early dev. Those builds in the videos do have PC specific functionality. Now as I said, this doesn't indeed necessarily mean it'll release on day one on PC, although my personal opinion is that it could especially due to GTA Online.

The clips we saw were of features being play tested on playable builds of the game. As I mentioned in a previous post, some clips even included UI elements that were intended for end users, separate from the developer interface. If the clips were of console builds, they would've been running them on console devkits, not PCs.

Yeah, console builds ran on devkits would not show any system info either (at best console serial numbers, and so on). Those were PC builds, running on PC, because only PC code would query for your computer's OS and specs to show in-game to a developer, among other things mentioned before.

Considering what is known about RAGE on PC, the terminologies and technicalities seen in RDR2 PC, etc. that is indeed, factually, a PC build of GTA VI. Does it mean it's coming out day one? Not necessarily, they may not be doing much work on the optimisation/PC-specific side of things yet. But it is a PC build. It had an executable referred to in its metadata and everything (game_win64_beta.exe).

Win64 is the name of the RAGE compile target for PC. You can see this exact nomenclature in both GTA V and RDR2 PC's compiles (game_win64_(branch))

That doesn't mean a day one PC release. Best case scenario the PC version comes out a few months after the consoles.

Just as an addendum, the codepaths (which refer to the same stock RAGE PC project .exe name) for GTA V and RDR2 PC:

GTAV:

KSnCn61.png

RDR2:

Lu4PvsV.png

It goes as follows: (project)*_(platform)_(type). PS4 builds will say Orbis in the middle, Xbox One builds will say Durango, PS5 builds (i.e. GTA V Gen9) will say Prospero, Xbox Series I believe Scarlett, PC will be win64.

*Since GTA V this has always been "game", I guess that's their blank slate project name.

Does not mean it, nobody is saying that it 100% does. But personally, I still think there's a possibility considering how much more focus they've put on PC since GTA V/RDR2, and how much bigger GTA Online is, they'd want to get PC players getting in on it quickly too, plus double dipping isn't as much of a popular strategy as it used to be years ago, it'll be 2024 or whenever, PC releases are the norm day one now pretty much.

You're misunderstanding the whole PC/console architecture stuff. Consoles do contain the same architecture as your typical PC (x86), yes, but there's more to us knowing, for a fact, that we saw a functioning PC build.

Spider said as much already but for another easy one, current gen consoles are all AMD - as are last gen I believe as well. Console dev kits naturally run on all AMD hardware as well.

In one of the videos we saw the game running on nVidia hardware. Ergo, game was running on PC.

Again this doesn't mean it'll release day 1 on PC, I've spoken before that I believe there's multiple reasons why they may release it day 1 on PC, but given R*'s history no one can really say for sure on that one.
