Yea.... nVidia don't need GTA to sell gaming GPU's lol. They have the market well and truly cornered to the point they've been able to set the prices at whatever they want and get away with it.

Not to mention, GPU's are a tiny portion of their business now, they're a 3 trillion dollar company, which has been driven almost entirely by the fact that if you want AI hardware you have to go to nVidia.

Yep, AI is the major market for Nvidia, and they've well and truly cornered that market from a hardware perspective.

If Intel & AMD do manage to catch up to and rival Nvidia consumer grade GPUs (big if), I wouldn't be surprised to see Nvidia exit the GPU market. Would it really be worth the R&D, production, marketing, support, repair and replace costs for them if they're fighting for market share? Probably not.

Don't see nVidia leaving the market tbh, the GPU market for them is a nice way to show off new technology and just in general keep them relevant in the public mindshare.

AMD can't even match them on hardware let alone the software/tech, everything they do is a reaction to nVidia, they haven't brought anything new to the GPU market in yonks. Intel are doing okay by basically copying nVidia but they're still miles away from actually competing with them in the core GPU market, their cards are mostly low to low-med range cards with wonky drivers.

It doesn’t matter why they follow their outdated platform policy, but to watch when it comes out on xbox but passes by the PC in this day and age is borderline fantastic, especially how weak Microsoft’s console is and Microsoft’s relationship with its console.
By the way, I don’t understand why the console audience is happy that PC players will have to buy a console if they want to play on the first day, this is a one-time promotion, those fools who do this will remain on the PC. Sony can only benefit if you completely switch to their console.
By the way, this whole situation especially looks funny considering that GTA, unfortunately, is now primarily an online game, even Sony understands that such games need to be released everywhere at once.

The console audience gloating about (timed) exclusivity, Rockstar or otherwise, has always been an obnoxious, disheartening thing to see; it's just as bad as, if not worse than the people who take the "Glorious PCMR" meme at face value, IMO. I remember people (admittedly, a vocal minority) going out of their way to spoil RDR2's plot on social media the second the PC version was announced. I suppose out of spite that the game was no longer exclusive to specific machines? And that's not even getting into the unwarranted anger from PlayStation fans when Sony began porting their games to PC starting with Horizon Zero Dawn in 2020 (but once again, it was thankfully just a small group complaining).

I understand first-party platform and/or timed exclusivity to an extent (although it's really just Nintendo doing the former at this point), but I could never comprehend the toxic mindset of outright celebrating when a certain chunk of the market is unable to play a game.

Platform wars have always been stupid but they somewhat made sense in the 2000's and early 2010's because Sony and MS leaned into it, but nowadays both companies are releasing on other platforms, as are virtually all 3rd party publishers too. The platform wars are now just... dead, over, they don't exist anymore, but sadly social media these days is what it is and there's small groups of people that love to hate stuff.

So does this mean a hot title everyone eager to give a try won't boost actual numbers in current gpu market, and the market refuse to follow the wave eh?Sadly some people do bother to get the most powerful new thing to try the fancy paint, and nvidia still willing to take advantages from it as well like a typical promotion ad in case sometimes you  forget about their existence .Otherwise why  they choose to collab with cd red for cp2077 over and over again? Why advanced video game graphics tech is dominated by them all the time?As the market winner they don't actually need to invest all these stuff into the industry anyway, but they do tending to cook the meal with some decent sauce to make you have to stick with it no matter what despite the controversies. Just the perfect example of monopoly, don't you think?

Would you consider Steam to be a monopoly? They have by far the best PC launcher and most PC games are only available there.

Just like Steam, NVIDIA isn't in a monopoly situation (at least when it comes to consumer-grade GPUs), they just offer arguably the more complete product. What is AMD doing to avoid this situation? Not much, they're playing catchup on every single feature, their Windows drivers are still not as mature as NVIDIA's and their pricing isn't that much lower than NVIDIA cards... And this comes from someone with an AMD card :)

NVIDIA is in a position where they don't even care about gaming GPUs market share, they make their big bucks thanks to AI and professional products. As Jason said, the gaming division is just an easy way to market their tech to the masses, it's also quite cheap considering that gaming GPUs are basically cut down versions of their top of the line professional chips.

Being the market leader doesn't mean you can sit down and relax, otherwise your competitors will eventually catch up. It's totally normal that they invest in new tech, and thankfully I would say! Did they have to work on DLSS or RT to keep their market lead? No, but those 2 things have changed the industry for the better to the point where even Intel and AMD had to copy them in some way.

You said in your post that it'd be a "huge problem" for nVidia if a 5090 can run VI on max cause they wouldn't be able to sell the 6090s, but that's just not a thing like it is on console, or with a Pro console.

The types of people who buy X090 tier nVidia GPU's are typically the people who will buy new GPU's as they come out, not because a new game has come out. Rich people, enthusiasts, professionals (content creators etc) and people like that.

I mean the 4090 is I think the most successful GPU of the 4000 series, but that's not because it's good value (it actually went up in price cause a ton of companies bought them in bulk for AI work) but because the other 4000 cards were awful value and didn't sell. Has that been a problem for nVidia? In a way... but they've went from a $1 trillion dollar company to a $3 trillion dollar company in the span of like 12 months because of their AI division. So the use of "problem" here is relative.

Is it good nVidia have a monopoly on gaming and AI GPU's? Of course not, but they placed their bets on AI early and are reaping the profits, and they invested in the hardware and tech for their GPU's and are repeating the profits. That's just the way it's gone.

yeah lmao, many of my friends are going to buy a ps5 for like 1 month or so and then sell them, this seems a common consious among the pc community so i don't know why console companies would think it would benefit them,it would benefit take 2 for double dipping and tripple dipping(looking at you ps6....)
