Old school Saints Row

Made this thread for anyone who wants to talk about the older Saints Row games (Saints Row 1-4) with maybe an emphasis on the first two or three games. Also doubling as a wishlist or concept thread for any remakes or proper reboots of the older titles.

Thought this would be good because as much as I like ragging on the reboot that sh*t's getting tiring.

I love SR4 as perfect superhero game, they unironically made perfect game in that genre and abandoned it instantly. They are kings of bad decisions, sadly...

Imagine if they did some spin off based of this. I only hope...

Also I felt in love with SRTT as perfect game to mess around. Air strike towards mascots? Yeah why not! Using tank as tool to destroy gang hideout, perfect idea!

I have SR2 on gog, but I heard it have some technical issues. I dont try it yet, and I have Gat out of Hell as backlog. So thats it!

I bought all these games after SRTT impress me a lot.

They missed a really good chance to have an actual mafia family as one of the gangs you had to fight in 1 and 2 tbh

your best pal

never dipped into the franchise. back then my younger brother had something saints row-ish installed, it was the part where you have a dubstep-gun. so SR 3 or maybe 4, I think?! there was also a weird drive-by mechanic iirc, that sh*t was so over the top and the visual aspect in general didn't feel right to me - so I just got up and said "I'm getting too old for that sh*t" and left.

This may be a controversial claim but SR 2 stilwater is the best open world in it's Genre. I mean, hear me out. The areas were varied, you had crack head, crime ridden neighborhoods, suburbs, trailer parks, beaches, malls, high end strip malls, casinos(which you can enter!) and an airport. You had buyable apartments which were all different and upgradeable. The interactivity was great for it's time too! You can car surf, mug people, rob stores, go streaking, do drive bys on other gangs, and hunt for hidden areas. Not to mention if you leave your character idle, they might go off and do something random like smoke, go fishing, etc.

Don't forget one of the best parts of stilwater: true random events. Sometimes you would go into a store only for it to be robbed by someone else, maybe a woman is streaking with on lookers giving her a thumbs up, perhaps you encounter a barbershop quartet( and blow them up with a sticky bomb), and there are mundane things like people moving laundry, browsing their laptops, etc. point is, the world felt alive! Not to mention that people would either taunt you or compliment you depending on if you control the territory or not and the fact that peds comment on the games current events.

Now, there are other games that do some of these with varied success but SR 2 is the only game to have all of these features and do them well. Oh, and it has interiors to boot!

tbh they should’ve remastered 1 instead of 3. Who the f*ck asked for a remaster of 3?!?!?

1 and 2 are obviously great games, but I’ve come around to SRTT and IV over the last few years.

When I played those games for the first time like most people my first thought was “WTF is this sh*t?”, but when I stepped back, cooled off and just played them leaving judgment behind I really liked them. IV especially is crazy as f*ck, but they have an odd charm about them I just adore for reason and I say that as someone who generally prefers more grounded and sensible games.

I mean even I have to admit making some buff dude as the U.S president with the voice of Nathan Drake is pretty cool.😛

Anyway maybe they’re not quite as good 1 and 2, but still good in their own right. I do hope to see 1 and 2 remastered/remade. Particularly 1 since it was only a 360 exclusive back in the day.

Bumping this topic, because there are rumors of a Saints Row IV remaster in the works.

I could see two scenarios from this: either Sperasoft and/or Gearbox are working on a brand new remaster of SRIV similar to the SRTT remaster two years ago, or, more likely, the Re-Elected version of SRIV will just be a straight port of the PS4/Xbox One release from early 2015, which I haven't heard good things about, and that's saying a lot, considering that Saints Row IV was the buggiest game in the series until the release of the 2022 reboot (though, I enjoyed Saints Row IV more than the reboot).

Once again, our hopes of a remaster of Saints Row 1 and 2 were dashed. I'm still waiting for the day when someone reverse engineers the code for SR1. Plus, the SR2 patch is still stuck in development hell. I get that SRTT and SRIV sold incredibly well, but still.

The PC version of Saints Row IV: Re-Elected is gonna be released on the Epic Games Store on December 8th. (except it was actually quietly released on PC back in 2019 on the Microsoft Store)

And just as I suspected, this is just a straight port from the PlayStation 4/Xbox One release that was released around the same time as Gat Out of Hell, just with added crossplay support.

Honestly, I don't see much point in getting this release if you already have the original (Legacy) version on Steam or GOG with all of the DLC.

EDIT: Turns out it's also releasing as a free upgrade for people who already own the Game of the Century Edition on Steam or GOG.

Original Light

Saints Row 2 was the San Andreas of Saints Row games, and I mean that in a very good way. It did so many things, and all fairly well. Really a game ahead of its time.

Yea I'd agree with that. SR2 was the game where they had firmly established the foundations of where they wanted to take the series so with SR2 they could focus on just making a really good game with lots to do and see. In hindsight SR3 was a very weird curveball for the series, why they felt the need to go that direction I will never really understand, they made some fun games but long term put them the franchise in a very weird position because of it. Now they have to balance the OG fans and the post SR3 fans and that's just an impossible task really.

Hope we get that SR2 patch at some point. Really want to replay it, but god damn is setting it up too much of a pain for me to bother with.

Yup. Not sure why we had to go from a literal street thug Julian and Troy recruited off the street to the CEO of a company? Like no, I wanna be the street thug.

That's sort of a problem created by the sequel nature of the original series, they had to go up and up and up to stop the story being basically start from nothing > build to the top > lose everything you built > build back up > repeat. It's still sorta this from a gameplay perspective but the way the stories play out in order to "reset" the gang is basically them going "we know it's sh*t, but deal w/ it".

Played through Saints Row 1 for the first time earlier in the year (thanks Xenia emulator). Quite an enjoyable experience for me considering I began the series with SR2 (didn't own a 360 to play the original, you see).

One thing I can definitely agree that Stilwater was a much better-designed and inspired city than Steelport. Felt more lively, diverse, and had a nice Midwestern vibe to it. Top island was upscale with commercial districts and clean suburbs, while the bottom island was far less inviting with run-down ghettos and industrial areas (even after Ultor gentrified a bunch of neighborhoods). Steelport on the other hand? Meh, just a bland Pittsburgh knock-off where everywhere (save for the commercial district) pretty much looked the same, and was pathetic in terms of size (which made planes rather pointless). Santo Ileso looks to be an improvement in some areas, just a shame it's stuck in such a sh*t game.

tbh if they stuck with the original idea of playing as young Julius or w/e in 70s stilwater for SR2 we never would’ve been in this big dumb issue

Take away the datedness of it, which is perfectly understandable, and Stillwater still holds up great. Tons of variety and character and it feels like a real city in the way that it's laid out with it's distinct neighbourhoods and districts.

Another way to put it is that despite Steelport being the more recent city in my memory (albeit I've not played any SR in years), I still vividly remember loads of locations from Stillwater in my head. I remember virtually nothing from Steelport.

For what it was, Steelport was...fine. It just felt like a step back creatively. Certainly not as grand as it's concept art made it out to be.

A lack of budget and time is probably to blame, in fairness.

Steelport was a big issue but also, in hindsight, a symptom of SR3 and beyond.

Maybe it's just me, but I've been thinking about it for the past hour and I can scarcely remember SR3-4 and all, I remember general stuff but nothing memorable in terms of moments or small details. SR2? I remember the minigames, the singing along to the radio, the map and more. SR3's only memorable moment was the penthouse mission at the start of the game, which was a good use of music but something they later tried to repeat over and over with limited success.

Now I'm also starting to hope that SR2 patch comes out one day, lol.

So, the Re-Elected version of Saints Row IV was released on EGS, Steam and GOG yesterday, and it launched with its own issues that players have reported:

  • The savefiles from the legacy version are not compatible with the Re-Elected version, as loading them in Re-Elected will cause the game to crash (probably due to DLC-related issues).
  • The Re-Elected update breaks mod compatibility.
  • When launching Re-Elected, it also autoruns the Epic Online Services in the background and forces you to link your Steam and Epic Games Store accounts, even if you didn't buy the game on EGS. The Epic Online Services will also keep running for whatever reason even after you quit the game. This also applies to the "legacy" version, too.

Why is it so difficult for Volition to release a stable game? They better fix the Epic Online Services issue ASAFP.

I can’t be the only one who thinks the adult swim station in SR3 was absolute cringe, am I? It aged terribly (the show the host is on got cancelled a year after the game came out iirc) and it just feels like it’s pandering to the demographic that SR3 was designed for, eleven year olds who stay up late watching adult swim

I see it more as a nice period piece station for that early-2010s skate hipster era. It also had bangers like Idiot by the Wavves, Anarchy by Odd Future and that one MF Doom song.
