cant remember
I'm wondering if I'm the only one with this sentiment, but I never cared for the ability to fly in the series. Sure being able to explore the map from a helicopter and jump out to parachute is interesting, but what is the point of including business jets and jet airliners. There is nothing to do except turning the airplane around, it's basically the manta ray demo disk of the PS1. You fly from Los Santos to your Sandy Shore strip in 20 or 30 seconds. IMO a small propelor aircraft is where GTA should draw the line of still being reasonable and not getting into the realm of completely goofy and useless just to say "hey look the map is so big we have planes!", except the map really is never nowhere big enough to be able to support flight as a legitimate mode of transportation. It's only useful to goof off. wise_man, Algonquin Assassin, NightmanCometh96 and 6 others 8
Ondr4H
Me neither... Well in GTA:SA at least planes have purpose. There are four civilians airports, you can use plane for quick travel. But in GTA V? There is no Hydra, no dogfights with military planes, there is only Trevor airstrip to land from LS airport, I cant even fly endlessly as I used to in San Andreas. sabitsuki, iiCriminnaaL, H-G and 8 others
Telephone
I agree, I'd say planes in GTA V are pretty useless. At least in San Andreas you had different airports and you could actually buy a plane ticket. Also, CJ in the story gets a flight license so it makes sense for the main character to fly planes. In GTA V you only have one airport, two desert strips and a military base. There is no point for having airliner which you can only land in Los Santos airport. They should have executed the flying aspect of the game better, in my opinion. sabitsuki, Ondr4H, MekhiSkyline and 2 others 4
AkshayKumar
For me flying missions are the least fun. Tru Company and iiCriminnaaL
Tru Company
I'm torn. On one hand, I like being able to fly and explore (but you already covered that in your op so yeah) on the other hand I get exactly what y'all are saying. Maybe it's mainly just for the aesthetics and something for you to look at, aside from just flying from point a to b. Tbh imagine if we still had the Dodo from GTA 3. My was that a nightmare to fly. I too despise flying missions. my 2centz iiCriminnaaL
Bella Odessa
I mean yeah, but I only agree because I'm just bad at flying in general. Unless I'm on my mk1 or mk2 oppressor, or even the jetpack, I dread flying otherwise lol Tru Company
billiejoearmstrong8
Flying planes in GTA is annoying. Always seems unnecessarily fiddly and I hate how they break so easily when landing. When they're not there I don't miss them. Tru Company, Algonquin Assassin and iiCriminnaaL
Algonquin Assassin
Planes are overrated like the jet pack. This isn’t Flight Simulator. iiCriminnaaL, Comrade Monke and B Dawg
smokeless6
Like many others I'd imagine, I come from a sim background. Falcon 4, Jane's F/A-18, all the WW2 and WW1 prop sims. Helo sims. Not civilian sims though. When I decided to take a punt on GTA 5 years ago it wasn't for the flying, that's for sure. Honestly the physics and controls suck. They really do. And as long as we're talking about fixed wings, I can't disagree with the vibe so far in this thread. They aren't fun, are far from realistic, and I ignore them almost entirely except to do Trevor missions or get to Cayo. Now helicopters, that's a different thing. I love flying helicopters in and around Los Santos. The physics still suck, and the controls do too. And what's with the bobbing about, like being in a small boat in choppy waters. But it is redeemed by the map. Seriously, I really like flying helicopters around the city. Such a great environment for it. Black Shark it is not, but I have so much fun doing it. Between the skyscrapers, under bridges, alighting on and in the most unsuitable spots. In GTAO I have a hangar full of whirlybirds, and Franklin has them in post-end story mode. Had to spend all that money on something! I have a full HOTAS (Cougar) and pedals (Crosswinds) but I'm happy in GTA with just a controller. Well, I ignore the way it feels, to bask in the way it feels if you know what I mean. Many times I fire up GTAO to spin the wheel in the casino and then have a bash about Los Santos in one of my helicopters. That's it, that's the session. And other times I choose any mission to do that can be done with a helicopter, like Headhunter, Sightseer, Lester's Denial of Service and that sort of thing. My favorite way to spend time in GTAO. sabitsuki
Flying felt more like a novelty feature than anything tbh. Just something they're obliged to put in because of the kids. Jeansowaty and Xane_MM
bahraini_carguy
I feel like I'm the only one here who enjoys flying in GTA lmao, Be it helicopters or planes. That being said, i feel like not having a second city with it's own proper airport in GTA 5 was a missed opportunity. Would have made flying a bit more useful or at least more interesting (GTA San Andreas comes to mind). Tru Company
Jeansowaty
I can't count how many times people bitched that IV is a sh*t game because "it has no planes". Let that f*cking sink in. Ryo256, Xane_MM, Space Cowboy and 4 others 6

Let that f*cking sink in. Imagine being so shallow you define how bad (or good for that matter) a game is because of a relatively insignificant vehicle. However I do remember the petulant whining starting before the game was even released. iiCriminnaaL, Jeansowaty and Ryo256
Pistol Bobcat
I'm one of the biggest flying fanatics you'll meet and can perfectly understand the lack of planes in IV, where am I gonna land a Shamal in LC when taking Roman bowling, Star Junction? Same with 3D Liberty City, the Dodo is an iconic last gimmick to mess around with (I heard about the guy who flew it for days just because he could) but the helicopters you could make a good effort to steal in LCS really enriched the game. Comrade Monke
I think VC is reasonable: you have a plane you can use if you want and is mandatory in one mission, but that's it, we aren't flight simulator. Xane_MM and Algonquin Assassin
