Why would R* show their game unfinished and buggy, when it's already the single most anticipated game release ever?

Hey.

 

Long time lurker here. I have used GTAF since about 2008, and was really active from about 2008-2015. 

 

I have made a new account just to say this as I think it needs to be said.

 

Let's touch upon the most important thing first:

 

This is colossal. Everything I'm seeing looks legitimate and the rumours are aligning with this. From the bonnie/clyde storyline [I see two apparent protags] to the Vice City setting and even references I've seen to other GRAND THEFT AUTO games [ie: the tech guy who was killed in V as spoken by the junkie]. While this material probably isn't massively polished [perhaps 1-2 years away from that], it certainly is something, and the depth to this material is quite indisputable IMO. This is either the most elaborate fake I have seen, or real. I'm 90% sure it's the latter.

 

So what this mean, and what is there to say? First and foremost, this will probably end the era of game designers sitting on content for a stupid amount of time to build hype [in this instance a decade]. The cyber reality of the modern world means attacks like this are increasingly common. Building up huge hype without saying anything is not only exploitative of fans, but opens companies up to absolutely colossal hacks such as this one. The bottom line: what's the point? This probably would not have happened had Rockstar given us something already. The game is seemingly in some kind of workable state, to the extent that they probably could've done something, even concept art with a logo on it. They could've said something and they know it, instead they stayed silent, riding off the time-induced hype. I'm sure their teams will be saying the same thing now: "we should've dropped some concept art and been in control of the initial content drop! Now everybody knows about the game and it's from an incomplete leak!" Quite damaging is an understatement. 

 

Legally speaking, I wish you all the best OP. The finest IP lawyers in the world will be working on this case right now from the City of London. They would've been called in over the weekend on gold standard pay to manage this breach. People will be hunting you like a shark.

 

I also have to thank you. This probably marks a shift in how game designers view hype cycles.

 

We will probably never see a wait for a game as long as we have done for GTA6 without receiving anything ever again.

 

It's simply too big of a risk now. Their approach has necessitated this kind of attack by desperate fans IMO. You simply can't sit on a follow up to the most successful media of all time and not say anything for almost ten years. The world does not work like that anymore. 

 

Put simply, this is an historic attack. It will have implications that go beyond the gaming industry.

One final comment. The damage of this leak has stripped them of a HUGE amount of media attention. I imagine Rockstar wanted to announce the Latina protagonist to give their brand a more positive image, after previous headlines the business faced [ie: violent kids, hot coffee]. This has now been stripped as everybody knows the protag is clearly a latina woman. The announcement of GTA6 will also not be a surprise anymore, so that's two zinger pieces of news that have lost their zing factor. What's bad about this is that they have lost control of the hype. Usually hype is managed for media releases very carefully to ensure people don't get bored. It's a constant baiting of the audience up until release. I imagine their marketing department have an ultra specific and well-studied plan for the marketing based on psychological studies. This has now gone up in the air. The team will be having to rethink it all on Tuesday.

OP said the videos were hacked from some devs slack account, most likely after they were sharing it with other devs. They won't be sharing the entire source code on slack .

deffo, r*know that if they do anything against these leaks they essentially reveal gta 6, I feel like r* will just not respond at all to maintain their behaviour of being obscure / very concise in their communications concerning new games.

Just watched all the videos, and I have to say, watching this unfinished development footage has gotten me more hyped than any game in the last decade (with the exception of RDR2).

 

This leak is so huge, there's no way Rockstar won't acknowledge it one way or another. It's just insane.... can't wait to see what the finished game will look like.

It's not just that though. Assuming this is true, they just experienced a major security breach to an unknown extent.

Obviously there's the whole "if they dmca it proves it's real" situation, but they've already announced the game. We know it exists, and that it's in development. The problem is that someone gained access to a scary amount of their systems and as such we don't actually know how much data this guy access. 

I mean, if he really did go as far as to steal source code, who's to say there weren't some databases containing sensitive information that he also didn't attempt to access in some way. You see the problem? We're all looking at the game files he seemingly stole, but what about the rest of the data R* holds from their users?
