Rockstar banning the well done VR mod for Red Dead 2, was really uncalled for imo

Will the game be delayed because of leaks?

Or rather: has this ever happened before? (Source code leaked so delayed game).

no, if anything itll be revealed earlier

this happened with ubisoft where they dmca'd leaks of ac and were forced to reveal their game(s) earlier. following the pattern, take-two has dmca'd videos of leaks already so theyre pressured.

I’ll be very disappointed if this game is held back by the past generation of consoles, it would be so much wasted potential.

GTA V ran on base PS3 with 256 mb of ram , lowest settings possible , but still next-gen.

Hi, professional programmer here. You are vastly overstating the issue with source code being leaked (which isn't entirely confirmed, only partial unverified leak of a very small fraction of code).

Developers wouldn't need to change much, if anything, about the game. Maybe some changes to security of online components - but this is actually probably a good thing for the end user, Rockstar has been pretty lax on its online security.

The biggest impact this has is only a business one, it devalues potential trade secrets in a sale of intellectual property. Which doesn't seem likely to happen anyway. It won't delay the game, it's just annoying for the people who work there.

John Cena saving us all once again.

Yeah, people don't realise how much sh*t 10x more critical than vidya games got source code leaked. Even f*cking Windows src was leaked at least 5 times (Win 10 included). And the worst thing that happened to Microsoft due to this was the fact that everyone knows now how sh*tty their code is :kekw:

ThrowawayProgrammer

For anyone curious my take as a dev in regards to the source code (potentially) leaking:

First off most devs are very happy to share source code and I would say 80+% of them would be okay with source code being released to projects (that have shipped) they have worked on during their careers. And open source is generally favoured with devs in the industry more widely.

However, when source code like this leaks. A game (not announced) in it's entirety sold online for no less than "5 figs" is just sad all around no dev wants that, and this is not transparency or open source, it is theft.

Imagine if you were slowly putting a car together in your garage. you had spent years doing so and it you got the engine in and you were just getting the chassis pieces put back on. When all of a sudden some person steals this half-broken car and sells it at a car show using your name, "ThrowawayProgrammer's car - for same special deal for no less than 5 figures".  Rightly so, people would be looking at this half-broken car going "hmm, it doesn't look so great", and you as an experienced car-put-togetherer anticipate this, and it's why you do it in your garage behind-closed-doors. I guess to put the analogy to rest, it feels that simultaneously your work has been stolen and invalidated, not because of the actual theft, but your control over how the world see's it, the first impression. Of course, the code has not been stolen like some bank heist, R* still has the code and they always will. But no matter what they do from here, the game will always be tied back to this clearly pre-alpha version of the game, an alpha for reference being feature complete (which these videos clearly show is not the case).

I guess what people really want to know is:

Will it delay the game?  Probably not. R* is a massive company and they will not have started working on this game with such a fragile environment that leaks would effect the planned shipping date. However, if they intended to ship an online version of the game Day 1, this will probably be affected.

Will they have to re-write the source code? Similarly to the above question, probably not. With the key exception of the multiplayer stuff. They will likely need to tighten up the security of this to make sure that there are no obvious loop-holes for hackers to take that were taken care of by "Security-by-obscurity" which for the record is quite common in most large-scale software projects as you generally run out of time to cover all your bases.

What about GTA5/6 clones? These are unlikely to gain any real traction as it will be very obvious to rockstar when their copyright/IP has been infringed using their own source code they can easily compare it with suspect games to determine if code was stolen similar story with the assets.

Leaking the source code wouldn't be so bad for the devs... It's bad for the devs not because the whole world will see their 'bad' code or whatever, but the fact that unfinished, unpolished work is now out in the wild. This shizz spreads like wildfire and you end up with large groups of people convinced you are doing the game a dis-service by chosing one feature over another feature etc. This is a living nightmare. This is kind of what happened with value and the Hl2 leak in the early 2000s some would say it made the game better but thats not a reason for it to have happened.

Anyways, please send the devs some love - they are going to have to work extra hard to get this game out to all the awesome and caring folks who are waiting patiently for their copy.

If the footage is recent (like this year) the game is probably several years away, if the footage is indeed from 2019 as some have speculated (and sort of confirmed by Jason Schreier) it's very likely that the game was about to be announced anyways and it's probably only one or two years away. I suspect that given this situation, an announcement is virtually guaranteed and right around the corner.

Man I can't believe I woke up to this today. This dude really opened Pandora's Box. Really awesome footage but knowing that he has any source code, Rockstar will definitely delay this game.

With such a large event like this it's only natural unfortunately, perhaps best to look at some of the other more specific threads about specific subjects. There will be random discussion, opinions from all spectrums, etc. so when thousands of people are posting at once it's just difficult by nature.

Unfortunately, yes. This is why so many forums get unnecessarily bloated.

Lean back, have some beer/tea/coffee and start reading from the beginning...slowly = More enlightment than hasty reactions/triple questions.

This wasn't a hack. The leaker got access to R* India's internal Slack server and everything posted within it.

Not in today's age. 750k is chump change but considering yesterday we didn't know who the f*ck this guy was and now today he's a literal Rockstar (no pun intended) to a lot of people, this just keeps getting better and better.

Rockstar Toronto based on what has been said from people with connections to R*. And yes, it was a hack. They got access to Slack and many other things

"Bethesda Softworks has asked us to not promote any images or videos of OpenMW running Morrowind on Android or other mobile platforms, and we agreed to comply with this request. Anything else, is fair game, such as displaying videos of OpenMW running the OpenMW-Template on Android on the blog."
way better compared to how R* handled re3 and revc

He'll also likely live with paranoia / fear as T2 will be fully on him for a long time. No chance of working in the industry and probably no chance of doing anything within the US.

Chump change or peanuts, sometimes companies will accept the deal, see Somalia piracy hostages.
