I want to modded GTA be on different drive than non-modded one (Im using Steam). So basically I have 2 drives, D and E and I want on D to have normal GTA and on E to have modded one. How I can do that?

You will need to use Symbolic Links to redirect the folders but I don't have the Steam version so I don't know how its folders are set up.

I have seen Steam users mention Symbolic Links before for doing this, so that's definitely the way to go. IIRC it uses the mklink command and batch files but I haven't used mklink through DOS so I don't know what the exact syntax is.

Can you give me link to one of the threads telling about mklinks?

It was years ago (probably 4 years to be precise)... I can't remember what the links were.

I use symbolic links myself but I have the retail version and I wrote my own custom launcher, so what I know won't work with the Steam version. Maybe try asking on the 5Mods forums as I know there are a lot of Steam users on there... it is also more active than these forums. I think one of the users who uses them is a moderator on there, meimeiriver is a Steam user and as far as I remember, was the one using mklink.

  • 3 weeks later...

There's an even better way to do this than using two drives. Use two folders on the same drive. This is how I keep two copies of the game on a small SSD.

Install GTAV in the path C:\Games\GTAV.

Then rename C:\Games\GTAV to C:\Games\GTAV.mp

Copy C:\Games\GTAV.mp to C:\Games\GTAV.sp

Get this tool called dupe merge: https://schinagl.priv.at/nt/dupemerge/dupemerge.html

run "dupemerge c:\games\GTAV.mp c:\Games\GTAV.sp"

Then, instead of using twice as much disk space, the two directories each contain the exact same content.

Do this "mklink /d gtav gtav.mp" when you want to play online. Delete gtav and run "mklink /d gtav gtav.sp" when you want to run, or mod, your single player game. Since mods should never affect the original files if you use OpenIV, your single player mods will never affect the mp files. You save 108GB of space on your SSD.

If you don't want to run dupemerge, you can use mklink to recreate all the directories with RPF files manually, but... boring. The for command will make doing this manually faster in each directory: ie:  for %F in (*.rpf) do mklink /h %F c:\games\gtav.mp\subdirectory\%F
