Did I just lose my character?

Am on PS5.

 

Wanted to join a public GTA Online session from the main menu.

Game asks me to chose a saved character (?), both slots empty.

Out of confusion, I pressed ok, game sends me into character customization (as if I started from scratch) and now I can't find my original character anymore.

 

My original character was rank 280 and had 22 million GTA$. This new character is down on rank 120, also 22 million $. With the only difference of all my properties, vehicles and items being gone.

 

Can I get my character back? Is it gone forever? Why did the game make me create a new character?

I am so confused, I don't play Online that often, can someone help?

What if you go to pause menu > online > swap character and try changing character again?

Its' not there anymore, just this new lvl 120 one and a completely new one with Level 1.

Looks to me like you overwrote the old one. I would contact Rockstar Support asap, maybe they have a backup.

Damn I hope not, but sure does look like it ...

Contacted them as soon as it happened but so far, no answer

 

Looks like I have to start grinding again
