Disconnected for inactivity?

What the heck?

 

So, this happens a LOT.  I'll be doing this or that, and I'll tab away from the game to check email, or do an internet search or some such, and when I tab back, say 30 seconds later, I'm met by the message, I've been disconnected for being inactive for too long.  I mean... THIRTY SECONDS?!??!

 

Is this a bug?  Is there some way around this nonsense?

Sometimes you do look like some classic RDO 'troll' that hates GTAO, and just wants to trash on it for everything  ...even if it is like well known decade year old thing 

 

That will happen when your game is in 'fullscreen' mode, so switch your game to 'borderless window' and you are going to have usual 15mins, and you can ALT+TAB to other programs without any problem  

If borderless window wont work for you, then it is some local problem on your computer!

Also, RS did change AFK system so you cant watch in-game TV for it - for (forever) AFK you need to watch some of your 'security camera' screens (or to run in circles )

The inactivity timer is only like 45 seconds long if you got the game Alt+Tabbed, normally it's 15 minutes, while it's not Alt+Tabbed.

 

Maybe a workaround is playing it in borderless window mode, but im not sure, maybe it also recognises that you are not active in the window while doing other stuff on your computer.

 

The acitivity timer only works in Online mode, you can be inactive in Single Player as long as you like.

 

Edit: That is why, when i know i will google stuff, or do other stuff, i just boot up my gaming laptop too, or use my Tablet or Smartphone.

And yeah the inactivity timer always was a thing in Online Mode.

Go to the car meet, enter the test track, drive to the exit so you get the "enter/exit car meet" options, that's idleproof. And you'll get some hats.

They changed it on Xbox as well, if you "minimise" the game in any way, say to read a message or check a screenshot, it kicks you well before the normal fifteen minutes.

At least on PC (I don't have the game on consoles) it's always been a shorter timer when minimised since release, I believe two minutes (which easily passes). If you maximise the game in the meantime, and unpause, you can see a message like: "Time before you are kicked for inactivity: 01m30s". I've minimised the game for a short time recently and didn't get kicked before the two minutes, but it is a short timer so if you're doing something a bit more time consuming you will be kicked.

 

If the game is focused, it's 15 minutes, yeah.

Simple solution. Dual monitors. Normally whip out the iPad Pro if I’m going to search for something while playing.

The game doesn't let me move the mouse away from the game window even on Windowed Borderless in my case so I still need to minimise, or use Windowed mode which is, well, ugly.

I have 2 comps, older with old Radeon card and this new with new Nvidia (nothing special) - and borderless works great on both for ALT+TAB and for using 'Win key' for popping-up taskbar... I dont have 2 minutes problem, and I can leave my character watching sec. camera screen forever - works great even while watching Youtube, and everything else. There must be a solution for you!

 

To be honest in whole of 2020 I had several extremely BAD periods with that Radeon and GTAO, Discord, alt+tabing, other apps, etc. - sometimes things would work, and other times not at all... (and special case with RDO's Vulcan driver and Discord that wont work at all with it)... I payed heavy price in frustration, so maybe now I'm on special treatment from PC gods

Security camera trick was patched out about a year ago now I think? The only viable methods that work are rubberbanding your controller or sitting in the exit screen of the LS Car Meet test track (which has the added bonus of building your Car Meet rep points as well).

Pro-Tip. If you choose to sit in the test track exit screen, put on some car meet clothes to get the bonus points for doing so.

I'm on PC and watching security camera on your sec. terminals (in NC, bunker, mc biz.,) works 100% - I tried yesterday to do long 'AFK on my 2nd acc. for bunker research, but that was still super-super-slow for me (even with occasional A14 mission ).

They changed/patched watching TV programs, and I dont know what's up when you are watching sec. camera on your home TV.

Using macro for the win.  

 

If i press FN+E, i activate an endless macro, that presses "E" every 30 seconds. Until i press FN+E again.

On console i always pause then keep the left analog stick down with something. Heard that if you stay in wardrobe it shouldn't kick you out, not sure tho, i still have to try it. However yes sometimes is boring, especially if you play in invite only... not much sense there...

Well... I haven't played the game until recently, so a decade year old thing is brand new to me.

 

However, I do usually play fullscreen, so if that's the issue, I'll take your suggestion.

Yeah, if you can get windowed borderless working it's better than full screen.

That works for a lot of PC games that support that.

Yep security cameras work but TVs don't... so you can AFK anywhere on the map with the Avenger. Not sure how long it'll last knowing Rockstar wanted to patch that.

IIRC, there is nowhere you can go in a contact mission that has a security camera. I don't think you can call an Avenger in contact missions. So there isn't a way to do the inexpensive supplies trick anymore.
