Car Recordings

 

Car Recordings are used in missions to make vehicles use predefined paths. These recordings ignore gravity and potential obstacles in the way.

All of the game's recordings are contained in the carrec.img file. The final game uses 287 of these recordings, while the carrec.img contains 426 recordings, meaning that there is a big amount of unused recordings.

Here I have documented and detailed all of SA's car recordings, both used and unused, using a simple script made by me to load these recordings ingame.

 

Big thanks to @Brooklynzsmac for getting me into documenting the recordings and spearheading through them with my tool before I retraced his steps to detail all findings.

carrec302.rrr - Just Business. Similar to 302. Drives through impound lot walls and instead of flipping at the end, it drives into the channel wall.
carrec303.rrr - Just Business. Early recording in flood channel starting at the same enterance, probably meant for the Packer. The recording ends with the car taking the channel exit across from Grove Street, where it weirdly crashes into the ground. Recording showcases how the enterance by the impound lot was way less steep.
carrec304.rrr - Just Business. Similar to 301 and 302. This time it continues past the point where 301 and 302 crash. This recording makes a full circle through the channel until it crashes into a wall. This one floats a little above the ground, maybe meant for Packer.
carrec305.rrr - Just Business. Similar to 304. Instead of a detour to take the enterance, it drops from the road into the channel. It also doesn't crash where 304 did, instead it continues until the the enterance across from Grove Street. It attempts to take that exit, but due to the speed it ramps off and crashes. Very obviously meant for a bike.
carrec306.rrr - Just Business. Still the same premise as the previous ones. When jumping into the channel, it spins out of control for a little while. After recovering, the vehicle takes the corner at very high speeds. Later on it spins out of control once again, but recovers. Finally it takes the same exit, but actually makes it. After taking the exit, it drives full speed into the bridge wall and rather violently falls into the void. Also meant for bike.

This simple tool I made allows you to view car recordings from the carrec.img ingame.

 

Change the value in the path.ini to the desired recording.

 

Type PATH ingame as a cheat to load that car recording.
Type STOP to stop the path.

 

The value can be changed in a single play session without restart.

 

Make sure that the path.ini is located inside a cleo folder, otherwise the value won't be read.
(Loading via modloader is possible, just make sure it's in a cleo folder)

Maybe this doesn't have much to do with it, but as a curious fact, in the internal files of the gta.pak of the Definitive Edition, there is a file called "GTASACarRecordingMods". This file "seems" to be a developer tool that was used to create car recording paths as its name says, anyway I don't know what the use of this file is.

carrec082 - Everything that needs to be loaded is commented out in the source "steal2". If I understood it right, it was a randomly generated car, however it does not make sense as the stance is clearly from a Lowrider. I think, it is possible to restore this sequence by re enabling the code.

carrec115 - The playback of this recording is commented out in the source "cat2" and the game never loaded it, unless they deleted some chunk of the code. Was meant for "catalina_pcj600" and "copcar2 (COPBIKE)". After robbing the bank, Catalina used PCJ600 at some point. Someone should look at this.

 

carrec240 - The mission "finaleC.sc" requests this carrec, but never uses it. Was meant for "bike4" and this bike is never created. There is no "bike5". Either they didn't have time to finish it or they simply forgot about it.

 

carrec254 - The mission "smoke4.sc" requests this carrec, but never uses it. Was meant for "reverse car car1" and this car is never created.

 

carrec347 - Is it really unused? Everything that needs to be loaded is loaded in the "crash3". Is meant for "forklift1_c3".

Thanks for this, seems like an amazing find (probably have been known to everyone for years, but only now became known and accessible to me).

 

I watched the recordings of the unused paths, quite interesting to see how the map was different during the development stage. R* definitely did a good job changing Bo'B area, the old map seems too high and exposed, the final one is low in relation to everything else and adds to the atmosphere of being alone and remote.
