Is the Trilogy Def. Edition worth $40 after the latest patch?

Just to clarify, I don't know when was the last patch for the Definitive Trilogy, but is it worth getting for $40 now? I'm on the fence whether I should get this or Forbidden West since the latter is not on sale.

I don't think so. The bugs are still there and they still can't get the atmosphere down. They have fixed a few things, but it didn't do much to improve the overall image.

Not really. I bought it last month and so far the only thing I think is better are some textures and the view of LS from the highway.

Yes and no. It is if you don’t already have the games. I bought it just so I can play on my Xbox. Some things  look great, others not so much, still some annoying bugs.

 

I have all of the original 3D era games on PS2 (including LC and VC stories ) but my ps2 broke years ago… friend of mine has a working ps2 I didn’t know he had and he said I can have it. I’ll give him a little cash for it though I can’t wait to play the stories games again

SA's atmosphere has been crippled entirely. It looks like trash most of the time, and suffers from all the bugs and downgrades the mobile "remaster" had. III looks like a toy city, way too clean, not gritty at all. Vice City seems to be the "best" version - hopefully I won't get hit by a lightning strike soon for using the word "best" here.

 

Personally, I wouldn't even pay 10 bucks for it. Buying beer is more worth for that money.

 

For 40$ you can fill up your fridge a bit for example, or buy a game which is actually good and made with passion. But stay away from that turd.

 

If you really, really want to play the DE, then I'd recommend you to buy a used copy, so GSG and R* won't see a penny for that.

I'm sorry for the lack of reply on my part. I read the older replies and just settled for Horizon: Forbidden West. As you may have noticed, I had quite the time. I've been playing it for almost two weeks.

 

The removed songs are still a big deal for me, and seeing as the gameplay still look dated, I had to give this one another hard pass at $40.

Honestly, for me it was definitely worth it. You are getting 3 full games (yes, they are old, yes they have some bugs, but still, 3 full games) with great achievement support. 3 and Vice City were by far the best imo and I honestly did not encounter many bugs. SA has a few bugs but nothing game breaking for me.

 

At the end of the day, the trilogy is "worth" what you are willing to pay for it.

It's worth the 40 imo and I expect further patches in the near future. Also on PC there's mods to fix the biggest issues.

I'm saving money for GOW Ragnarok, and I spent my $80 on Forbidden West. They removed many of the songs I liked which is a bummer for me.

It's on sale for $30 on PSN until Sept. 15. Might get it for my birthday.

I would say go for it if it includes the entire trilogy. There are a few neat features like autosaves in missions that are handy. You can do a string of missions back to back without worrying about dieing and reloading thanks to the auto save after each mission.

$10 for each game is more than worth it for me since I never got past Portland in GTA 3 and I was just 2/3 into the story for VC. Got another question, why is it that everytime I watch PS5 footage of GTA SA, all the videos show some kind of stutter? Is it still a thing?

While I agree with the 2nd statement. I don't think they're a masterpiece.

 

They were on sale a while back, but I ended up with TLOU Part 1 instead. New Game+ makes my replays more meaningful.

The ruined art style of the games in the trilogy makes me go back to the original versions immediately.

The desert should make you feel isolated, it should feel "hot". The OG PS2 version gave you that feeling with low draw distance, heat effects, and unique skyboxes and weather effects (yellow-ish sky in the desert during daytime/evening f.e.). And also the OG PC version still looks miles better, although it misses some PS2 effects.

 

Only one of 100000 examples why the DE is inferior to the OG versions (the daytime in above screenshots doesn't matter, because DE doesn't have ANY effects at all, no matter what time it is). No immersion, no atmosphere in the different biotopes of the map. Nothing.

 

No, I can't undertand how anybody could say the DE looks or feels better. Resolution etc. might be higher, some grass here and there, better looking trees, that's it. They stil removed vegetation like destructible trees and stones in the forest areas, and the destructible Joshua trees in the desert which were present in the OG versions have been removed as well - now there are some other Joushua trees which are indestructible, you can round up your car by driving against them.

 

And by the way, I think @The Artist 's post was sarcasm.

The easiest thing they could have done was put up a thick fog, something which modders have easily done through the timecyc hex editing. I hope it gets a huuuge update on its anniversary, then I might consider it.

the best versions by far of these games are the PC's original ones + DE Patches (but from what I read in the speculation thread of gta VI, DE Patches have been dmca'd)

 

DE Patches restores a bunch of features not included in PC ports when they were launched plus they fix bugs and problems that exist on these ports

These are low quality mobile games and should be priced accordingly (£5 each). Only an idiot would pay AAA prices for cut down, AI upscaled versions of 20 year old games. If they had rebuilt them from the ground up in unreal with professionally remade assets and relicensed the music, they'd be worth £20, £30 and £40 each for 3, VC and SA respectively.

 

Go get the originals as abandonware and mod them, you don't need a powerful PC to play them, and if you insist on playing on console, you can use the casting app on Xbox to connect to PC and it even passes through your Xbox controller as if it were plugged into your PC.

I'm still waiting for a proper price drop during the anniversary. Sure, most of the assets look much better than most mods out there, but they obviously cut corners. And I haven't heard of another major update since Dec. 2021.
