Michael Jackson's Black or White

In agreement with that post and in response to the recent Schreier article, which apparently has been edited while I wrote this(?);

Spoiler

I agree with this mindset. Unfortunately, mindsets operating under intersectionality or critical race theory, mindsets that have only dug deeper roots despite continual financial failure throughout creative industry over the last 8 years, were founded by openly disagreeing with the Luther King idea that skin colour should be irrelevant within a united society like the USA.

Now of course, a character like Tony Cipriani would never be able to be the protagonist to the opening of San Andreas. Demographics and culture will of course play a role in building the environment where the story takes place. GTA IV was brilliant for this. Niko wasn't American unlike every character from the 3D games prior. He fought in the Yugoslav Wars which provided some serious backstory implications, that none of the violence he witnesses or partakes in isn't on par with what he witnessed during that time. At one poitn he even admits to having seen 50 children, every one of them with their throats slit and hands cut off lined up against a church wall. The image of his youth is bombed out villages of Easern Europe, crater-laced fields which helps to emphasis the level of how foreign a place like Liberty City/New York City is to a man like himself - a late 2000's American mindset of a man like Niko would possibly be on par with the idea of Borat. So when a character like Mohammed (Roman's taxi driver) starts giving it; "don't think I'm not streetwise holmes, I've seen sh*t you wouldn't believe" - we know he could never imagine seeing those 50 children.

The rule when it comes to Rockstar is; believe nothing you hear until they show it. Disregarding that for a moment and judging what was written by Schreier;

A man woman duo styled after Bonnie & Clyde? I've been fond of that idea of that idea in the past, trim down the protagonist count from 3 that GTA V introduced, following the trio of main characters that GTA IV had, while also being able to keep the character switching during missions while possibly being able to keep the story much more focused on a single plotline? Go right ahead. Latin protagonist(s)? We've played as Americans, Brits, an Italian, a Chinese, an Eastern European, a Canadian, a Jew, a Dominican and an Avatar, this long-established erratic factor is nothing to celebrate or despise. Romance angle between two protagonists? I won't say no, because that's a new idea for GTA. And given the way GTA V can end as well as how RDR 1 & 2 end - can they write a story that makes players seriously think about the decisions they make throughout the game?

On the flipside, here are 3 things the cynical part of me is half-expecting due to the recent Schreier article, because the last decade has taught me; when you see industry insiders talk like that, these will be the results. These are precisely one side of the coin that Dan Houser was talking about when he said modern America was beyond satire;

- Making endless overt reminders of what race a protagonist is to every character they meet? Maybe if you want to give the impression they're an ethno-supremacist.

- Making endless overt reminders that one of the characters is a woman, rather than give her actual character? I prefer a character, not a walking talking shooting vagina.

- Not making jokes at the expense of "marginalised groups", despite every character from every walk of life being subject to that throughout the franchise history? If you want to know who rules over you...

There is always of course, the scenario that the people Schreier interviewed were lied to about the content of GTA VI from their superiors.

Then again, I've never actively followed games journalism unless it's knocking on my door.

TL;DR - I hope the writing and decisions that go into GTA VI are good. Not woke, not anti-woke (even though "not-woke" is considered "anti-woke" to the pro-woke mindset), just f*cking good, like Top Gun Maverick proved is what people want - entertaining escapism from the all bullsh*t and genuine hardship we endure on a daily basis.

It's good that they are trying to avoid causing offense,

wouldn't want the player to hear anything offensive when they are running over civilians with a car, spraying them with bullets as they run away and cutting the throats of Florida-grandmothers

V should be thrown away completely as a frame of reference here, imo. We're talking about a game that was made for a 15-year old technology, for Christ's sake!

But GTA 5 should be a reference regardless, which other company could fit a game this big into a PS3? I don't think its story is the best one for obvious reasons, but we gotta give credit where credit is due, also we're talking about a game close to hit the 200 million copies sold eventually, thinking Rockstar isn't taking inspiration from their most sold game ever by a country mile is just turning off your brain.

I personally believe the female protagonist leak, but not the unfinished map growing with updates one.

I don’t think it would be an unfinished map per se, they will just add more locations as time goes on like Cayo perico, but the full areas will be accessed in game with the huge session patent they have going on.

True. It doesn't give off a serious crime vibe. Looks casual, geeky and V-like.

It makes sense look how good they’re designing these new vehicles in the Online updates it’s clear it’s set in modern times

Gotta agree with this. I'm assuming a few of your guys are also fans of the TV show Narcos. That's a really good frame of reference for what the story could look like. Grounded, brutal and tense.

God knows they did it with GTAIV.

No, two years isn't as much as you think it is if there's alot that is going to change.

The directors must have clear ideas and know what they're going to do with their product,

changing it so often has potential to lead to development disasters and GTA VI not knowing what it wants to be.

Please GTA VI, be like that, please GTA VI, be like that!

Gosh how I wish it wasn't set in modern-day now that I know it will be influenced by Bonnie & Clyde ...

Genuine question to everyone;

Would you have a problem at all if GTA straight up left it's humour roots behind and went for a more serious world and tone, like RDR2?

Personally I'd be fine with it, RDR2 wet my appetite for serious R* story telling and I'd be down for more of it, and this is perhaps part of the reason why I'm not fussed about them potentially moving away from certain aspects of GTA's traditional humour.

I'm never against a franchise trying to evolve and move into new directions if the reasoning behind it is right, and I think there's good reasoning to be had for GTA going in that direction. An example of bad reasoning would be something like BF 2042's operator system, which was done purely under the desire for the studio/publisher to release/sell new operators, skins, voice lines, etc.

I loved RDR2 so I wouldn’t mind at all

I'd be perfectly fine with it too. Seeing what they did with RDR2 gives me confidence that they can create a great story that is more serious

Having a jetpack in a game is not necessarily a bad thing. GTA SA had it too and it was fun and didn't ruin the experience. Of course it was almost 20 years ago, but who gives a sh*t.

I finally got to read all the reactions.

Sign me up for whatever is coming.

I'm really glad to hear that Rockstar is no longer making their employees work as semi-slaves with crunch and other predatory development "tactics". If there's anything good out of the pandemic, it's that it allowed employers to see a different perspective when it comes to the mental health of their workers and how flexible work can be, especially the good old office job. Remote stuff and all, it all changed everything. I'm fine with waiting a little longer if it means I'm not paying to support someone's mental health decline.

About the protag: 🤷🏻. What difference does it make? Y'all never played a game with a woman before? Of course you did, Tomb Raider, with all of them close ups of Lara's voluptuous-ness and-anyway, that's not the point, a character is a character.

I don't care if the map isn't huge, if it's detailed and doesn't have useless mountains then that's already a lot better. I'm also glad to hear they are shifting GTA to a more serious tone. GTA V was too much of a pisstake that even the players suffer the consequences from it. Also, making fun of minorities was never fun, so it's good they are aware of this nowadays.

Also, that doesn't stop them from mocking everything else. They still nowadays mock extremes and stupidity in the world and are never going to stop, even with a serious story there's always room for a joke or a laugh. There's not much to worry about here tbh.

Of course it should, but not in terms of technological capabilities and potential of GTA VI. When we're talking about what GTA VI can or can not realize in terms of scale and detail, we ought to refer to RDR 2 first and foremost. The gap between V and VI is two generations, which makes any map, size or density comparisons or speculations invalid, imo. GTA VI will of course exceed all of them.

No, please, I need more of RDR2's story and characters and seriousness ... I NEED MORE of it from Rockstar.

The grounded, gritty and serious GTA games have always been my favorite like GTA IV and Vice City so I'm all for GTA VI to be an emotional rollercoaster that leaves me in tears and lets me go through all of human kinds' emotions by the end of the main story.

Give me a RDR2 inspired GTA VI and I assure you it will be a masterpiece of storytelling, characters and everything else in between!

I think you can have humour, certainly. But I also think we need to move past jokes about bodily functions and erections and stuff like that. Black comedy in crime dramas can and does work, but often it's the result of so many strange characters and how their personalities interact. So whilst I'm not against comedy entirely, I think they need to be smarter about it and - to be blunt - act like adults, instead of children drawing on a bathroom wall.

They are going to release the game halfway with things that will be added later (but that were supposed to be in the game at launch on day 1) at full price with paid DLCs, or do you believe that maps and stuff will be free? Missing the PS2 days when you had the full game ! and that the mobile gaming industry explodes, with its predatory practices (OFF-TOPIC)
