Honestly part of what makes Red Dead interesting and sets it apart from most Western media is that it's explicitly about the end of that era. Riding through Saint Denis as Arthur, and the gang sitting in a room with Italian mobsters, really drives home how anachronistic the cowboy outlaws in Red Dead are. People would be more likely to assume that Dutch's gang are a wandering rodeo act than actual outlaws at this point. This isn't a criticism, I think it's a very interesting approach and lends well to the game's themes, it's very much intentional.

I think setting a Red Dead game more in the past could take that deconstruction further. Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2 are about the end of an era, but because of the tropes it invokes, it doesn't really question whether that era actually existed, it's mostly a criticism of modernization. It's still quite romantic in its depiction of that setting, uncritically taking inspiration from American painters who embraced the concept of Manifest Destiny. I think actually setting it in that era, outside the perspective of Dutch's gang and maybe focus on characters for whom this era wasn't quite so rosy, could put the focus on deconstructing the myth of the Old West entirely.

1870s I want the Wild West during it's prime. No more it's the end of an era. Tired of that sh*t after two games.

You're really intelligent, what I like the most about RDR2 (the first game still had quite a lot of this) is the deconstruction of duel, we barely see two guys standing at each other for a fair duel in RDR2 because they actually were pretty rare (and dumb) in real life, people would mostly engage on a shootout normally by planning and taking cover, shooting in the back (Hickok's death) and such, not to mention that duels could result in both of them getting killed, so it's cool that they only happen for a fistful of times.

I'm with you, American Civil War (1860's), 1870's or 1880's at most.

LA Noire has this, although I can't recall if you're forced to skip the trip if you do this, barring any conversations scripted to occur.

There was a section in the leaked footage where a dev was testing Weapon Anim States using a DEFAULT_PLAYER_PED that did show very similar weapon aiming compared to Max Payne 3.

Also, the dev used a cheat to obtain an Assault Rifle and a Sniper Rifle, both of which came with a Concealable according to the cheat text, although nothing shown in the footage. So, there might be a mechanic where you gain wanted level if you open carry certain long arm weapons.

In a way R* did technically set us up to play as 1 of the Callander brothers if we stick with Dutch's gang and go farther back in time. We don't know much about them apart from being a fighter and extremely violent.

Apart from the wristbands, that same character appears in another clip where in the debug text it says something like PLAYER_STORY, so it's most definitely Jason. :kekw:

Are we expecting GTA VI to run at 60fps on current gen consoles at launch? :yee:

God saying "current-gen" feels so weird. It's tied to the PS3/X360 forever in my mind...

So you're saying VI's preproduction started a few months before V's release and that VII's preproduction is a few months underway..

Can I wait a couple of days for the camping gear to ship or is it better if we already start the queues for the imminent release? 👀

I wouldn't be surprised if they would want to rest the franchise after they release next GTA and all planned content for it. Hell, they may even want to go all in with Project Medieval rather than work on next Red Dead game.

I know. Comments were saying about it, but does it really matter though? Something like this would be funny as hell as a GTA random event.

Maybe, they will reconsider releasing Bully 2 after VI. It has been shelved, but it went thru 2 years of active development. And possibly the Medieval project.

Cheers tez my name is in articles on Google 🤣🤣

Why always a need for deconstruction? Everything we've been doing for the last 60 years is deconstrcuting, denying and doubting what we do now and what we used to do. Moreover, that's what Western as a genre has been doing with itself for the last 50 years, Rockstar offers nothing new in that sense. Why not create a western not for the sake of any analysis or commentary, but just for the sake of creating some good-quality historical fiction. At this point, though, RDR seems so much like Dan Houser's passion project that it's quite doubtful whether someone else in the company would want to dig as deep into the project.

Who the hell wants Medieval game from Rockstar? It sounds very boring. Rdr 3 will be next game, maybe some remasters, or smaller scale project

I'm not so sure about that.

And even just looking at it commercially, Rockstar wouldn't cease to work on the sequel to their second best selling game and franchise unless they started making GTAs back-to-back.

Imagine if after GTA VI releases, Rockstar released a compilation with GTA IV, GTA V and GTA VI in it.

Yeah, I don't doubt it all. It's whether or not someone would be willing to pay as much attention to the contents of the game and particularly the story that I question. The possible existense of the game is out of the question. They probably go through ideas already.

I'm just going to say it: Red Dead doesn't have to strictly be a Western franchise.

It's interesting you say this because for me RDR2 didn't even feel like a western - not in the same way RDR1 did anyway. I felt it veered away from the western theme a bit - just because something is set in the 1800's doesn't make it a western.
