Procedural generation in terms of map creation is also used by... pretty much everyone, including R* I believe, but the level of which it's used differs. Some games use it extensively (like NMS) and others use it to build basic maps which they can mould to their liking. A common use for it is for things like foliage, so the placement of plants, shrubs, etc.

Mhmm. R* have used WorldMachine (not sure if that's AI but it is procedural) for a number of years, difference being that after they insert that model into the game, they change it manually to their liking and hand-sculpt at will.

Grove Street Games managed to take a very advanced technology and make it look like it was from the 80s

Tbh they were given a hard hand. They absolutely bungled that hand and then doubled down and made it worse for themselves, absolutely, but they were given ancient games that, as much as I love them, have aged poorly visually and mechanically.

They needed a remake but that's too expensive and time consuming and would have to be done one at a time, where as T2 probably wanted a package deal with all three as a quick cash cow inbetween R* projects.

GSG deserve criticism but the real people at fault for the mess of DE was T2. I can't imagine many (if any) at R* wanted them to be handled like that (and given that R* seemingly have taken DE far away from GSG, that rings true) where as T2 have talked about wanting more projects out of R* and DE (and E&E) are the result of that.

I still can't believe of all the names they could have chosen they went for Grove Street Games... I still think they wanted to be part of Rockstar but they rejected them and so GSG went for the closest possible name

If Rockstar acquired them I’d guess they’d rename them to Rockstar South :kekw: what if the trilogy was a test if it was successful Rockstar would have bought them but because it wasn’t they rejected them lol.

I can see a proper map expansion happening this time around > only it will be an expansion for GTAO and for SP it will just add a piece of land with a few stranger missions maybe. R* are definitely building VI(online) with longevity in mind and map expansions will ultimately be a part of that in my opinion.

this needs to be a team death match level for GTA VI Online.

(edit)

 what about.

“The studio formally known as Groove Street Games”

This has probably been mentioned loads of times in this thread but there's nearly 800 pages.

Is there any possiblity we could be seeing a map/city expansion as a DLC in SP? AFAIK it's just some parts of Florida right now?

Afterall this project is named "Americas" and there was a leak mentioning there would be a place in South America.

We haven’t even gotten a proper reveal for the actual game yet and some are already talking about post launch support lol but to answer your question , I’m gonna say no

Zero?

The name of the street the studio is on is Grove Street.

Now unless they moved to that street cause it'd be funny to call them selves Grove Street Games cause of GTA, which probably not likely given a studio of their size can't be too picky, it probably did have little to nothing to do with R*/GTA.

I'm sure there was a quote that came out when RDR2 was released. Something along the lines that 'every tree and bush' was manually placed when they created the world.

Thought that was quite staggering... I'd hope - at least for the sanity of the developers - that there is some element of AI in building the map... but R* know their reputation - and they would only be shooting themselves in the face if they went the lazy route and automated so much of what they are known for.

IMO

That's something i read a while back, too. And that they did some type of irl scanning of the trees.

Photogrammetry, most likely.

Pretty common these days.

Using something like WorldMachine doesn't nullify that though. Devs can use WM to get a basic shape for a given area, then still sculpt it manually and place everything in that terrain manually.

Have done it (been part of a team, more like) IRL professionally, it's pretty impressive tech but depending on the hardware used it can require a ton of post-processing to the resulting model. Still better than making it from scratch though.

I'm very curious about the creative process behind mapmaking of GTA/RDR and what the very early stages of pre-alpha development look like.

Eg. how many people decide on the road layout, town size/location and how do they reach a concensus to build a certain area the way that it ends up for us.

Interesting for sure... I also play Cities: Skylines - and always imagined that R* would use something similar to start to build their worlds... before going in at a macro level to refine landscapes, architecture etc.

Explaination to my October 5th reveal of the next GTA entry:

inthesun_10_2.jpg

I don't think much of it, but when we got leaks of GTA VI, which confirmed that it's gonna be set in vice city, I remembered this promotion from rockstar about the diamond casino opening or something from way back. Word service is devided as if they couldnt just lower font and have as a one word, clearly someone from devs of GTA online wanted to maybe tease or just a simple "meh i dont wanna lower font". On the other side you see a room nuber, which is 510, 10th month, 5th day? Idk just sharing.

Huh I didn't know about that, it sounds really cool and explains why their worlds feel so real.

In my mind, the ideal new location would be Hawaii. A perfect mix between Los Santos and Vice City.

Agreed!  Hawaii has a lot to offer as far as geography, landscape and culture.  You have urban city/skyscrapers, mountains, country rural land, rainforests, beaches, etc.. there’s something for everybody.  Hawaii is a great location for just about anything!

Also, Hawaii has the worst drivers I’ve ever seen.. way worse than Florida so.. yeah.

Yup, it has some pretty crazy simulation of things like erosion and so on. It's a very good starting point.

Although I am of the opinion that game devs like R* should probably restrict replies more often because "gamers", I can't imagine they'll go too long with replies restricted. I have a feeling an announcement is imminent within the next few weeks. Hopefully.

For the record, trees are not scanned as a whole, just the trunk. Scanning branches is impossible

Not only that but the generated terrain would make the mappers to having to make roads according to the terrain and not the other way around which is why San Andreas feels realistic in terms of road system... really cool
