How so? Retrospectively, I just chalked it up to "countryside & city" or RDR+GTA IV. Which is what GTA V was.

Rockstar usually likes to push consoles to their limits which was seen with GTAV and RDR2. GTA V released right at the end of the XBOX360/PS3 generaiton, while RDR2 leaned towards the end of the PS4,XB1 gen (2018). We've seen usually late-gen games push the consoles to their limits. So, with GTA6, Rockstar will want to push the limits of the PS5/XBX/S. With this logic, we won't see GTA 6 in 2024 or maybe even 2025 either. Depending on how long this gen lasts (usually a gen is 7-8 years); however, with the chip shortage, it can be safe to assume that the console gen may last an extra year longer so about 8 or 9. So.. No GTA 6 until at least late 2025 or 2026..??

Rockstar doesn't really follow such patterns. They released GTAIV and RDR1 just 3-4 years into that generation. RDR2 was supposed to come out in 2017, exactly 4 years into the last generation, which, admittedly, did get delayed. If VI hits that late 2024 window, it'll be perfectly in-line with that 4 year mark.

 

What's more likely to happen is Rockstar's next game after VI (considering it comes out in 2024) coming out at the tail end of the generation (~2029) as a kind of cross-gen title with the next generation of consoles, like V did in 2013.

As for RDR2 getting "delayed" I personally argue that this was a marketing ploy, and they knew it was going to be Fall 2018 since the start. The game released towards the tail end of the gen even with all the alleged crunch culture and the last minute development changes the execs wanted. However, despite all this, I'm sure Rockstar still wants to exceed the player's expectations which will take time due to how complex game development has become with more powerful hardware such as the Ps5/XBSX/S. It's quite possible Rockstar may want to take development longer than RDR2, and thus "breaking" another pattern.

I really hope Rockstar brings back the music-themed “mission passed” sound effect, rather than just a dull sound like in GTA5. Vice City had the best sound with TBoGT a close second IMO

they actually had that planned for V but it got scrapped before release. One can still find the sound files when digging deep.

Each of the three had their own melody when passing a mission (i think there were even different melodies for when a mission ends in a sad way or with an open ending but I might be mixing that up with the IV episodes)

Pushing a console to its limits is not really anything to do with the console lifecycle. If they want to push the new consoles to their absolute peak right now, they can. There is nothing stopping them. PS5 dev kits have been in circulation from 2018.

 

If you want to play with the idea of the game not coming out for that long, a better argument would have been because they’re waiting for more console sales. As it stands right now there probably hasn’t been enough sales to justify them releasing a new GTA to next gen only.

 

There’s like 35 million next gen consoles in circulation right now. Rockstar did those numbers with V in 11 months. And that’s assuming everyone buys the game which they wont. They only achieved those numbers with over 100m active PS3 and Xbox 360’s in circulation. There is simply not enough next gen consoles out there now to meet sales performance they will rightly expect.

 

I absolutely do not want the game to be last gen too, it’s prohibiting. But I see it as an inevitably unless Sony and Xbox can at least double their sales by fall 2024 which is when everyone is guesstimating the game will drop. This is what will prohibit the advancements and not fully realise next gen power, if they have to account for last gen ports too.
