And covid was probably a catalyst for this. What kind of extra security protocols would they have to stop leaks from happening?

Anybody who leaks anything is easily traced and would be fired immediately and blacklisted from ever working in the game industry again. They aren't going to leak something for internet points with that in mind. On top of that, everyone is probably on an NDA, which means it's not just career lost, you will probably get sued for a lot of money.

In big studio environments phones and flash disks at desks are not permitted and your desktop is monitored. USB ports on machines probably aren't even active. Anyone who even tries to take a picture of something would likely get caught immediately. Employee's are only given access for what they need to see and work on. A lot of employee's probably have no idea about the bigger picture. There is probably not access to the internet on any machine except for those in a senior position. Employee logins probably use a timer system with unique codes that need to be changed and re entered on a regular basis.

Physical searches upon entering and leaving work is probably a thing.

All that said, they are not immune from leaks. The map for RDR2 got out remember. However, even that I think was leaked by Rockstar themselves. I just don't see how that could have got out.

But yeah, again, Rockstar make the best games in the industry. If you have devoted your life to making games, that is the pinnacle. Nobody is going to throw that away for a kekw. So in short, it would be very difficult to leak anything without getting caught red handed, and even if you managed it, you'd get found out straight away and your life would be over.

But how does that go when they work from home though?

I doubt they don't have access to the Internet, how would anyone want to work there if that was the case? As you mentioned, I think the most effective mechanism is the fact that the vast majority aren't so stupid that they would risk their whole career for Internet points.

I don't think I've ever been less interested in gaming than this year.

How come that every goddamn game is some kind of science-fiction/robot/cyborg/post-apocalyptic/fantasy bullsh*t? I'm so sick of it. Maybe I should be more open to those games but I just don't enjoy stuff like that. I like realistic games, set in our world. It's really pissing me off :cringekek:

Like how is "Everywhere" supposed to be a rival when it's the same sh*t as every other game?

GTA VI is the only game I am looking forward to at the moment.

I don't know. Working at home creates a loophole in that they cannot control what people have in their possession. But even still, if someone took a photo on their phone whilst at home, they'd easily be able to identify who did it purely based on what it is and the probabability of their screen having identification on in some form. But everything else stays in tact because they are working via a remote connection to their office station. Not using their own machine with local files.

Why would they need the internet? At home sure to connect to the office, but not whilst in the office. We know from Jason that most of them are back in the office now.

The year is 2068.  You have successfully managed to waste your entire life waiting for a sequel of your well-beloved video game franchise: Grand Theft Auto Six.  This harsh realization slowly kicks in as you wake up in your rented tiny shack of an apartment with closed off windows.  You get up from the stained mattress you called your home, proceed to the fridge and get yourself a 'morning' Pisswasser at 7 P.M as you turn on CNT to consume the latest government-approved news.  You pop the beer, sip it slowly as you wallow on your mattress on what went wrong in your life.  Your friends and family have long abandoned you - you don't even remember their faces anymore - or how a human face even looks like for that matter.  You drop the beer and get up, still wearing your dirty white tank top and boxers, and proceed to rent yourself more Rockstar Edinburgh Whiskey from your iFruit STX 9.  A flying Cliffford nano drone delivers it by the door, you attempt to pay with your Shark Card - but unfortunately the transaction failed!  You need that bottle, so you don't even think twice about grabbing that bat and smashing the drone.  The IAA may be informed about your actions, you know that such a crime would be punished with execution.  As the knowledge creeps into your mind, you sit by the termite infested chair, proceed to turn on the light - the light you haven't seen in half a century.  You pop the whiskey open, slowly pour it as you patiently wait for your arrest.  The voices are back.  You hear the six.  You hear the six, six, six, six in your mind.  What does the six mean?  Has the announcement finally happened?  Or is it perhaps yet another psychological fluke that you've been a victim of since forever.  But one thing is for certain, you will never see the Six in your life.

Looking at player feedback (live ops teams, community teams, art teams, design teams, so on so forth), programmers looking at StackOverflow and other websites, documentation for things like C++, C# and other programming languages and graphics API's blah blah that are all on the... Internet. Among many other things.

They have access to the Internet, it's just that no one is stupid enough to do stupid things on company network because they can be traced instantly.

Pre-written articles are a real thing, for breaking news, like important peoples death, such as the Queen or the President, etc. Having an "Announcement" post template pre-written to be copy/pasted and filled in would be wise.

At the same time, Rockstar teasers are so simple (but effective!) that they might as well come up with it on the spot. The file name for the GTA V logo that replaced the whole R* website in 2011 was literally Untitled-01.jpg :kekw:

I think it's got better though since the Kotaku article and RDR2 working hours thing. As Jason said in the Kotaku 18 month article.

Quote

Some of those previous policies have been revoked, to the point where one employee said the “company culture has become more fun.” Testers are now allowed to use phones at their desks.

Ultimately though I don't know. I don't work there. Just making estimations based on working environments I have been in over the years whilst working on sensitive things that involve NDA's. Everyone will have roles and different privileges whilst working. Bottom line is as Spider said, nobody would ever be stupid enough to leak anything significant, even if they had all the freedom in the world to do so.

Fun fact, the GTA V logo was inspired by an artist who dropped a five dollar bill on his copy of GTA IV. And they just thought "f*ck it, that's cool and good enough!"

Yeah, it's a good idea indeed, and perhaps any change from GTA V's Robocop-style LSPD would be much preferred after all these years.

Just don't go back to the scrubs they call police in GTAIV and we are good 😂

That's a bit odd question to ask in 2022, isn't it? Developers use Internet pretty much all the time when troubleshooting or just looking through documentation. And even if they didn't need it, I certainly wouldn't want to work at a company which doesn't allow you to have Internet connection.

Another issue is console devkits, I believe those can be accessed remotely but obviously it's just like streaming and those with bad internet connections, especially in the UK, might struggle. Some companies allow devkits to be brought home but I assume this is kind of frowned upon in the big AAA ones.

Only frowned upon when its early in the lifespan of the console (like, now) and early in the development cycle of the game.   A family member of mine is a developer for a big AAA company and I geeked out when I saw a devkit for Xbox One at his house. But this was in in 2018---four years after the god damn console came out.
