EDIT: Ok, people's theory is that it was because of Zelnick saying some business sh*t ("a glitch"). I don't buy that and it makes no sense to me.

Nah it wasn't just that, I remember there being some bad stuff I can't remember exactly what it was.

The Definitive Edition wasn't doing good, the RDO playerbase wasn't happy, questions about E&E were rising as well.

It definitely felt like an attempt to lighten up the overall mood with the community.

Yeah but those were community sentiments, it wasn't after an official bad PR article that they revealed VI was in development for the first time. I don't quite fully buy that, especially because of the industry-wide trend I mentioned earlier, and Rockstar opening a metric sh*t ton of job positions suddenly over the past few months.

Correct. "Mod"s are global moderators that help out with the entire forum, "Staff" are usually area mods and it will be specified above the logo - GTA Series, Off-Topic, etc...

The irony is that it wasn’t sentimental like most game companies would give their communities it was more like “stop your b*tching and complaining we’re working on something brand new that you can buy from us” lol

Both sci-fi and fantasy are very vague terms and games within that genre can essentially be anything. You can create vastly different experiences within those genres, while realistic open-world crime games are in this aspect limited, in a way. Any open-world urban crime game is bound to be very similar to GTA, so naturally developers look into ways how they can differentiate from that concept. And it's not nearly as easy to come up with something truly different in that genre, as opposed to sci-fi/fantasy RPG. That's not to say that there aren't obvious clones within fantasy/sci-fi. There are, but you can easily come up with something that makes your game different.

I think Watch Dogs as a concept was decent enough for an open-world urban crime game, and it's honestly a pity that it's likely not going to be explored further in foreseeable future. I think there was a lot of potential to make the series stand out, both in terms of story and most importantly gameplay. WD2 is a good proof of that.

A good idea for developers would be to explore past settings or settings outside USA, if they want to create a game in this genre. It's something Rockstar is seemingly unwilling to do, and there is a lot of potential for interesting stories and/or gameplay mechanics.

Yes, sci-fi and fantasy are vague, but look at most skyrim-esque games. They have the same sort of sh*t. Everyone hates elves, dwarves are good at the anvil, dragons are so rare to be thought to be extinct, the human races are mostly nordlings which are basically just Scandinavian dudes looking like Chris Hemsworth or Triple H back when he had long hair.

More than that, and maybe this is because of my limited experience in this field, but looking at a lot of trailers and announcements and gameplay, a lot of the games in these genres look the exact same, with a few exceptions. I could genuinely not tell most of these games apart on first glance and I'm sure @DarkDayz will agree with me. The dark environments and all of that add to it. I feel like that will be looked back upon as the "orange tint/hue" of this generation. Remember how a lot of games from 15-20 years ago all had that orange tint to them?

Besides, there are tons of things to explore in open world crime. The location, like you said can change. The era, the setting, the main type of crime, the stories to tell are endless. There's not really been a drug centered game in GTA, there are virtually no crime games set in Italy, South and South East Asia, South America, even Africa. Even a fantasy game based on African, South American or Asian folklore and myths would be a breath of fresh air instead of the same European folklore explored in all the games mentioned above. I realize this will feel very different due to the map being very different, and the lack of easy access to guns, but still.

It's really not that simple. You can make something that looks and feels exactly like SA in 2022, but would people actually be happy with that? Once you start factoring in the fidelity, scale, and level of detail that people expect from modern AAA titles, it quickly balloons out of proportion. IV took over 100m dollars to make, but that was almost 14-15 years ago. A game like that would certainly cost over 150m dollars to make now, if not more.

If San Andreas was a current gen title, it'd take a gargantuan amount of resources to make, and if the leaks are to be believed, even Rockstar scaled back from the initial 3 cities ideas for VI, and the same person who leaked that info also said that the game is still as big as their previous titles.

I know all of that, what I meant was not a modern GTA equivalent title. I meant something with modern graphics, that can compete with GTAIV for worldbuilding and depth and detail. Cause one of the most expensive parts of open world game development is the depth and level of detail. Not the high res textures, not the story, none of that, but the depth and worldbuilding. And if GTAIV cost a 100 mill, and The Witcher 3 (one of the best games I have ever played) cost 80 mill, it doesn't seem that outlandish, no? My point is an open world game with level of detail and depth similar to older GTA titles can be made by other companies, especially considering they spend a similar amount on linear games nowadays, like Tomb Raider and BF4 and so on. They even spent close to a 100 mill on that deadpool game from 2013. I honestly wouldn't complain if a GTAIV equivalent (in terms of the open world) came out today, that game still holds up in every way except for the graphics.

I just feel like companies don't bother because it is a lot of time, and a lot more effort and restrictions to create a realistic open world (compared to the creating a world of your own) for it all to ultimately be called "wish dot com GTA" or GTA clone or whatever. Because it is clear that they can't compete with modern R* titles in terms of depth, budget, or scope. I'm yet to see a game that can go toe to toe with GTAV. All the Watch Dogs games failed, Saints Row games that came around that time or after all failed, the Far Cry titles that came afterwards also failed in that. Cyberpunk failed. So on. Some of them failed specifically because they tried to be GTAV/GTAO competitors. So why not aim for GTAIV level depth or quality, at least on a somewhat surface level mixed with at least 8th gen graphics and do their own thing in an open world modern day crime game. Doesn't even have to be an established AAA studio. Instead they try to go above and beyond and fail at even what GTAIII did (look at Cyberpunk at launch compared to GTAIII) while spending more money than R* did.

I doubt that's happening, Rockstar themselves have mocked the sh*t out of NFT's in the last couple GTA Online DLC's as well. If anything Zelnick's going to use Zynga who already has an NFT division (and it makes more sense for this sort of monetisation to exist on mobile games - although it shouldn't exist at all...) or the 2K sports games which already sorta have something like NFT's I believe.

I'm wondering if Rockstar will finally introduce K9 police units in VI, especially since the bounty hunters in RDR2 would sometimes spawn with tracking dogs to track you down if your bounty was high enough. It might give credence to the phenomena of the police AI being able to seemingly know where the player is at all times since I know that's something that quite a few players gripe about

EDIT: plus it would make foot pursuits more tense

GTA cops are that good at sniffing the player out they don't need any K9 police units. :jkek:

They wouldn’t have mentioned it at all if an announcement wasn’t happening sooner rather than later regardless of the conspiracy theories 🤷🏾‍♂️

I just figured it would make for some cooler immersion. I can't remember if the police AI in RDR2 was as "all-knowing" as the LSPD is in GTA5

Yeah, it's a good idea indeed, and perhaps any change from GTA V's Robocop-style LSPD would be much preferred after all these years.

I keep seeing tweets from R* employees that they're now coming back to the office, and even some of them not full time. Surely this could've limited work productivity rate? Just a thought, especially if we're factoring in how much a delay there might be on VI. I guess it kind of fits in with the leak report stating moral was higher than ever - I mean I'd be happier working from home than at an office...

This has been happening for a while, think they're currently hybrid. Which IMO is the future, along with the choice for remote working, 2K already does it.

The attack dogs in TLOU2 were a nice addition, though in the context of roaming gangs.

I'd welcome a K9 unit in VI, though maybe I could bribe them with some realistic steak :realisticsteak:

And covid was probably a catalyst for this. What kind of extra security protocols would they have to stop leaks from happening?

lol that's what I'm saying

it kinda makes sense in the context of a Bonnie & Clyde-styled duo doing some Narcos-type sh*t. Like, it'd be pretty interesting having to deal with drug-sniffing K9 units when doing some drug smuggling as well. Gives the player another obstacle to overcome and it makes things more tense

A lot of the stuff already existed in corporate environments, VPN's, installation of security software, or accessing remote machines instead of being able to do work on your own computers physically (so you can't save files), stuff like that. No way to avoid a significant other or housemate from seeing something you're working on unless you lock yourself in a room I guess, but even before covid people could still talk to each other about stuff so... and as far as I know most people want to keep their job so I don't think it'll be a huge issue.

Another issue is console devkits, I believe those can be accessed remotely but obviously it's just like streaming and those with bad internet connections, especially in the UK, might struggle. Some companies allow devkits to be brought home but I assume this is kind of frowned upon in the big AAA ones.

No one wants to leak anything to tbh. I worked on Super Nintendo World(theme park) years before it was announced and when I told my roommates no music started playing or no bitches came out dancing.
