A lot of what the series is about today in terms of humour came in with the 3D era, the Houser's, etc.

I'm sure they could do a good take on the UK, that's not the question, it's whether it would still feel like a GTA game and world, which is unlikely.

I think if there's still a Houser working on the game, it easily could. Despite Dan's departure I'm sure Sam is still in touch with his brother about the projects he works on. He could still be easily giving Sam inspiration and his input on everything, including GTA 6. So I have no doubt it still would if it ever goes that direction.

The UK isn't as crime-free as you'd think it is, and guns aren't as rare either.

I think it would feel "like" it. But for lack of a better way to describe it, I feel it would feel like GTA in the same way that RDR feels like GTA. Akin to GTA but with a different flavour. I think the main issue is that the UK would just feel VERY different from a US set GTA game. Which I wouldn't be a fan of, at all.

I'm honestly open for foreign settings. America can get boring after decades. I found Cayo Perico to be extremely refreshing for that reason alone.

With GTA 6 being rumored to have map expansions, a UK city being included is very likely to happen alongside South America.

The UK as a setting is difficult for me. I am English, so on the one hand I would love to see a place like London included. But on the other...this place is f*cking depressing. America, for all its faults, is forward looking and bright and glitzy. England...not so much. It's grey, it's tacky, our entire media is obsessed with the 1950s for some reason and the entire country has this small village mentality where there's suspicion of anything modern and just a general joylessness. The big characters you love from GTA? You'd never get that here, because our whole culture puts on this facade of not giving a sh*t about anything and showing no enthusiasm for anything.

It's just a miserable place, and you'd have to really try to try and make it appealing when the landscape is boring, the people have no personality and society has barely progressed past World War 2. It's my home and I love it, but modern England would be a terrible choice for a setting. Though I can't speak for any of the other nations in the UK.

Crime isn't the issue, GTA is heavily built on US culture which has ultimately defined many of it's gameplay features.

Ammunation for example, the ability to go buy guns, explosives and whatnot off the shelf isn't just a game mechanic, the in-game lore behind it is steeped in US gun culture. We don't have that in the UK, we're a country where the vast majority of the population doesn't want guns. As for how rare they are, they seem to be a lot rarer than you think they are. Air rifles aren't that rare but actual firearms? Rare amongst the civilian population - our guns owned per 100 people is 4.6, which is largely as high as it is due to people like farmers and hunters. The US's guns owned per 100 is 500.60. You know how you can start fights with civs in GTA and they sometimes pull out guns and it turns to chaos? That wouldn't happen in a GTA UK.

The "American dream" is also something that is a core part of GTA, but we don't have that in the UK. We're a deeply cynical country, we don't have that traditional American optimism, or the patriotism. We don't put our politicians on pedestals and almost worship them, we put their faces on dartboards or at the top of bonfires.

Britain would make a fantastic location for an open world urban crime game... but it wouldn't make a very good Grand Theft Auto.

Set a GTA game anywhere but the US and you can say goodbye to the old Ammunition

South America is the most natural outside US location (you can still have commentary about US (CIA coups etc.)) and multiple cities is prob the best way to ease into outside locations

but if they don't go outside US, the cities at least should be very different from each other to add variety, Orlando and Tampa are too similar to Miami

Franchises can evolve and change. I feel like a cynical GTA game (in the same vein as GTA 4) with less emphasis on guns would be really interesting to see. Avoiding the police and avoiding openly carrying could be a major part of a game like that, which could be fun.

Gotta agree with you on the clothing front especially here.
I am not a fan of the games have a million different customisation options - not just because it lacks focus, but because it ruins the creative integrity of the character. All the costumes Tommy gets in VC make sense for him, as something he'd wear either in a mission or as something you'd believe a classy guy like him would be seen in. Would his character work so well if people could give him a green mohawk and have him prance around dressed as a nurse? And all just to get a cheap laugh out of people.

I just don't get it, and I don't get stuff like letting players choose hairstyles or forcing them to eat or God knows what else. I didn't like it in San Andreas and I don't much like it now, and I think the simpler approach is the better bet.

I'd probably prefer if it was just a bit toned down, can choose how you dress, but only with things that would make sense for the character, maybe a bit like the way SA did it, locking certain places behind points in the story

Maybe showing outfits to buy with separate pieces like how GTAO does

I can see why giving the most freedom would be viewed at the best option for them though, because if you want to play like that, play like that. Nobody is forcing you to dress all wacky and out of character, and for those people who do want to, they have the choice

Both GTA and RDR (even L.A. Noire) are quintessentially American games. The entire backbone of those games is built upon American history, culture, politics, media, and so on, both narratively and mechanically.

South America could work as a secondary location in GTA for sure. US, for better or worse, had a lot of direct influence over that continent for decades.

Rockstar's other dormant IPs would work better for international settings. A small town in UK would make a killer setting for a new Bully reboot/sequel. Midnight Club could take place in dozens of places anywhere in the world, same as Manhunt. Agent possibly would've been a globetrotting adventure.

I'd have loved to see We are the Mods coming to fruition, but alas! A 1960s England setting is something you don't really get in video games.

And at the end of the day, they can always create a new IP suited for a non-US setting. A new Rockstar IP would create a ton of buzz anyway.

I mean there's a reason why in my opinion Arthur Morgan looks the best in his pre-set outfits, that being the Gunslinger outfit, the Summer Gunslinger outfit and the Winter Gunslinger Outfit (although I hate that you cannot close the jacket here after chapter 1!!!, at least on PC I have it fixed now with a mod :)). I never use any other outfit in RDR2 except for when a story mission forces me to but even then it is a pre-set outfit made by Rockstar and one that makes sense but the idea of having thousands of different clothing options to choose from and mix at will is not doing it for me and destroys the characters' personality Rockstar envisioned.

Oh and Arthur's hat ... oh boy, this hat is so iconic and has Arthur's personality in it, I really dunno how Rockstar did it but Arthur is only Arthur to me if he wears this hat. God dammit is it great!

I'm with you on the idea of a Manhunt reboot working in the UK. The original game was heavy on themes of neglect and urban degradation, which would absolutely gel with urban English life. A few tweaks, and I could see that working in a way an English GTA probably couldn't, because they could lean in to how depressing the whole thing is - rather than transplanting American cultural concepts to an alien setting.

  • It’s an ambitious project but with a scaled-down scope for launch. That tracks with information shared by a source with Axios Gaming who said an earlier plan had called for four protagonists and three cities.

Was this map proven to be fake? Anyway, I really like the idea of expanding the map over time - it's a win-win situation. The developers having less "deadline stress" while at the same time refreshing the game for the players. Similar to what they did with Cayo Perico map. Also, regarding the whole "Bonnie and Clyde" thing, the two got famous for running from the law, so, if the game follows the same path, multiple cities make more sense. Imagine being on the run and "starting over" in a new city. It would be cool if the players have to hide from the law in cheap motels and move more low key then what we are used to in previous GTA games.

Cuba would be great for all these out of place old vehicles Rockstar added to Grand Theft Auto: Online.

What makes you think it wouldn’t feel like “GTA”? That’s a weird stance

As we are getting more info on the production pace, I'm less confident that R* is gonna release a trailer this year. R* probably don't wanna repeat the info drought from GTA V era. So knowing that the game is most likely 2-3 years away, next year is my best guess for their initial marketing rollout.

For me a Grand Theft Auto game set outside the United States of America is just another game. I play these games to experience everything American.

...I explained in another post m8.

tl;dr; the US and UK speak the same language but out cultures are very different, and GTA is heavily designed from a world, lore and gameplay perspective around the US. GTA UK would play very differently and as a result it would not feel like GTA.

If set in VC, I hope they come up with a name for their fictional Florida and that the map is more than just Miami proper. If they include the keys and glades, maybe Fort Lauderdale and some smaller islands it could be pretty cool. If RDR2 is anything to go by map wise, I'm betting where ever it's set will be fairly massive.
